Incredible location secluded in beautiful vineyards, while accessible from cities like Logrono, Pamplona, Bilbao, and Vitoria. Unique hotel environment in an architectural art-piece. Excellent innovative food inspired in traditional Spanish cuisine. And extraordinary hotel staff: really cared to provide great service, appeared to enjoy their jobs, was very nice and well-trained.

This is a really good hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had a huge room, one of the Riscal suites, which was clean, incredibly comfortable and had nice views. Full marks also for the inclusion of a comprehensive paper hotel guide in the room ... something that seems to be absent from many hotel rooms these days, which often means making calls to the front desk to ask basic questions. I would have quite liked a coat stand next to the door, though. There was a little alcove in room 302 which would have been perfect for this! The bathroom was vast, and had every conceivable amenity. And this is a small thing, but the wonderful shower also had a little tray at chest height for putting bottles of shampoo and soap on. In many hotel bathrooms you have to crouch down to pick up things from the shower tray. The building is obviously amazing, and I don't need to say any more about that. The Michelin restaurant was shut during our stay but the food in the 1860 Tradición restaurant was very nice indeed. And the breakfast ... oh what a joy it is to be in a hotel that does not have a wretched buffet ... to be served breakfast at our table was wonderful, and the food was delicious. There was a lovely spa area and pool, and we both enjoyed massages. We loved the wine tour and tasting, given by Adrián, which was really quite interesting (and we have done rather a lot of wine tours!). Best of all though, was the staff. From the ever-patient and helpful Luis and his co-worker on the front desk, to the smiling, friendly, helpful doorman, to the amazing staff in the restaurant and bar. I cannot remember all the names but the breakfast team (Blanca, Marcela - and I think Isabella? - sorry if I have your name wrong) was fabulous, and made such an incredible start to each of our days. (And Marcela, we now always refer to our morning coffee as 'tinto'!) In the restaurant, the highly knowledgable and entertaining Ernesto helped us with wine choices in the evenings, and impressed us straight away by talking about what shape of glass we should have for our sparkling wine ... a sommelier who knows about glassware and doesn't just dump sparkling wine automatically into a flute (quite the most horrible drinking vessel for sparkling wine). And Yolande in the bar, who was a delight. Thank you to all of you. This is a team that any hotel would be super-proud to have. There were a few bumps along the way. Notably, our turn-down was missed on the first night. And there is a large weed growing on the terrace of the upstairs lounge. I will check that it has been removed on our next visit.

Overpriced experience. The uniqueness of the “grapping” that the design of Gehry gives to the property does not compensate for a cold and simple interior, starting with a simple lobby and followed with basic small rooms. Positive: included the visit of the winery with a wine tasting.

Dear JosFerHer, Thank you very much for being our guest and for taking the time to post a comment. My apologies that we did not met your expectations. I just wanted to share with you that not only the building was designed by Frank Gehry but also the entire interior of the hotel, he chose the furniture, designed lamps and parts of furniture etc. Frank Gehry chose a minimalistic approach, as he did not want any distraction from the protagonist, the building, and its symbiosis with nature. Thank you again and a very happy holiday season to you and your family. Best regards Stefan F. & team

Despite a unique location and stunning architecture the service is far from adequate and the hotel staff clearly lack training. To explain with examples of rude staff: 1) At breakfast - we had to wait for a table (which was fine) but when we asked if we could have a tea while we waited the waitress responded abruptly and rudely (in Spanish) “well you can just stand”. We confronted her to explain we don’t expect that type of rude response and she only tried to argue with us. This type of attitude is typically seen in Spain but not something one should experience in hotel that charges 500/night. Just FYI - the breakfast is nothing special and definitely not 5 star (!). Very simple and of 3 star quality. 2) After spending the morning walking in the town we returned to our room at 1330 only to find that it had not been cleaned (!). When we called reception to explain - rather than apologising to us - he rudely said “well our cleaning hours are from 10am to 4pm”. That is not the type of response any client should receive. Clients do not need to be told what the cleaning hours of the hotel are - instead it’s the other way around - the hotel needs to make sure all rooms are cleaned promptly and if they are delayed they need to apologise for it - not be rude. What makes it even worse is that we were there for our friends wedding - so you would think they would have made the effort to be more friendly. Other guests who were at the wedding with us have also complained about similarly bad treatment. The staff clearly have zero training (most of them I predict are hired locally). Also given the brand/image of Marques de Riscal the staff feel they are doing you a favour by serving you (and certainly forget the reason they have their salaries is thanks to the guests staying there). I hope this reaches the manager of the hotel because no customers should be treated this poorly. In summary - a stunning location and beautiful setting but close your eyes to the staff at reception and the militant Spanish attitude at breakfast and you will be ok.

Dear AlexisdV8170CF, Thank you very much for your feed back and my apologies for the inconvenience caused during your stay with us. I am very sorry for the incident during the breakfast and I will certainly discuss this with the team. I know all of them very well and most of the employees are with us since day one - they are lovely and caring people and in a very positive way very proud to work with us. The breakfast itself has been created by Francis Paniego, who has a total of 3 Michelin stars between our and his restaurant in Ezcaray. My apologies that you did not enjoy it - we are getting a lot of compliments as the idea of the breakfast tasting menu is to have everything your would find a buffet to be served at your table. Most guests find this to be more luxury. In regards to the cleaning of your room, I have already spoken to Daniel, our Front Office Manager - who was your point of contact and who spoke to you on several occasions . He said that when you asked him in the morning when the rooms are going to be cleaned, he informed you that the time is between 10.00 am and 4.00pm and if you wanted immediately service, which you said should be done while you are out. Once more my apologies if there was a misunderstanding about the timing. I am very sorry that we have not met your expectations and I thank you again for reaching out to me. Very best regards Stefan F. General Manager

The hotel is the touristic point of the region, so every time you arrive there is a lot of tourists taking picture in front of the hotel. Our experience was really bad for the beginning until the end. Three weeks before we arrive at the hotel I exchanged emails with the concierge asking her to make a reservation at the restaurant of the hotel, there’s a one Michelin star on the Hotel, for my surprise when I arrived they let me know that the reservation that she confirm wasn’t made on the Michelin star, they made a reservation on the other restaurant of the hotel, where the breakfast is served it, clearly I’ll spend my time and they should advise me that the reservation that they had made wasn’t for real. I booked the Riscal Suite, it is a huge room but there is no balcony and the decoration is really really tacky, clearly it needs restoration soon, the floor and the furniture are really old, The amenities that they serve on the room is a very poor quality chocolate. to finish my journey on this hotel I visit the winery, the visit was OK nothing special compared to other wineries and I bought several bottles of wine on the store, they promised that they would delivery all to my room, of course they forgot. If wasn’t for my wife we had leave the hotel without the bottles and it would causes a mess to get therefound by phone, probably we had to come back to the hotel to get those bottles. Another thing is the bikes on the hotel, the winery hotels on Tuscany and Bordoaux have electric bikes, that helps a lot do you have a pleasant ride, the bikes of the hotel are those bikes they made on the 80s. That’s all.

Dear Almachad,, Thank you very much for being our guest and for taking the time to post a detailed review of your stay. I am very sorry to read that you did not enjoy your stay. My apologies for the misunderstanding with your restaurant reservation, I will certainly look into it, and I am surprised that your written confirmation did not point out the name of the restaurant. As to the tourists, the tours are reduced at the moment and many of the guided visits of the winery, are guests of the hotel like yourself, who also take pictures of the unique building. In regards to your suite, there are also suites available with large terrace or rooms with balconies, but it is possible that when you made your reservation none of those were available, considering that we are in super high season at the moment. The interior design is, just like the building, by Frank Gehry, the rooms have been recently renovated, but the design and the style cannot be changed of course, as everything has to be kept as Frank Gehry intended it to be. The rooms and interior design of the hotel are meant to be minimalistic, in order not to distract of the architecture of the building and the symbiosis of the building with the surrounding nature. The bicycles are less than two years old and we choose a "retro" design, which we felt is more "romantic" and we have received a lot of positive feedback about them - also we opted against eBikes as we feel there is a safety issue for the unexperienced user. Once more my apologies for the inconvenience caused during your stay and I hope that this has not marred your memories of your trip. Thank you and best regards from Elciego Stefan F. General Manager
