The Windermere Estate is an 18 room plantation retreat surrounded by the cardamom, coffee and tea hills of Munnar. Established as an estate in the 1940s, Windermere recreates the essence of an estate home devoid of a hotel atmosphere with a unique blend of simplicity and luxury wrapped in old world charm. Consciously remaining small and exclusive we invite you to experience heartfelt plantation hospitality, delivered seamlessly and unobtrusively.
A gorgeously small hotel set amongst a cardamon plantation surrounded by tea estates. The estate has some wonderful views albeit they were frequently shrouded in mist whilst we were there. Our room was delightful - spacious, well furnished and very comfortable with a great balcony to sit out and read on. Food was a real highlight here. Whilst lunch and dinner aren't part of the daily rate, due to the location its inevitable that you will eat here. The food does not disappoint - all local with a focus on flavour not heat. It was a set menu which changed each meal time. Delicious food. The staff were great - super friendly and welcoming and their inhouse naturalist was a delight to talk to - he led us on a walk through the cardamon plantation pointing out birds, giant squirrels and wild and plant life. He also led us on tea tasting experience which was really interesting - despite the number of tea factories and plantations I have previously visited - this was the first time I had experienced a tasting understanding and appreciating the distinctions between the different picking processes.…

Beautiful, quaint hotel in the Hills of Kerala. Wonderful, helpful staff. Considerate and kind. Great early morning bird walk with the in-house naturalist. Lovely room with a great view across the mountains. So there's no surprises, they don't have an alcohol license and dinner is a set menu. That didn't have a negative impact however - you just have to go with the flow.

Windermere is the perfect balance between a hotel and home experience. The view is insane, we got a free upgrade to a valley view room. The hotel has a very warm welcome, and feels like your walking into your own farm house. We were received by John the owner of the hotel, who kept us well informed and well attended throughout the stay. The meals were traditional kerela meals for lunch, and north Indian for dinner, like home : there was no ala-carte, it was a chefs choice lunch and dinner, but they were more than happy to accommodate dietary restrictions and any special preferences. Ancel their naturalist took us on stunning close to nature walks which were also very informative. He also hosted a very informative and interactive tea tasting session which was amazing. The rooms and bathrooms were huge, and very decent to look at, and had whatever we needed. The sheets and duvets were super clean and well kept. There is a massive games and reading room for activities. There is a tea stall where they organise tea and coffee with local snacks complimentary for all guests in the evening. We would highly recommend windermere estate to whoever who wants a warm homely hotel experience.…

A magical place, so quiet, so pure…a haven of peace in the hills. Many thanks to Menon for his warm welcome and Ancil whose knowledge of the nature around is second to none. Very tasty cuisine as well. An unforgettable stay.

Stayed in this place with one of our family friends from Italy. We loved this place. Fantastic location to relax and rest. The rooms are really beautiful, clean, large and reminds of colonial times design and structure. Food was excellent too though very limited menu. Could have added some more choices like steaks or some other dishes. That’s the only lack we felt there but the dinner was superb with a live barbecue and other dishes.

The beautiful cardamom and coffee estate that 18-room Windermere sits on is worth the stay. Nature walks (more of a trek) and guided bird watching with the extremely knowledge Ansel is part of the reservation, as is breakfast and tea/coffee in the afternoon. There's no TV or bar on the property but there's so much other stuff going on that you don't miss them. The meals change everyday and are served like a bed and breakfast with a couple of veg and nonveg options eaten family style. We liked everything we ate at the restaurant. We were also able to purchase cardamom and coffee grown on the estate at the reception. The staff are warm and friendly. The minifridges in both rooms did not work but hopefully that will be fixed the next time we visit. One request I would make to the Windermere cleaning staff is to please pay attention to cleaning the spray nozzle of the bidet. It was coated in mildew in most public bathrooms in Kerala, including Windermere, but homes seem to be able to keep them clean so I know it's not impossible. I look forward to bringing my parents and family to stay at Windermere in the future.…

The calm and gentle way of life was a real contrast from the city I had travelled from and this took a little while to get used to but once I did it was the perfect place to spend a few days. The tea plantations are close by and a trip to the highest organic tea plantation in the world is a must-do trip; one of the highlights of my holiday. The rooms at the Windermere Estate are large, clean and very comfortable. There is a private seating area outside each room where you can wile away a few hours and watch the sun rise or set depending upon your preference. The staff at the Windermere Estate are wonderful and their main focus is to ensure that each and every guest has the perfect stay. Complimentary tea and snacks are served from the cafe in the grounds. The snacks are delicious and not to be missed. The evening meal is an absolute feast. There is no menu as the chef will choose the freshest produce on offer that day. I loved anticipating what might that might be. Every meal was a gastronomic delight. I loved staying at the Windermere Estate. We arrived towards the end of a month’s holiday and our wind-down certainly began in style. …

Rooms were large if fairly basic. Lovely terrace to sit out on. Small pool area with a couple of loungers. Great base for treks and exploring the tea plantations. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a tour of the local cardamom estate offered free every day at 4pm. Only 1.5 to 2 hours but well worth it, Ansil the guide was very knowledgeable. They also had a tea tasting on one of the days we were there. It was very interesting and worth popping along to. Free chai or coffee and local snacks were served in the Tea hut each day from 3:30pm, delicious. There is no alcohol at all served on the premise, although you can buy alcohol and drink it in your room if you want. The evening meal is set with no choices and different each day. They are very helpful in providing alternatives if you don't like certain things, just tell them in advance. All the food was very tasty and we really enjoyed the meals on both evenings we were there. You don't know how much the meal is until you check out, at the time of writing ours cost around 1200 rupees (£12) per person for a 3 course meal.…
