My girlfriend and I arrived at La Rana de Arenal in a bit of a desperate spot. We had landed in Liberia late (thank you very much Canadian weather) and the rental car arrangement had taken longer than expected. We wanted to drive from Liberia to La Fortuna before nightfall and find a nice hotel close to the volcano. Should...

The hotel that doesn't want to be found but needs to be visited. Beautiful garden with a lot of birds, nice rooms including protection on the windows against bugs. Warm showers and WiFi. The owner doesn't use the Internet much so I'd recommend either calling or just showing up. It's not difficult to find, lots of signs on the road...

We arrived fairly late in the day without a reservation, La Rana was a gem. The views from the restaurant balcony, overlooking the garden were amazing, what beautiful grounds. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and the food was fantastic, as was breakfast. Rooms were a little rustic but very clean. We enjoyed our stay here.

Excellent service and location, the lawn well taken care of, Ranald the owner did a great job at hosting us, clean rooms, and the breakfast was complete and delicious. Since we live in Costa Rica we have experienced different places with low price stay, and this is a great place to spend a night or two. When having breakfast you...

We showed up at La Rana without a reservation and needing a place to stop for the night. No problems. And the price was right - $45 USD per night! Nice little hotel with 8 rooms (I think) on fantastic grounds. We spent some time walking the property both the night we arrived and the following morning, watching birds as...

Nestled at the shores of Lake Arenal, ideally located halfway between Canas and Fortuna, about 20 minutes north of Tilaran colorful posters point out a real steal of a hotel. It is the perfect compromise between big, pricey hotels typical for the area and small B&B's which offer few amenities. Here you can have your Wiener Schnitzel and watch colorful...

Day 4 of our trip was turning out to be LONG! We had booked a White Water Rafting trip that was supposed to have been from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Reality was 9:30 a.m. (by the time the tour guide showed up) to about 4:30 p.m. No one had told us of the 1+ hour trip by bus each...
