Extremely friendly and helpful hosts. The father (been in the area for 32 years) even drove us to the neighbouring town when we'd missed the bus outside. They gave us some good advice regarding the area and generally seemed like gentle souls. The place itself is of older decoration and slightly run down, however doesn't matter as you spend most...

This is a small hotel in Kawayu Onsen. The hotel is just next to the bus stop, and specially, next to the public onsen in the river. The location is so convenient if traveling by bus. The hotel also has a family indoor onsen bathroom. Each bedroom just faces the river. So, the scenic view is just spectacular. The food...

Last year we stayed at Yunomine Onsen and have discovered this magic place. This chalet is ran by father and son. They both speak English which is a big plus for foreigners. Most important of all is the mix of Japanese and European style which is essential for us who haven't totally immersed into Japanese style. We appreciate the western...

Ashitinomori came as a lovely surprise. I had booked the hotel thinking it is in Kii Tanabe city, but it is in reality a two hour beautiful bus ride on a winding thickly forested valley road. The pension is by the river with multiple hot springs just across the road. The owners of the hotel could not have been more...

Our stay here was fantastic! Loved, loved, loved it. First of all the location is beautiful. The rooms were surprisingly spacious. I thought from the pics they would be pretty small. There are 6 rooms in all. If you have not done the shared bathroom thing before, no worries. The idea of this was out of my comfort zone, but...

We came to Hongu for the festival and where made really welcome here. The rooms are so clean and comfortable, onsen luxurious and food delicious. The hosts gave us everything we needed for river bathing, travel advice and were so welcoming. This is a very special place. It is also very good value.

Beautiful family run hotel next to the river which has open air free hot springs. The owner are very attentive and kind. He advised us on our trip and made that extra effort to make our stay comfortable (my wife is vegetarian, so he went to buy food just for her!) In the morning, his mother had packed our breakfast...

The hospitality here is unreal. The host picked me up from Kumano Hongu Taishi and later offered to pick up/drop off a few fellow backpackers I met from another hostel to join me for dinner here. Most restaurants in this area will close by 6pm so we really appreciated that. The host's father did not seem too happy about the...

We booked to stay at Ashita-no-mori as we wanted to have access to the Kawayu Onsen Sennin-buro River Bath throughout our 5-day stay and to visit the UNESCO world heritage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in Wakayama Prefecture. We opted for a twin room with breakfast. The room was comfortable with towels, bedroom slippers, toothbrushes, yukata, and a pot of...

I stayed here while hiking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route from Kii-Tanabe to Hongu, then on to Shingu and Nachi. This has hands down been the nicest and most pleasant inn I've stayed at during my hike. The inn is family-owned and was built in a Swiss style by the owner, an elderly gentleman who continues to greet guests at...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Ashitanomori, our most distinctive guesthouse, is located along the Oto River in Kawayu, nationally famous for its unique hot springs. At Ashitanomori, you will enjoy a casual, informal stay in Kawayu in an atmosphere of beautiful and peaceful nature. Here in Kawayu spa, hot mineral waters come up from the riverbed. Right in front of our inn, by the river, you choose a likely spot and dig out a natural “hot tub” along the riverside and wait for it to fill with hot water and your own private outdoor bath. We have all the tools you need to get you started. In summer, you can enjoy both swimming in the river’s cold water and relaxing in open-air hot springs. In winter, a magnificent huge open-air hot spring, called SENNINBURO, is waiting for you. The name is a play on the word for ‘thousand’, a reference to the fact that you could squeeze about 1000 bathers into this open-air tub. ... more   less
