I stayed here for several days a couple of years ago, it was exactly what I was looking for. Open the gate in back of the house and you're on the beach leading to the Eastern Beaches of Havana. It isn't the plushest of homes but this 2 bedroom, reasonably priced dwelling was well worth it. Nancy is a wonderful host that always had a coffee ready for me and willing to fulfill whatever my needs were. The house is right around the corner of one of the best pizzas in Cuba at the Piccolo Pizzeria.
Our family of 3 plus another family of 4 shared this house for a week in February. Nancy was very accommodating in finding beds for all the kids and having everything ready to go when we arrived. She was very, very kind and helpful when it came to setting up meals, cleaning the house and even helping us organize a catamaran fishing and snorkelling trip.
The house is a bit rough around the edges, rustic and quaint. The kitchen has a stove and fridge, but not much in the way of cutlery. Although you only have to ask and Nancy will provide. The house is also quite out of the way at the edge of Guanabo. Close to an excellent beach (by Playas del Este standards) but far from the main part of town.
A great way to experience small town Cuba with a lovely family. Just don't expect the Ritz.
Nancy is a friend of a friend who lives nearby. She happened to have room for me when I came to visit and I got the whole house to myself! Comfy bedroom (one of two), lovely shower (shared), living room to get away from the sun, gorgeous garden right on the beach. Nancy welcomed me like family and her staff Magda and Juna made fantastic breakfasts which I could never finish. I felt safe and at home, happy to walk the sandy beach-side streets any time of the day and enjoyed pretending to be a local in very relaxed Guanabo. Bus #400 from near Habana train station gets you there for a peso (Moneda Nacional), taxi $10 (but could probably get it for less) and in Guanabo you can eat comida criollo, pizza or cheese rolls in restaurants, cafes and bars along the High Street.
We booked a room very short notice and having heard the "way of working" in Cuba we travelled to Nancy's the day before our stay commenced to confirm our booking was all in order, which is all was (fortunately we were staying not far from here). Nancy was very understanding of us checking up and was very welcome at all stages.
The whole house was ours; small kitchen, large lounge, bathroom, 2x bedrooms, veranda and garden which drops into the sea.
Bedroom; tired with noisy air con & a slightly mouldy smelling wardrobe - inc. safe. Nothing dirty or offensive. Comfortable bed with clean sheets. Bathroom; very poor water pressure with temperamental water temperatures (better off washing in the outdoor shower) but did the job. Kitchen; not used other than fridge. Equipped but old, tired and warn. Lounge; old decor but less tired than other areas of the house - ample space and stays cool.
Garden; ultimate highlight!!!! Soft grass, sun loungers, covered seating area, large veranda, outdoor shower and a gate that drops your straight into the sea at high tide or onto the beach at low. There are rocks, but these present no issue to anyone capable of managing a set of stairs. The sunsets were stunning from the garden - the rum prevented us seeing a sunrise but with the angles this should have been viewable also...
Nancy; most useful, informing of best routes into town & Havana, easy with meals - never felt any pressure to eat in, which we only did once. She knew we were heading to Club Tropicana and shouted after us once we'd left to check we had our passports as we needed these to book tickets, and also that all males needed to wear long trousers. Small points but could have ruined our night had she not pointed these out. She has a cleaner/cook who was also lovely. Both non intrusive but on hand for anything needed.
Food; Breakfast; included in the price, large and at what ever time suits you. Evening; only ate in once. Was fine but nicer spots in town to eat for the same price or less.
All in all I would certainly recommend Nancy's based on location and non intrusive host IF you are not looking for luxury accommodation. If this is what you are after, you shouldn't be looking at Guanabo at all....
