Certificate of Excellence
The Weary Ploughman was extensively refurbished to a very high standard over the last few years. Every room has been tasefully decorated and the ensuite bathrooms have been renewed, or in the case of room 3 - a shower room. All the furnishings are of a good quality and the beds renewed in July 2012. Each room has a 26" Sony flat-sceen Freeview television, hair-dryer and a large ceiling fan, as well as tea and coffee making facilities. All bedrooms are on the first floor and we do not have a lift.

Lovely lunch. Waiter/waitress service. Good menu and Christmas menu. My dad really enjoyed the trio of sausages although the chips were more like wedges. Local ale which was good to see. No pressure to tip or add service charge to the bill. Lovely lovely lovely.

We are a family of 3 with our 11 year old son, stayed here for one night when visiting family.
The bar is amazingly well stocked and it was lovely to enjoy a drink in the lounge bar while we all played cards before heading upstairs to our room. Attentive staff, comfy and well eq

Visited with family. My partner and I chose starters as a main as we weren't hugely hungry. Instead of adding an amount, we were simply charged double for each dish, which made it more expensive than some main courses.

Lacks atmosphere and the management aren't exactly warm and

Dear Mrs Lovell, Frankly this is getting somewhat tiresome, particularly as we have already dealt with this issue via your Facebook complaint! So you are no doubt aware of our position, but for the benefit of anyone else reading this we had better go through it all again. Regarding the issue of your starter and your desire for a light snack; We offer a large range of light snacks and nibbles all appropriately priced. We also offer small portions of quite a number of our main meals at a reduced price. If you aren’t at all hungry you are welcome to have a starter as your main which we will serve alongside any other mains and you won’t be charged anything other than the advertised starter price – no premium, no “adding an amount”!!! Occasionally we have someone who particularly likes the sound of one of the starters and asks could they have it as a main sized portion and in that case, we charge them for 2 starter portions - though normally we put more than 2 starter portions on the plate. But when this happens every couple of months we are always meticulous to check that that is what they want. We table check pretty much every table which is an opportunity to discuss anything, likewise we check everyone is happy with the bill and food at point of payment. Thus the only reason that double amounts for a starter would appear on your bill is that someone had explicitly ordered a main sized portion or whoever typed your order in hit the button twice and it appears as now you are now amending your story to include your husband repeated that mistake a second time – in which case duplicate plates would have arrived at the table and everyone would know what had happened. In relation to your claim we are greedy besides no doubt causing great amusement to our bank manger and accountants all I would say is that we price pretty much everything on a par thus if we give you twice the amount – we charge you twice the amount - in much the same way if you go into McDonald's and order 2 Big Macs you do not get charged for one and a half! Overpriced – well that’s a value judgement entirely down to you. In relation to the atmosphere - I’m sorry we do what we do, some people obviously love us, some don’t. We aren’t and oldy worldly village pub with a character landlord and a slightly damp spaniel. We operate as a restaurant in an environment that suits that style of operation, if we aren’t rushed of our feet trying to offer the levels of service that many other people love, we are happy to engage and talk the hind legs of a Donkey. But most people who come to us are coming for a meal and genuinely want a bit of me time to themselves – so we consciously don’t impose ourselves unless someone engages with us. So all in all you leave us both puzzled, as no one either front of house or in the kitchen can remember doing a “starter as main” in recent months, the slightly different facts each time you post the story and your reluctance to contact us to clarify the exact details of your booking do rather make us hear the faint sounds of an axe being ground. We still aren’t entirely sure whether you ordered a starter expecting a starter or expecting a larger portion. But whatever did happen we find it difficult to believe that there wasn’t an opportunity to raise your issues at the time. You won’t be back – why on earth would you come back to anywhere you so clearly dislike. Our only surprise is that as mentioned in other places you’ve come back on multiple occasions and in each case found the atmosphere unwelcoming. All that being said we have also made it abundantly clear that it is not our policy to charge people for food they did not order or even if they simply did not enjoy it and for that reason, we have already offered you a full refund not only for the extras but for the entire meal. This is an offer you have chosen not to accept, though it remains open, and instead continued to find alternative places to post your views. Best regards Your warm & welcoming Weary Ploughman management team 😃

I love to write a review like this as it is so rare to come across a place where you feel the care and love invested - if only all pubs/ inns/ hotels were run like the Weary Ploughman. Exceptional!

A great location which is perfect for exploring the Brixham area.
