We arrived at Narita airport and really had a tough time initially to go by train to Asakusa area where this hotel was based. Luckily for us, we managed to get to the Ueno station which I knew had a hotel shuttle to the hotel at scheduled times. Lucky for us we arrived at a perfect time to see the...

Arriving on Sunday evening, after leaving Newcastle, the day before at 1.30pm, tired and ready to put our weary bodies on the bed! We were given a room on the fifth floor which was small and compact but seemed clean and the bedding well laundered. It had a window looking onto the next door building in very close proximity but...

Conveniently located near Kuramae Station of Toie Oedo line Exit 6 (3 minute walk) and near Senso Ji, one of the oldest Buddhist temples of Japan and Tokyo Skytree, currently the tallest communication tower in the world with spectacular views of Tokyo and Mt Fuji in the distance. The hotel provided me with clean towels daily, a comb and shave,...

Stayed in more than 20 of the Toyoko Inn's around Japan over the last 6 years, including 3 years while living there. This one has to be the worst of the chain. Stayed at this one 2 times, and it will be the last. The rooms given are the standard Toyoko Inn size which is fine, but is wedged up...

As my son lives in Kuramae I was looking for hotel for a couple of nights which was within walking distance to his apartment. I found this hotel within a few minutes walk. I booked a double room on about the 8th floor. (single rooms or twin bedded rooms are on lower floors and look into a building). The room...

The hotel is located near 2 different metro lines and 1 of them has a direct metro to Narita Airport. If you are carrying your luggage, make sure that you use the right exit so that there is an elevator. Otherwise you will need to carry your luggage up and down the stairs. There are convenient stores close by. It...

Small, typical japanese hotel, not any luxury but every thing that you need for a stay. wifi at rooms is also convenient. Perfect location, very close to subway and Asakusa main attractions, easy to find the hotel. It was a little bit noisy at nights since it is on the main street, but not really important. Early checkout such as...

After breakfast on day two we ventured out into the cold snow icy blizzard conditions which Tokyo was experiencing (the worst for 40 years), around 1 pm it was simply too cold for outdoor exploration so we returned to our hotel room. The bed had been re-made, the room tidied, however some cleaning rags remained at the base of the...

This hotel is typical of all of the Toyoko Inn hotels we stayed in on our trip to Japan. It was clean and comfortable (although the beds are typically firm), the staff were polite and helpful despite speaking limited English, and the free breakfast of rice dishes, miso soup, bread and spreads, and coffee/green tea filling. Our non-smoking room was...

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
