You nay may start thinking that kanji is not so difficult. The second last sign in the name of the hotel looks like three boxes, in other words, goods (shina). The last sign is clearly a stream, a river (kawa, gawa). This place used to be a port for goods into Tokyo. Remembering this makes it easy to find the way home from everywhere in Tokyo, just look for the goods and the river.
I found the staff to be very good and had no problems with my little Japanese language skills and their basic hotel counter English skills.
The morning buffet is excellent! No real Western food except for croissants, but the Japanese choices were varied and very tasty. The breakfast is not included in the hotel rate. It costs 1000Y after a meager 80Y discount. I ate there several days, but other days I walked across the street to the Aeon Mall and got food for a bit less.
The mall has three levels and a good variety of stores and restaurants, which are very busy over the noon hour and after work. Most of the mall is smoke-free.
A bus stop about 200 meters from the hotel entrance connects to Shinagawa station. There are many shops and eating places there and in the nearby area, including a Friday's and US-style "squat-and-gobbles" like Burger King and MacDonald's if you are missing Western fare. From this station it is easy to get to Tokyo Station and even more businesses and restaurants. You can catch a bus to Narita Airport from the Prince Hotel here if your hotel is not on the airport bus route.
There is also a subway stop under the bus stop near the hotel that will provide express service to Tokyo and Odaiba. Odaiba has a ton of things to see and do. This subway is called the Tokyo Teleport, though actual beaming or teleportation is not yet in use.
I will stay here again my next visit to Japan. I had no problems and the small basic room was an excellent base for my day visits. I have only one complaint--there are few stations on their cable TV, none in a language other than Japanese, and none with foreign language closed captioning. My rating would otherwise be 5/5 for my needs at this Hearton.
A couple of other little niggles - the kettle in my room didn't work during the first stay and the room safe was defective during the second. Having said that the place offered a good opportunity to sleep without earplugs, the air-conditioning was good and the lift service was prompt and reliable. Front desk staff did their best with me as a non-Japanese speaker but I felt unable to communicate the issues regarding the kettle and room safe. Probably depended who was on duty but they all do want to help.
Hint - if you are travelling to Tokyo for the first time and are planning to use public transport but are confused by the various mixes of public and private lines just visit the JR East office upon arrival at Haneda Airport. The very friendly and helpful staff issued me with a SUICA card which is a card that you pay 500 yen deposit for, refundable when you leave together with any balance that you've got left on your card. You just top the card up with amounts that you need to make your journeys and it doesn't matter - you can use it on the monorail, the Rinkai and loads of other lines. Just check if you're not sure.
In short, avoid this hotel if you're a tourist. I was so glad I made the decision to move to Shibuya to spend the remaining of my vacation in Japan.
