We stayed her for 5 days in July. What an amazing place. The view is unexplainable. The driveway requires you to raise your glass each time you traverse it....not joking. We stayed at the Pie in the Sky 1 and 2 wayyyyy up the mountain. What a great choice. We could hear the howler monkeys each morning. A snake a day for anyone who stays in the jungle. They are amazing creatures. The tree frogs were off the hook too!!!! We had a private chef for the first night which I recommend highly. It's a long drive from San Jose and well worth it.

The place is great for a large group.
No dishwasher.
Howlers is next door; you may want to use that as the primary landmark when looking for the property.
Needs some updating; its rustic. Some rooms had mold.
Plenty of parking.

Beautiful accomodations, spectacular views and amazing people! Went for 2 nights and stayed for 5. Access to all of the Arenal area attractions. Let Nancy arrange your car ( she will make sure you get 4x4 ). She also has access to the best of everything in the area. Don't let the bumpy road deter you ( remember the 4x4 ). You won't regret it!

Pie In The Sky in El Castillo was beyond our expectations in every way. Our entire family’s of 7 ages 19-73 enjoyed staying in the lovely well appointed home. All rooms had nice views. It was wonderful to wake up to the sound of birds, or watch the sun rise from behind the volcano. It was a relaxing place to be in every way. After a day of hiking and zip lining we enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub. Good restaurants nearby so no need to drive to La Fortuna although when we did drive there the trip was easy enough. Staying here was one of the highlights of our Christmas family vacation to Costa Rica. The host Agustin was most helpful. He can recommend tours and hikes. He waited to greet us and show the house in spite of our unexpected late arrival. By the way, don’t miss the opportunity to eat at Howlers just down the hill or The Phoenix nearby.

2 families stayed for 4 nights over spring break and had a fabulous time. As previous reviewer stated lacks indoor hangout space but we didn't miss it- wanted to be out on beautiful deck with view of volcano and lake from morning to night with beautiful warm weather. Loved the pool& hot tub and enjoyed Costa Rican breakfast from Marisol. Z, our host was helpful and entertaining and always there to answer our questions. Hooked us up with fantastic fishing guide, tips on restaurants etc. Close to activities yet remote and feel part of their little village. Loved the locals - awesome place to stay. Each room own bathroom which was great, beds were clean, nice, but hard which we found was somewhat common in CR.

We stayed in pie in the sky 3 with 10 people. The location was perfect overlooking the lake. Great view of Arenal volcano. There was a lots of places to sit and enjoy the view. They had an "eagles nest" that overlooked the entire property. It was nestled right up to the rain forest behind. At night the sounds of the frogs and insects was mesmerizing. There were tons of lightning bugs. It was truly breathtaking.

Very well thought out design. The buildings themselves were a little rustic. Walls were very thin. Could here our friends talking two Bedrooms away.

The downside was the fact that it said internet was available, but it actually wasn't hooked up or available in our building. We had some business to take care of. Very annoying. But the guy did allow us to go and hang out in the other building to do what we needed. He was a nice guy.

The other downside was the bugs in the house. I know bugs. I'm from Arizona. But there were way too many large spiders and hoards of large ants in the house. Once again, I know it's a jungle. But some precautions can be taken to keep some of the critters out. The design of the house allowed for bugs to get in too easily.

Overall, we loved it. Just know what the pros and cons are before.

We thank you for taking the time to write this lovely review. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and could appreciate the surrounding nature. We do apologize about the internet situation at the time you were here, but it was out of our control, as they were rewiring the entire property for internet and phone service. It is now complete and the internet is up and running and dependable. As far as the bugs go, this is the rainforest and there are occasional bugs, so what you are describing is extremely rare and people are always surprised at the fact that we don't have bugs! We have a very attentive maintenance team and work very hard at keeping the bugs in their place in the jungle! We enjoyed you as guests and appreciate your patience with the internet issue and hope you will return again someday! Warmly, Nan and Dan Zintsmaster

We stayed at the Pie in the Sky 2 associated with the Lodge. The view was beyond description. The AC worked well but the Wifi should not be relied on (tough if you need to work while there). The pool is very nice and the house is well stocked. Beautiful house and well represented by the photos on VRBO. I was skeptical that the view would be as good as on the listing. If anything, it was better. The road up to the house absolutely requires 4 wheel drive and some degree of confidence. I suggest getting the directions from to the lodge and/or GPS. Very much worth the drive to get there.

What a great time we had at the Majestic! 7 of us had it all to ourselves and loved spending time with Walter, Rasta and Brian. The pizza and mozza sticks at Howlers were fantastic. Advisable to drive in daylight as driving anywhere in Costa Rica if you aren't used to it at night can be difficult. Really close to Skytrek and La Fortuna. Well worth your stay!

You cannot beat the views of Arenal lake and volcano at Pie in the Sky!! The quaint cabins up on the hill (owned and managed by Nancy, who also owns the Majestic Lodge, which is down the hill) are quiet, clean, and surrounded by beautiful rolling hills. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and also include a pool and yoga deck. We had to pinch ourselves waking up to such a beautiful view every morning. The road to El Castillo is rough and ridden with pot holes, so you will definitely need a car with 4 wheel drive (also needed to get up the steep hill to the cabins). But it is well worth getting away from the tourist hub of La Fortuna. El Castillo is a tiny town off a dirt road where you can truly experience the "pura vida" of Costa Rica. And La Fortuna is a short drive away if you still want to visit the hot springs or restaurants there. Nancy was a great host - very accommodating and extremely helpful in offering advice and recommendations for local activities and food. She made herself available before and throughout our stay to answer all of our questions. She also helped us reserve a private horseback ride with one of her close friends, an El Castillo native who owns a small stable and cattle farm up on top of a hill with the most spectacular views of the lake. This was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Costa Rica! The views on the horseback ride were breathtaking, and then you tie up your horses and hike back into the rainforest to see a private hidden waterfall. WOW! We also enjoyed hiking up the Cerro Chato volcano, which was a very short drive from Pie in the Sky. Thank you so much Nancy for such an amazing stay - we will definitely be back next time we are in Costa Rica!!

Note that the cabins at Pie in the Sky are a different property than Majestic Lodge - we reserved the 1 bedroom cabin at Pie in the Sky via VRBO.

Would have been wonderful views unlawful weather. We were booked to stay in the guest house. When we arrived the person greeting us phoned Nancy and asked if we would rather stay in the self catering chalet which was normally more expensive. We agreed. It was a beautiful place but in hindsight would like to have stayed in the guest house which was beautiful too,and it meant we had to get stuff in for breakfast. The road leading to the place is very bumpy which slows you down and once you are here you don't. really want to go too far. The butterfly sanctuary is well worth a visit and a bit further away the hot springs which was a beautiful experience. There would have been amazing views of Arenal from the self catering accommodation bug unfortunately we did not see it due to weather conditions.
The grill restaurant next door did very good pizzas but be warned they are big. They do give you a doggy bad though
