Beware of the room next to the owner’s office (and front dining room)! Its the image shown in the booking.com profile. Noisy (next to office, so you hear all conversations between guests and the owner, plus her dog barking outside the room window, and phone ringing). Lighting in the room did not allow reading of books - you’d have to use a torch. The only positive is that the room was clean. I acknowledge that other rooms may be much better (I have read sone of the other reviews), even very pleasant and spacious, but my room was unacceptable. I don’t think it should be rented out given its location. You have been warned. I’m sorry I can’t be more positive - perhaps my standards are too high.
Cabinas Los Tucanes was a great place to stay in the charming village of El Castillo, close to Arenal Volcano. We had a spacious upstairs room with a spectacular view of the lake and volcano. The high-ceiling room was bright and spotlessly clean, spacious and had a nice deck. It came equipped with a coffee maker and small refrigerator, and the beds were very comfortable. The owner Fanny served us a delicious breakfast and went out of her way to be helpful in many ways.
Nice room with a funny "kitchen" made like a bathroom. It was clean and the bathroom was OK but without basin (you have to go to the kitchen for cleaning hands or teeth). As there is no breakfast included, we prepared it ourselves with the coffee maker and some stuff purchased at the local supermarket. The way to the lake is not very long and can be easily done walking. There is also an "Ecozoo" almost in front of the room. Good place for a short stay.
Loved our room here – the first time we’ve had a fridge on our travels in Nicaragua & Costa Rica! – and the coffee machine and cups, plates, etc were a really nice touch. The room was spotlessly clean and the location is great for visiting Volcán Arenal, the Laguna, local hot springs and the Arenal Observatory Lodge trails.
I stayed at this place with my family. We had a big and nice room for a reasonable price. The owner was really nice, she even helped me sending me the stuff I forgot in the room. The area around is great. Just in front of the house there is the amazing view of the volcano. The only thing I did not like is that you can not sit outside because just in front of your door there are parked cars. This is because there are not other car parks around there. Thanks for all!
Los Tucanes is small, family run, very conveniently located and was run very professionally. Fanny met all our needs, linked us in with local transport, cleaned our room thoroughly every day and did our laundry for a small fee.....freeing us up to explore and enjoy this amazing locality. We were very happy to have found Los Tucanes.
We enjoyed both our nights here. The view was decent, I would request an upstairs room for a better view. The room conveniently had a full size bed in one room and a small separate room with another queen bed, perfect for my dad and I to have some privacy . The breakfast was great, with a good view. My only complaint is that the road was a little loud during the night...not much traffic but when it did come, it was loud. The family who runs it is absolutely amazing! She set us up with great rafting and horseback riding tours. We also had and mishap with losing our car key in the hot springs river. She was extremely helpful in communicating with our car rental agency in figuring out how to get another key. Her husband ended up driving to the airport to get our key and bringing the car to us so we could do a rafting tour. He charged us a very reasonable fee. They turned a major disaster into a positive situation. I am so thankful for the owners! I also loved that we got to support a Costa Rican family business. I definitely recommend staying here.…
Beautifully located with a view over lake Arenal and the volcano. Nice to be situated close to the jungle and away from cities. A few restaurants located near by with very tasty food! Friendly staff cleaning our room, helping with bookings and laundry.
We did not actually stay at the cabins, but we used their services. Mauricio (owner) was our driver while we were in Arenal and he was great. Very knowledgeable, always on time, and reasonably priced.
This by far was one of the best stays of the trip. Fanny (owner) has made Tucanes warm and inviting. No TV or radio, and why would you need them? Your a stones throw from Lake and Arenal Volcano, Cerro Chata Volcano & Caldera Lake and La Fortuna. The room rates are a true value and there's so much wildlife and nightlife within half and hour drive. The breakfasts are scrumptious. Gallo Pinto, eggs, plantains, fresh coffee and a festively decorated fruit plate. The rooms are clean and all 3 (yes only 3 rooms) have great views and plenty of space. Top floor has best view and 3 beds, First floor (in my room) had 2 rooms and beds. Hot water never ran out and Fanny called to schedule our canyoneering trip making our stay even more relaxing. If you're in the area, pass on the hustle bustle of La Fortuna and experience a genuine stay at this El Castillo gem!…
