At the end of an alleyway in the bustling village of Shahpura, the doorman opens a large gate. We enter the beautiful property of the princely family. At the end of a wide alley the guest house consists of a large pavilion plus an accessory building in traditional style. Charming welcome by a member of the family, one feels at home. The rooms, huge, overlook the park. Ancient and comfortable furniture; the bathroom, very large and well-equipped, overlooks the park through curtains. The calm is perfect, and will only be disturbed by the flounders of weddings around. Dinner is served in the dining room of the main building, occupied by the owners. The owner was present, the conversation was brilliant and instructive. Excellent Indian menu. The house offers a boat ride on the nearby lake and its countless birds, and an excursion to the villages dependent on the estate, where a family foundation finances schools with a modern and good curriculum (we were able to check). In short: a discovery of rural India in conditions of great comfort and charm.

We absolutely loved staying here on our trip around Rajasthan. It was a blessed relief from the hurly burly of cities( albeit they were amazing) and the typical 5 star hotels around them( lovely as they are) The tranquility, lovely pool, fantastic food ( no issues for us ) and lovely staff were first class but the outstanding point here were the family who own this magical place They made us so welcome and were so engaging that we felt as if we were honoured guests rather than hotel residents . Sadly our trip was marred by the loss of my mother in law during our first night and our whole trip was thrown into sadness and a hasty return home. The family were superb in rallying round in appropriate sympathy and very practical help for which we will always be grateful If I had one recommendation for improvement it would be to make the dining room a little less formal and quiet ...but maybe that is part of its difference.

This hotel has much to be positive about. It is a beautiful heritage property in its own grounds on the edge of a rural village; it's perfectly located between Jaipur and Udaipur; the family support the local community though education and employment and grow most of their own produce. As a group of 4, we had adjoining well-appointed rooms in a separate building with its own courtyard close to the beautiful pool area. Service by the pool was discreet; evening drinks and snacks were served there before dinner. During the day one of the owners, obviously a hugely respected member of the community, took us the school supported by the family. On this basis, it should have more stars. However, there were some issues that left a less favourable impression. After our first dinner, one of us was violently sick all night and after the second, another was also unwell. (Interesting that another reviewer had a similar experience around the same time.) Having had a wonderful visit to the school and handed over a parcel of supplies, we then donated to the charity and enquired about the potential sponsorship of a child. The response was unfortunate - no graciousness or gratitude. (Cash counted in front of us and very keen to give bank details). In addition, having seen the amazing standard of work (and English) being taught in the school, it was surprising to hear that a child would be incapable of writing letters to a sponsor! Although relaxing, we left with an unfortunate after-taste.

A fantastic rural retreat for a few days - away from the assault on the senses that the cities can give you. We stayed in one of the two 'villas' on site which was very comfortable and had two showers (one outside in a private courtyard) as well a as a bath. The food was absolutely fantastic and a great example of the flavours of the area - we felt part of the family from the moment we arrived with our hosts always willing to stop and chat with stories of their history and the local area - take a trip to the family owned fort ruins - its a great early evening visit to see the sun set over the Rajasthan plains.

Room Tip: This is a small hotel - no more than a dozen rooms - but one of the 2 villa suites are recommended.
