The resort is very conveniently located very close to the Moharli Core Gate. But even if you have planned your safari at some other gate, Irai Safari Retreat is where you should stay! This place is about a 3 hour drive from Nagpur Railway station. The roads are decent. Would suggest to take a train to Nagpur and thereafter drive to Irai Resort. Our experience was excellent right from the time of check-in. Deepak Pate (naturalist and wildlife photographer) and Vaibhav (F&B, housekeeping, general maintenance) immediately made us feel very welcome. We'd reached much before the check-in time but they made sure the cottage was available before noon. The resort has 'tents' as well and though we stayed in the cottage, the tents too seem quite comfortable. The cottage rooms are spacious, clean and well-maintained. They could do with some additional lighting though. The beds are very comfortable and you could get extra mattresses / blankets per your request. They have boilers for their cottages - so you get 24-hour running hot water as well. This helps if you visit in the colder months! They have an electric kettle in the room with tea/coffee sachets and an electronic safe to keep your important stuff. There's an open space just outside your room in the cottage where there's a hammock, if you just want to relax in the nature. The place is disabled-friendly - so no climbing of too many stairs for the elderly. If you are visiting with old people who aren't able to climb too many stairs, please make sure to let the resort know in advance so that they can book you in the rooms at ground level. There is a separate dining area and a lounge area just outside it for more comfortable seating. The resort provides room service as well - meaning you can request the food to be delivered to your rooms / cottage. We preferred to eat in the main dining area as its more comfortable and you get to exchange notes with fellow tourists and of course with Deepak, Akshay (another naturalist), Vaibhav and team. The food is excellent. We stayed for 4 nights and not a single time was any dish repeated! The chef provides a lot of variety and also goes out of the way to customize a meal should you have any allergies, etc. You get Jain food as well (you need to tell them in advance obviously). Fish eaters may be a tad disappointed as there is little choice in a land-locked area - though if you tell them a day in advance, they could make arrangements for the same. You could get some sweet-water fish. The fresh lemon soda, though relatively a simple item, is excellent, and I've never tasted anything like that elsewhere. There's a recreation room cum library just above the dining area. There's a staircase to access the same. There's table tennis, carrom and some board games. There's a good collection of books. This is a good place to spend some time in the late evening after the afternoon safari. Coming to the main point - the safaris itself. A strong suggestion - book the rooms and the safaris directly with the resort. Do not go through any travel agent. Your chances of getting a safari booking dramatically improve if you book through the resort. This, I understand, is because the resorts have some type of VIP quota available for guests. Another strong suggestion - you could request one of the naturalists to accompany you on the safaris. We were luck to get the experienced Deepak Pate to accompany us on each of our safaris. Yes, there is the safari vehicle driver and the guide who are also there in the safari vehicle. But having a naturalist, especially of the calibre of Deepak Pate accompanying you, is a strong advantage. That way, even if you are unfortunate not to have a tiger sighting, the naturalist keeps you engaged with a lot of other finer details of the jungle. This is should be one good reason enough to do your bookings at Irai Safari Retreat only! The resort provides you some small packed breakfast (sandwiches / fruit) if you are going on a morning safari - but it again provides you a full breakfast when you return around 10:30 or so. I have been to other safaris elsewhere and not many resorts provide such flexibility. From a customer service point of view, this is another plus. We visited on Christmas day and the resort had organised a barbecue and tribal dance. There were wood fires (it was cold!) with seats around them. A very nice set up. The resort also provides on request, the flexibility of barbecue dinners (private party) at your cottage if there's a celebration. We saw another family having such celebration during our stay. We visited in December - and we plan to go back to the same resort in May as well!!

Me, My wife and 2 kids (5yrs and 1.5yrs) visited this place on 16th December 2021 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Key points: 1) The property is situated in proximity to the core as well as buffer safari zones. 2) Detailing of the property - It is very evident that the property is done very tastefully, lot of antiques, artefacts and handyness is seen everywhere. 3) Food - The food is okay, not a very huge spread but sufficient and nothing to complain about. 4) Staff and service: The staff is largely local so they are versed with the surroundings. Will always great with a smiling face. The service is impeccable, very prompt, Mr. Rahul at the reception manages the staff well and any request is addressed very swiftly. After speaking with Rahul, got to know that he's been with the property right from the time of its initiation. Kudos to Mr. Rahul and his staff 👍 5) Naturalists: Mr. Deepak Pate, the senior naturalist is a seasoned naturalist and very knowledgeable. We were accompanied by Naturalist, Mr. Akshay Suryawanshi on our safari and the most amazing tiger sightings we had, we owe to his knowledge and passion. Mr. Akshay has built good contacts with the safari drivers and guides and has created a small brilliant team within guides and Safari drivers. Mr. Akshay is even more keen on sighting a tiger than the guests themselves are, I think this does make a lot of difference. A super spacial thanks to Mr. Akshay Suryawanshi 👍 6) Access, we'd drove down from Pune and the route currently is brilliant. Concrete road till the gate of property. tip: the property gate shown by the Google map is from a different lane/side, not a big problem, the villagers guide you if you ask them.

We had a fantastic experience staying at the Irai Safari Retreat. We stayed there for 3 nights and in total went for four safaris. The cottages were clean and had all the modern amenities. Since we went along with my 85 year old grandmom, we had some special requests such as wheel chair assistance, heater in the room, and in-room dining facilities. All these facilities were provided with utmost care. The staff were extremely courteous and went the extra mile to make our stay very comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious and most of the ingredients were locally sourced. For the safaris, we booked via the lodge and the pickup was arranged directly from the resort. We also hired the services of their naturalist Mr. Deepak Pate. Mr. Deepak has vast amount of knowledge about the jungle and shared many interesting stories. We were lucky enough to spot tigress Sonam marking her territory during a safari and tigress Lara majestically walking towards us in another safari. Special praise should be made to the Gypsy drivers and the local guides who make a sincere and an earnest effort to make sure that we have a good safari experience.
