#21 of 37 B&Bs / Inns in Auroville
We run a very simple, yet beautiful guesthouse with dorm beds and private rooms for those people seeking a real experience in Auroville. We have a peculiar community atmosphere and are totally immersed in nature. You can relax in a garden hammock or stay indoors in the comfy sofas of the common hall or cook in the community kitchen or give a hand in our organic vegetable garden. In addition, we are located in the center of Auroville, steps away from Matrimandir and all the main services and activities.

Ok...so let's get things straight here...this is not a Guest House....it's not even a B & B ...you are just getting a room on rent for which you are paying an exhorbitant rent! Rs.2400 plus taxes per day for a less than 100 sq ft area that has two cane cots with a thin matress n sheets that are probably 75 TC, a cane shelf and a table chair with a bathroom that's even tinier....you just thank the cosmos that you are not in some European hostel that doesn't have ensuite bathroom... Now don't get me wrong ...i have lived on shoestring budget and stayed in hostels with communal living but they don't fleece you this way. Now to start with they don't mention these in black n white anywhere in the website or when you are doing the booking. All they do is go ga ga over their rustic eco friendly architecture n sustainably solar heated water. They are desperate to take your money upfront. So once you have paid in advance that's when they provide you the details and you are supposed to bring everything yourself including even a bar of soap. Go buy those handmade fair trade community empowering soaps that cost 500 bucks! I mean I am all for sustainable and responsible tourism but hello don't cheat people when you are already charging a premium. After paying full amount in advance for 8 nights Giovanni says if I am late after office hours which is 4.30 than there's nobody to help me and i need to spend the night somewhere else and there's no refund!!! Why weren't these terms and conditions mentioned before hand? I just make it at the nick of time at 4.30 and hey the reception is already closed. Did i mention that i had to literally drag my suitcase down the dirt track with a week's essentials from the gate to the reception cause hey you are amidst nature in a natural setup. And i had to do that cause m not a begpacker carrying only a torn t shirt n chappals. Sorry if I sound condescending! I peer from the behind and when i say i have reservations the people are lost and get back to their pc to confirm it. I am luckily checked into the room before the people vanish for the night and the following Sunday. Now comes the next part...there is no fooding arrangements within the guest house premises..the community kitchen exists where you cook on on your own. There is not even a jug or tumbler provided in the room! All that is fine but do you carry your own rice and lentils or bread and butter the day you check in ?! The nearest cafeteria Neemtree is about a km away and luckily for me i found company to go n have dinner btw the last order for which is 8.30 p.m. As expected being a tropical place it is infested with mosquitoes lizards n creepy crawlies but these ppl don't provide any insect repellent. After spending two sleepless nights i requested for a net which they grudgingly gave. Coming back to the kitchen there is not a single cup or saucer that is not broken or cracked..old rusty kadhais n no microwave or electric kettles. The old fashioned gas burners are placed on a rickety stand that is not stable and the deep fridge in side the refrigerator are sealed. They have a backboard with a restricted menu for which apparently you have to order a day in advance! They have a separate kitchen and better crockery for the office staff inside the so called 'library'. There is no service no housekeeping. Wifi is erractic, hot water is unreliable and frequent power cuts the back up for which is only a single room. The staff barely care and if you ask anything either their response is 'i dont know' or ' we can't do anything' It's all very nice to slow down and get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life but if you are expected to live a hermit's life than you shouldn't be charged a fortune for it!

My friend and I arrived at Joy Community at 4.30pm. No one was there to greet us- in fact no one was there to give us a key. Unknown to us- the office staff leave at 4pm.. even though it says 5pm on the office door. We phoned 3 times and left a message , but no come back. The following day no apology was given that we had no where to stay... luckily we are older experienced travellers- someone younger alone might ave been distressed at not being able to access a prepaid room!. Breakfast had to be preordered the day before. No yoga etc as out of season- wish they’d told me. Very badly run and extremely unhelpful who should have leaves!

The location is a quaint place hidden admist Auroville, close to the kindergarten. Expect for 4 stars for the staff, the whole place has an amazing ambience. The rooms and dorms were really out of the box. The dorms are made in a unique manner. The beds have the perfectly required net to save yourself from mosquito bites in night. A must visit for all budget travelers PS: please book in advance
