We received a warm welcome on arrival at the hotel. Receptionist spoke English and offered us drinks which was lovely with the bar overlooking the river. The pool was open which was ideal because we had found many hotel pools closed in April. The pool wasn't heated but was warm enough being sited in the sun. Room wasn't big but had a lovely view of the river and a balcony to sit on. Breakfast was good.

The hotel, and its twin, are in a good location overlooking the river. It has a functional feel, it could perhaps do with some more colour, but our room was large and comfortable - and had a huge terrace with expansive views. We had a good breakfast, and an excellent outside bar features in the communal area bridging the hotel with its neighbour the Museu.

There was no one at the reception, had to go to the hotel next to it to get the receptionist, as they didn't pick the call as indicated at the reception.
I have selected a double bed, and got two single beds joint together.
Wifi is almost unexistent. When you get a signal, it gets lot of time to load a page.
Balcony only had one chair, and with bird poop extra, not cleaned between days.
You could here everything from other rooms, fortunately the guests were almost always very quiet.
Too much expensive for what it offers.
The hotel is close to the city center.
Easy to park for free.

Great budget option. Room was clean and beds were comfortable. Outdoor terrace was lovely and the pool, shared with the Museu hotel, was great. It seems the two hotels share most of the facilities. Check in and out was good and the location was good for exploring the town.

Beautiful hotel shared with the hotel next door Museu. Small but very clean rooms. Staff were very friendly, check in was great. We had a side room but still had a beautiful view overlooking the river. Great location. Totally recommend this hotel.

This hotel (residencia) is situated right by the River Guadiana and has great views if this and the old city walls right up the castle, which is floodlit at night.
We booked a suite with a balcony/terrace which was great. It was clean, spacious and comfortable. The hotel is very close to all facilities Mertola has to offer is a nice quiet place to stay. We found the staff friendly and helpful. We did not take the available breakfast as there was a nice coffee shop just up the road.
Mertola is a very interesting place to visit, with an historical background. It has some nice restaurants albeit they were closed a night when we visited in November.
Will go again.........oh yes!
Top tip; take good walking shoes if you wish to explore the castle and old town!

Beira Rio

This was our third stay here, this time with friends, and, as usual, we enjoyed it.

The rooms on the first floor of the older building and those on the car park level of the new adjoining building have very large terraces overlooking the River Gilhao and with storks flying beneath you. The former rooms have more traditional furnishings and the latter modern decor. We have enjoyed both. There is A/C, TV including English language news, and comfortable beds and bathroom. Sadly, the building of the new, and to us, ugly Museum Hotel next door and lower down the road (and which is run with the Beiro Rio, including being its reception) has taken some of the room terraces’ view of the castle, which is lovely both during the day, and at night when it is floodlit. The town walls are sparking whitewash and these and the bellower – complete with nesting storks - are still visible. The view remains amazing outside in the street; this is a cul de sac down to the river and old ferry area but traffic does use it, so be careful. The new Museum Hotel has also taken some of the Beiro Rio’s former car park but it is fine to park in the street.

Breakfasts are good do it your self – breads, toast, cheeses, ham, cake, fruits, cereal, coffee and tea.

There is a bar and restaurant at the top of the Residencial’s steep street but most of the restaurants are back along the one way street in the big square at the opposite end.

There is a tourist information centre and which links several small museums, the castle (much better and safer access than our last visit), a Roman excavation and the Parish Church of St. Mary Among the Vineyards, a 5 arched church which was originally built as a mosque.

Mertola is a good base for the southern Alentejo Plains and thus for bird watchers. Both the the iconic Little and Great Bustards live there, and the Portuguese are beginning to recognise their importance and tourist appeal

We like this, as you can tell! This time we brought friends who also enjoyed it.

Our 16.6.15 review outlines the Beiro Rio and its next door sister property Hotel Museu. We prefer the more traditional Beiro Rio and in particular the rooms at a lower level with enormous terraces overlooking the river Guadiano and the other bank.

Ask NOT to have the disability access room. The bathroom has several helpful aids but the shower has lever controls that dig into non wheelchair users and thus swiftly change the temperature and flow speed.

The rooms are rather basic but fine and now more modern in décor. They now have super hard mattresses (having been rather soft before)! And it would be nice if the double beds were wider. There are flatscreen TVs.

The a/c is good, and so too now is the wifi. A fridge would be a welcome addition, and also a room safety deposit box.

Since 2015, they had amazingly managed to carve a swimming pool out of the side of the steep bank, and which was very welcome as it was very hot during our stay. The only downside was that was no shade there.

They have developed a big cycling clientele, as well as birdwatchers for the nearby Alentejo plains.

They have opened a large more airy room for the buffet breakfasts and the food and hot drinks have improved. Large groups are able to have pre-booked dinner there. There are a number of good restaurants in town.

The area between the two buildings is now a large patio terrace where you can carry breakfast and operates as a bar and meeting area all day and evening.

There have storage space for bikes, and cars park on the steep cul de sac road.

They hire out kayaks, and offer river trips depending on the tide. This time the boatman offered no commentary in any language and was immersed in his mobile phone, but the scenery is lovely and the view up to the medieval walled castle from the two rivers below it is striking.

There are Roman archaeological remains on view in the basement of the Hotel Museu.

If you are looking for a quiet relaxing stay in Mertola DON'T come here.
We have been here several times, due to the poor choices around, but this is absolutely the last one.
The rooms have such thin walls that you hear every small noise of the entire floor as if you were in. The water pipes makes such strong noise, as well as the wood stairs, that soon as one guest is up the entire floor cannot sleep again.
This time we stayed here 3 nights (because we were forced to pay in advance) we didn't manage to wake up any day after 8:00 am.
We paid 43 euros for a monastic small room. More than any private accomodation in the area. It wasn't worth.

I don't remember an elevator, and the stairs are quite tight. There are also a few stairs to enter the building, I'm guessing at 5-10. If you want to avoid stairs you might be better staying in the adjacent Museo. It's essentially the same hotel. Don't know if this has an elevator but it is quite new.
