I recently tried to book some accommodation through Grandpapa lodge (to stay at Alice Pension) and initially had very good and responsive contact from Kohei in making the booking and facilitating the booking including providing my credit card details 'securely'. Two days after I made the booking, my credit card details had been used for a fraudulent purchase and was... More

We stayed here just before Christmas and it was great! Great location, an amazing onsen a few steps away, staff are excellent and the common room with open fireplace is very cute! Very good value for money and were very helpful with picking us up and arranging our lift passes. Room could use some new doona covers but that is... More

Location: 5 min walk from hirafu intersection (which is another 6-7 min walk to ski lifts), although on first/last day the owners will pick up/drop off from within the village. Village has free shuttle to ski lifts (nearest stop around 2min walk). Pros: Breakfast is fantastic. Owners are very nice. Generally a quiet crowd. Relatively cheap and accessible Cons: squeaky... I agree with the other reviewers that the owners are extremely helpful: punctual when picking us up from the bus area, recommending a ski rental place, and getting our ski passes for us. The breakfast was also delicious every morning. However, it is definitely a place for backpackers and younger adults- there were some bugs in our room (ladybugs and... More

Good for students, young adults and backbackers. The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful, shuttling us to the ski slopes and recommending a good (and cheaper) ski shop. As we arrived at 7pm in winter, the hosts even prepared some noodles for us so that we can rest immediately if we wanted to. We were lucky to be upgraded to... More

Enjoyed our short stay at Grandpapa. I love the cozy and quaint feel of this Pension. It is old but very clean and maintained. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We alighted on a wrong Train station instead of Kutchan we went to Hirafu, they gladly pick us up there. Upon arriving cookies and some chocolates are offered. The... More

Only stayed one night here. The manager was friendly and had good English. The room was basic with stained carpet and the whole place looked dreary and old and a little dirty. It would be ok for a couple of nights but I think any longer and you would be ready to get out. It was full when we were... More

We cam back to Grandpapa again after 2013 Xmas. It was still good in value and not much changed from last yr, a new restaurant is opened opposite. The only cons would be we cannot booked the room with private toilet. Or you may care about easy to hear people stepping at the stairs as it was built with wood,... More

Our family stayed at the Grandpapa for 6 nights, from December 20-16th, we are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children ages 10 and 6.) I have seen the Grandpapa labeled as a "Pension" and we have stayed at a few pensions in the past and I would consider the Grandpapa a pension, it is more of a... More
