We were shifting to Ghaziabad (Delhi NCR) and as we did not have any place to stay before the house was in order (in fact we did not want to stay with any relative or friend), we decided to stay in a hotel. While choosing a hotel, we had few things in mind, should be close to our house, should not be an OYO property and pricing of our stay should not be on a very high side. We searched through Makemytrip.com and finalised a property named VVIP Suites by Trot.
Had many reasons for the selection of the same:
This property was in the same locality where our house was, so it would be easier for us to visit the house at the time of unloading, unpacking etc.
It was part of one of the most hyped societies of our localities, so assumed it would be decent.
It had car parking space
The reviews in Makemytrip were amazing (all above 4 star)
We paid for 2 nights. We were travelling by road and knew that we would reach the hotel only by 4.00 – 4.30 pm. Had already informed of extra bed (also paid for it) and late check in, at the time of booking.
We reached the locality and VVIP addresses (that is where the hotel is located). We reached the Entry gate (as directed by Google Map – met with a rude shock, the guard at the entry gate refused to allow entry saying that we would have to use some other gate for the hotel and we should have a room number. It was really time consuming to inform him that we still need to check in (not willing to understand). Finally after 10 minutes were allowed through that gate, realised that the hotel was inside a residential society. In a few minutes after asking for directions multiple times we reached a building outside of which was an arrow showing VVIP Suites. We checked out for parking and were informed by some shopkeepers that the place infront of their shops is the parking space and the entry to the hotel is from the back side.
We parked our car and went looking for the hotel reception, so that someone can come and pick our luggage. Another shocker – at the backside was a swimming pool, part of the clubhouse of the society, we were directed to go inside the building (which was club house of the society till 3rd floor and it was only from the 4th floor the hotel started.
We reached the 4th floor, just in front of the lift landing is a small reception and a small cafe/restaurant. At the reception , met this gentleman – Mr. Vivek, who checked us in, and also highlighted we would have got a better price if we had booked directly (though when after 2 nights we confirmed on the prices – found that the package they were offering was much higher than one offered by Makemytrip). He also informed that the next good property in the vicinity is the Fortune hotel and that would be quiet a distance.
Anyway, was allotted room on the 7th floor and one Mr. Manoj was instructed to accompany me to the room. My spouse went to bring in our luggage along with another gentleman.
Our horrific experience started the moment we opened the room. The entry door was not opening or closing properly, then the room (though big in size) was hot and stuffy as the Air Conditioning had not been switched on. Mr. Manoj switched on the AC and went off. None of the doors (neither entry nor washroom was closing properly), air conditioning was non functional, so the housekeeping / reception was called. The maintenance guy (same Mr. Manoj) turned up after 3 calls. He came in an banged the Air Conditioner to start it, voila it started, for the door, he adjusted a few screws on the door lock. He informed us that they don’t keep the AC’s switched in the guest room before his arrival. We agreed to his explanation. A mattress was put in the room – this was the extra bed.
Now coming to room – probably earlier the VVIP group had planned on selling furnished Studio Apartments and these were just that – a good big size room with attached balcony, an open kitchen with a small dining area, functional refrigerator, microwave and tea and coffee maker. The room had a large dresser area with one wall acting as cupboard; a large LCD TV. Furnishing was tasteful but there was an issue in terms of cleaning.
The room had dirt, old garland (hidden behind the TV console – became visible when we were trying to plug in our mobile chargers) and flower petals.
The in house dining was pricey and we were clearly told that we can order from Swiggy and Zomato. (And that is what we did during our stay).
We adjusted, though every time there was an issue with entry in the society, entry to be done from this gate and not that gate and so on. The entry and exit gate for the hotel was on a road which was in shambles, broken, muddy and when it rained water logged.
Anyway on the 2nd evening of our stay we checked if we could extend our stay (as our house was still not in condition where we could go and live in it), and we were not minding the door issue, the ac issue as we were just coming back in evening after completing work at our home. The reception guy informed that we could and the pricing would be X plus taxes, finally after haggling and negotiations it became All Inclusive price on CP or Continental Plan (Breakfast included). This was way to higher but we agreed and were told, only once we check out tomorrow we can check in (understandable). We agreed and went to our room. At 10.00 pm suddenly there was no electricity in the room, where as there was electricity in the society (houses in front of our building had electricity, there was road light and so on), the intercom was not working. So we opened the door and were surprised to see that only our room did not have electricity, walked down 3 floors to the reception to inform that there is no electricity in the room. They promised to send in a technician to repair the same soon. After 15 minutes one guy arrived and started fiddling with the MCB box in the room. He had no idea of what was the issue and how to rectify it. Nothing happened.
We again walked down to the reception area on the 4th floor and were informed that due to some technical issue (and not switching on the generator) there was no electricity on 2 floors including ours. The person at the reception (one in the photograph) informed that he has personally switched on the generator and the issue should be resolved soon.
We went back to our dark room and thankfully after few minutes the electricity came. It was already 11.30 pm. Just after 5 minutes the room again was pitch dark, there was no electricity. It was really irritating. I walked down to the reception again, really angry and annoyed. The gentleman at the reception was not even bothered about resolving the issue. His standard answer was – Why can’t you adjust, Kya aapke ghar par light nahin jaati? (Don’t you have power cuts at home). I informed that we are paying for the stay and that he cannot talk like this and he needs to inform us about the resolution. To this he called up his manager (the same Mr. Vivek whom we had met at the time of check in), who started acting all bossy- he told me that if we have an issue we can check out (it was already post 11.30 pm), I asked him to compensate and as I was being asked for checking out I needed a refund on my booking
This was blankly refused, no compensation and no refund, we can do whatever we want to do and Agar jyada shor machaya toh Police bula lenge, raat thane main gujarana (if I crib or complaint a lot, he would call police and then we can spend the night in the police station). This was the limit, I told him to please inform the police and if he can’t do that let me call the police. On this the phone was immediately disconnected.
Then a few other employees just walked in and tried telling that this was one off problem and we should learn to adjust. One gentleman who identified himself as F&B manager even went to the extent of saying that I am a lady and this is Ghaziabad, Raat bhar main aapke saath kya ho jayega aapko pata bhi nahin (what might happen to me in night I don’t even know). I called up an acquaintance in Media (a well known Hindi Daily newspaper) and informed him of the situation. The acquaintance spoke to the person in reception and on Speaker also told me that in case of any further issue, I just need to call him and the police team from the local station would be there to handle the matter. Post this the scenario changed, the reception guy called up someone, then assured us that the electricity issue has been resolved and we would have no issues now.
I went back to the room, yes there was electricity, just within 5 minutes there was no electricity. I again went down and asked the reception guy to change our room on the floor where there was electricity. It was already 12 o clock. He immediately agreed and allotted us a room on the 4th floor (just close to the reception). We moved our baggage in darkness using our mobile phone torches. The room was smaller and now the reception guy wanted to offer tea and coffee (which is already there in the room), we refused.
There was no extra mattress, but we didn’t bother. We were tired, sleepy and exhausted. Thankfully there was no further interruption. In the morning by 10.00 am, we told them we are checking out and they should complete the check out formality. I walked up to the reception, where the same gentleman was there. When I asked him for the bill, he said it would be better if I take the bill online. I actually had to tell him that he couldn’t refuse the bill. Finally the bill was provided. Then there was no one to pick our luggage. My spouse and son took some stuff, and I brought in the other stuff till the lift. A guest staying there decided to help to put the stuff in the lift.
This is one of the worst experience I have had. The way the entire team behaved, the condition of cleaning and maintenance, all went on to show that this property was a big blot on the hospitality industry. Not at all professionally managed and it appears that all the reviews on Makemytrip were either fake or paid ones. It’s a big no for family stay.
PS. – We paid a good amount for the stay (without any meals0, in fact in just a Rs. 1000 we stayed in ITC Fortune hotel in the same city. Reviews for the same will follow.
