The room was nice, fantastic bed and shower, hotel staff is wonderful. They do there best to make your time there as pleasant as possible but breakfast/ bar is run by an external company and they are a different story. If you like resorts this place is ok but people at breakfast are unpleasant and not there to make you happy. They don’t mind what you think or want and then it becomes an expensive place for what it is.
This is a lovely hotel/resort on the beach. Nice hot and cold breakfast buffet daily, all tables in covered area just a few feet from the sand. The bar is there, too; drinks a little pricey but they have whatever you want. All rooms are at a slant, so you don’t get a full-on ocean view. We spent a lot of time on the large patio outside of the room. The jr.suite is all one room, but the toilet is in it’s own separate room, which is always nice. Double sinks, roomy bathroom. The front desk staff is super helpful and gracious, giving out towels or extra coffee creamers, etc. The room had a kitchenette, and a great expresso machine—better coffee than is at the restaurant. We were so happy to find plenty of stores and restaurants just a few minutes walk outside of the resort. Never had a bad meal at any of them. Nice dinner restaurants don’t open until 5:00. We also found one that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, so we went there several times to get sandwiches. Pictures included in this review. The only downside was the house keeping service. They often came late in the day, so we would get back from the beach and find the room still hadn’t been cleaned. One time I think they forgot us completely; it was 3:40, still not cleaned. I asked at the front desk and they did send someone up. However, they never replenished towels, and sometimes didn’t take away the trash(?) Never had that lack of care at a nice hotel like this one. We went in January, and it was very windy every day.…
Wow! What an amazing hotel in one of the best places to stay on St Martin. We stayed here with kids (14 and 5) and loved it. The management and staff are so amazing and professional. Special shout out to Katy and Elena. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and La Playa has direct access to Orient Beach and within walking distance to amazing restaurants. The bar by the hotel (GP’s Place) is perfect and run by great people. Thank you, GP! We will defiantly be back to stay at La Playa.
Wow wow wow! What a great hotel with excellent service!! The rooms are comfortable with small kitchenettes so we could stick to healthy snacks. We were there the week after new years and the weather was perfect. The beach is soft and sandy with turquoise water. Great walking beach too! Close to the town square with a nice choice of restaurants. The first day we arrived I left the car on and the front desk staff came to look for us at dinner to let us know. No easy task! I’d definitely go again! I’d stay at La Plays again for the beach, the pool, the comfort and the staff! We loved it!
We just returned back home to Los Angeles from a 9 night stay with our family of five at La Playa Orient Bay. Our kids are ages 19, 17 and 12. We had two rooms. We have travelled the world and stayed at the finest hotels; for this trip, we flew to St Maarten via Miami because we were in Israel the week before at the Waldorf. Here's why we loved La Playa Orient Bay: 1) The service was next level fabulous and attentive. Katy and Franck greeted guests personally often. Their staff in the front lobby, restaurant, beach, bartenders, housekeeping, coffee/tea service--in other words, their staff everywhere--were all very happy to take great care of their guests with warm and wonderful smiles, always. This service was consistent even throughout the emails I exchanged when booking the rooms many months ago. The restaurant recommendations we received via email before we arrived were spot on- excellent choices. Katy and Franck left us a handwritten note on our last morning before we left (so nice) and even the bellboy called us twice to make sure to carry our bags out when our airport transportation was there. Flawless service. 2) The rooms were huge, impeccably-clean, with very comfortable white bed linens/ mattress, with all amenities including remote control bells and whistles, balcony etc. Rooms felt almost twice the size to me as a typical hotel room. Even my teenage kids were thrilled with the rooms-- size, design, comfort, everything. 3) Food was fantastic-- breakfast buffet had everything we could want from fruit to eggs. We had a lot of sushi for lunch daily-- we loved the hungry roll and la playa tuna bowls. We mostly ate at the La Playa beachside restaurant tables and had a few lunches served to us at the beach chairs. Mixed drinks were perfect- nice amount of alcohol! 4) The beach is a two minute walk from the rooms-- perfect, easy, location and the beach chairs are right at the water shore. It was sunny and warm-- we all came home very tan. Hotel guests get to pick beach chairs anywhere in the VIP guest section along the beach and even in peak season, we found the best chairs every day...we went to the beach to reserve chairs around 9:00 am. We spent a lot of time in the ocean bodysurfing, boogieboarding and doing the nearby water sports (jetski, parasail). The ocean was warm enough and swimmable. 5) Orient Bay location couldn't be better as there's everything walkable including a supermarket and many restaurant choices. We loved the new years evening beach party at Bikini Beach next door (it went until 5:00 am with a fun DJ) and spent Xmas brunch at CocoBeach nearby for their day party. Fun, fun, fun. 6) We drove our rental car a few nights for dinner to Gran Case. Just a 10 min drive. Across all our travels and even over tropical vacations (Mexico, Hawaii etc), this was our best trip because of La Playa's hospitality, facilities, service and location. We enjoyed everyone's French style, fun disposition and cool accents because it was so different than other tropical vacations for us. Excellence and culture meets paradise--through and through! My teenage kids are still replaying French dance music because it reminds them of their stay there. Thank you to the team at La Playa for giving us a family trip we will remember forever.…
Fantastic hotel! It feels like a little slice of France in the Caribbean. Wonderful service and perfect location. Having breakfast (and lunch!) on the beach was luxurious. Great bar and bartender as well. Can’t wait to come back.
Wonderful hotel. Right on the center of Orient beach. Great breakfast buffet, bar, restaurants and beach seating areas. Room was comfortable and stylish. Service was top notch. Elena is amazing! Our car ran out of battery and she helped us get sorted back to normal. Great time; I will definitely be back.
We have stayed at La Playa annually for many years. It is our absolute favourite 🎄pre-holiday season get away. With comfy king beds, beach inspired and well appointed rooms, tropical grounds and wonderful beach front restaurant, it is the perfect vacation destination. The hotel and restaurant staff are all friendly, welcoming and helpful. We love nothing more than to start every day in St Martin with breakfast overlooking Orient Bay and lingering with an extra java of choice from the La Playa Expresso Bar. Then off to the beach to enjoy, a swim, a couple of beach walks, a good book and more of La Playa’s wonderful beach side service! There are lots of great spots to enjoy dinner out and a little grocery store to pick up snacks for an evening in. All just a short walk away. We highly recommend this sweet spot on Orient Bay. Katy and her team continue to impress us each year with all that they do to offer quests the best possible experience! Mark and Jane Walker…
Few feets from the beach, you get a cosy hotel and room. All renewed with very well designed and eauiped rooms. Nice place for a rest with friendly staff in the hotel part. The breakfast, drinks and lunch are taken on a separated part right on the beach and belonging to another company also providing the sunbeds on the beach. Here is the only issue we found, the coffee machine capacity is not enough for the peak hours, so you need to queue-up. But the issue is known and they are working on it. A second boiler with coffee was added at the middle of our stay and it improved a lot. All in all, a nice place to stay.
We planned 5 nights, we ran away after 2. The pros: the beach is beautiful (more below), rooms are clean, hotel is boutique size, and is close to restaurants. The "baguette" at the restaurant is good. The cons: the website says it's a 4 star hotel, whereas it's actually 3 (as mentioned on the LinkedIn profile of the sales manager Beatrice, who happens to be an expert in real estate tax optimization). All pictures shown on the website actually show a part of the beach which is not accessible to hotel guests, but reserved for day rentals (30 USD / day / bed). The area where you can actually stay as a hotel guest is further away, and does not enjoy the same service: no removal of seaweed, no sand grooming. The beach attendant fancies himself as some sort of cool dude calling everyone "buddy". Staff is at best uninterested, at worst downright aggressive (special award to that same sales manager and to the restaurant owner / manager). We found some broken glass on the terrace of our "garden view" room, and said garden (rather a lawn with a fence) was occupied an entire day by a noisy repair crew. The really ugly: the breakfast is worth that of an average highway motel - we ate better in Best Western properties. There is one single coffee machine, slow, and at peak hour it can take up to 15 min to get a coffee (I was so incredulous I actually timed it). The cut fruits are not fresh, and neither are the juices. Daily menu consists of wet soggy scrambled or hard boiled eggs and/or bacon. We saw some people eating pancakes, but could never be fast enough to get a few ourselves. The restaurant is a separate business from the hotel and takes absolutely no responsibility for the promises made by the hotel (and vice versa). Smoking is permitted in every each area of the hotel and restaurant, including the breakfast area and beach. Many of the staff are also heavy smokers. We arranged for non-dairy milk 2 weeks prior to arrival, only to find it had not been arranged at all. The tragic: we are vegetarians, whereas the restaurant menu has only 2 rather sad options that do not contain meat or fish (an overpriced watermelon salad and quesadillas), and has a policy of forcing guests to consume only their food and beverages while on the beach beds. The restaurant owner complained he was "forced to stand our vegetarian food requests" - and made it clear he considered it our problem, not his. Any attempt to consume outside, vegetarian food on the bed is reported by the "buddy" beach attendant who spends his ample free time observing guests for illegal activities like eating non-approved food. As stated in several other reviews, "buddy" starts cleaning beach beds at 3PM, and you better be gone by 5. That same restaurant owner basically yelled at me that he "did not give a xxxx" about Trip Advisor reviews, so I am eager to read their reply to this one. In conclusion: massively overpriced, run by rude staff, and if you are not a combination of a meat eater, smoker, and French, expect to be treated like an annoyance.
