Hotel's Favourite
We stayed for 2 nights in January in the middle of a whirlwind tour of the Kii Peninsula that consisted of visits to Ise Jingu Grand Shrine as well as several key sites along the Kumano Kodo trail, and wanted some downtime during the tour. Amanemu fit the bill nicely - we appreciated the peace, tranquility, massive suite, warm and attentive service, good food and relaxing onsen bath, which all added to a memorable experience in our 15th different Aman property that we've stayed at. Booking through our Virtuoso agent entitled us to a room upgrade if available, and thankfully for us, we were upgraded from a Nagi Suite to the Sora Villa. It's a massive upgrade; the former has about 100 square meters of total living space, whereas the Sora Villa almost triples that size and boasts a huge in-room Onsen (hot springs) bathing facility. The Villas are typically sold as 2 bedroom units, but when there is low availability or guests are upgraded from "lesser" rooms, they block off access to one of the bedrooms, but really, at 296m² for just the two of us, there was absolutely nothing to complain about! It's a stand-alone unit (the Suites are duplex types) with all the privacy benefits that come with it, has two toilets, a his & her shower area and a gigantic yard and terrace with day beds. The only drawback was the views from the Sora Villa are inferior to the Nagi Suite (and Nagi Villa); there's less of the Ocean views in "Sora" designated rooms. But given that panoramic views can be enjoyed in the numerous common areas of the property, we were more than happy to accept that tradeoff. The resort is huge, so guests are shuttled around by Aman staffers in (extended) golf carts. Unlike Amanpulo, however, you are not allocated a cart to drive on your own, which we actually liked, since we've seen guests zip around in dangerous speeds and can definitely endanger other guests at times. Unlike at a traditional ryokan, meals are not included, and guests can opt for a variety of meal choices. The main restaurant serves just about everything that anyone would desire, from full-course Kaiseki offerings to Omakase Sushi courses to a-la cart dishes (mainly Japanese, but not exclusively so.) It's a plus or a minus, depending on what you're after. On the one hand, Amanemu offers hotel-like flexibility in what you want to dine and when you want it. On the other hand, the room service choices are slightly reduced compared to what's on offer in the restaurant (this is somewhat understandable, given that some of the dishes need to be served fresh and/or hot, and would take too much time for the servings to be delivered to the room.) We were initially hesitant to have dinner in the restaurant due to Omicron, but our fears were quickly put to rest when we were shown how the capacity of the restaurant was reduced in half during the pandemic - the social distancing between different groups of guests was more than sufficient to allay our fears. While the food & beverage experience is often the weakest part of the Aman experience, that's not the case here. We really enjoyed the Kaiseki course which focused on the bountiful and high quality local ingredients from the Ise-Shima that includes Matsusaka Beef, Ise-ebi Spiny Lobster and Abalone. Everything was prepared to perfection. Unlike typical ryokans, Amanemu also serves lunch in the restaurant, which was much simpler than what is offered for dinner, but more than adequate for some high quality lite bites. There's also tea and snacks that you can enjoy in the adjacent lounge building that later turns into a bar lounge in the evening. While Amanemu is supposedly renowned for its world-class spa (which also contains a wonderful communal Onsen bath), we did not avail ourselves to either of them given we were there during the seventh wave of the pandemic. We'll definitely have to look to return so we can enjoy everything that Amanemu has to offer. One of the unique aspects of many Amans are the variety of privately guided activities on offer, including some that are bespoke in a way that is not possible without booking through Aman. For instance, they have a tour that allows you into parts of Ise Jingu Grand Shrine that typical tourists do not have access to, and you can partake in partake in Sutra and meditation activities as well. Such activities might float the boat for foreign tourists. For us, however, we have our own vehicle, speak the language and can get by on our own just fine. Also, while many of the activities sounds somewhat interesting, nothing really stands out as a "gotta try it!" experience. This partly has to do with the location, and herein lies the dilemma for some travelers - if you're looking to unwind and chill out in the property, Amanemu would work very well. On the other hand, people looking to use Amanemu as a base for exploring top sights, it's a bit far from the signature attractions in the Kii Peninsula such as Kumano Kodo. Keep this in mind before deciding on staying here. For us, Amanemu worked beautifully. The Kii Peninsula takes a looong time to explore given its sheer size (and twisty, mountainous roads), so we were looking to break up the journey and spend a few days to relax. Thanks to the generous upgrade and awesome Aman employees, our stay turned out to be everything we hoped for... and then some.

My wife and I spent a long weekend at Amanemu and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. The booking was simple and efficient, received a follow up call to arrange some room preferences and expected arrival time which was a nice touch. Upon on arrival we were greeted by the GM and her team and the check in and explanation of the property and facilities was excellent. The villa was amazing, and we were settled in within 15min of arrival. We ate 4 meals in the property, all fantastic both in food quality, presentation and service. All amenities within the villa were well thought out and useful. The property grounds were quiet and relaxed with staff just close enough in case you needed anything but distant enough for privacy. We will be returning to the property in spring to experience the pool and beach facilities without a doubt.

The resort is a brilliant place for just relaxing and winding down. We stayed for 5 nights in one of the villa and was truly enjoying our stay. The villa has its own private onsen bath, beautiful view of Ago bay. Special mention to some of the most friendly staff we had, special mention to Derek, an Aussie who we got to know well and drove us around both in the buggy within the resort and Lexus to the hiking area - good recommendation. And also to Shion-san from the restaurant, by our last day there she almost know exactly what we want for breakfast and dinner LOL. Thanks so much for the hospitality and friendliness, we truly enjoyed our stay and hope to come back again in the future.

Everything is just perfect. This is the ideal hotel to unwind. The service is very professional but friendly and very attentive to your needs. The Japanese style rooms are very spacious and offer a breathtaking view on the bay. The lap pool is wonderful and the spa so relaxing. Food is excellent and the Japanese breakfast is exceptional but even the croissants are better than in Paris. The hotel offers wonderful experiences such as meeting an Ama diver and enjoy grilled seafood. You can also visit Mikimoto pearl island, Ise-jingu shrine....or just enjoy the peacefulness of this unique hotel. This is a gem!

The Amanemu was all I had hoped for - well up to Aman standard, quiet, integrated with nature, perfectly clean, and peaceful. I came for the nature, proximity to Ago Bay and the Ise Grand Shrine, Aman aesthetics, and the private onsen. The resort is assimilated with the surrounding national park, very peaceful and with areas that allow you to easily wander and see nature. The Ago Bay itself was relaxing and you can walk to the Sunset Beach (among other places) to enjoy it. The onsen was spectacular, both at the spa and in my room. It was exactly as advertised - the hot spring water flows directly into your own deep room tub, through its own faucet. The spa has a larger onsen (bathing suits are required) that was like a series of wading and sitting pools, set outdoors. The overall room and resort were very very clean. This may be the most clean hotel I have been to, on par with Aman Tokyo. The robes and two types of slippers in the room were local in style and comfortable. The staff was attentive and quick, without being intrusive. Also, the staff was quite detail oriented, to the point of saran-wrapping leftovers I put in the mini-fridge, but knowing not to fold clothes I left out to air. The tour guide the hotel provided for the Ise Jingu tour was informative and fluent in English. She and the driver provided a nice day of shrine touring, shopping in Oharai-machi, and seeing the Ago Bay as well. All in all, it was a relaxing getaway and another great Aman experience.

Below what you would expect from an Aman. Quality of guests is an issue: they get noisy very often, sending and receiving loud voice messages on Wechat all over the place. This turned out to be a problematic place to take a good rest and wind down from life's burdens. Would not return.

We have stayed many Aman resorts and never complained (except the one in China). Aman stands for perfection. It is hard to find fault and it has always been beyond our expectation. Unfortunately, not this time. Never, ever in an Aman resort, you come back from your breakfast, your room was NOT made. Never, ever in an Aman resort, you stand in front of the reception but being totally ignored by the staff as you are invisible.

From the moment we arrive, the staffs have been so nice to us. They sent a Japanese butler who is fluent in Bahasa Indonesia as he had lived in Indonesia for many years, so communication came easier with us. The public areas are well designed and maintained. The restaurant, bar, sunken bar, and pool are really nice. The spa is one of a kind, where it has a huge hot spring pool that we can hangout and relax during the day. We also rent for a private onsen room which is great, and the massage and acupuncture were also great. The pavilion is spacious and well designed (Aman style) with a great view of the bay. Had a great time for a short weekend trip there.

My wife and I stayed at Amanemu for one night as a "recovery period" following a Kumano Kodo trek. The room was beautiful and peaceful. We really enjoyed a spa treatment. The service was outstanding (as you would expect with an Aman). Special thanks to the concierge staff that assisted me with some logistics of our trip, a tour of some shrines, and our onward travel – they went above and beyond for me. Thanks so much for a great, but entirely too short, stay!

After reading a few uncomplimentary reviews , we arrived prepared for the worst but we have been met with nothing but impeccable service, typical of Aman resorts we have visited elsewhere. The moment we arrived, we were met by Takashi-san who took us through all the formalities of check- in and explained in detail all the facilities offered, showing us on a map where everything was. Ambience is that of all Aman resorts , a clean minimalist approach . The grounds are left to nature , but nature in control. Do not expect manicured lawns and trimmed trees typical of Japanese gardens . I loved the trees and shrubs left natural , leading to the sea. How relaxing to listen to the birdsong all day ! Service was faultless and Takashi-san went over and aboard his duties when he agreed to drive our hired car to Toba , 35 km away, to return it for us, but the car hire company wanted us to return it so he couldn’t . But he offered ! A lovely touch was seeing 4 bottles of Aman bottled water in the car when the concierge brought the car to us for our use. Only a couple of tiny suggestions: 1)The menu remains the same every day . Perhaps the restaurant could offer a daily special for some variety for guests staying more than three nights 2)E mail communication was a bit below par. A few e mails from us remained unanswered until a reminder was sent . I must commend the manager Yoshi-san who was most helpful. Once we contacted her, we had prompt replies to our e mails after that We leave Aman with wonderful memories and our faith in your impeccable service fully restored Thank you, Yoshi, Takashi and all the others whose names I can’t remember. You are the best !!!
