Sheywe is a mixed bag of sorts..on the one hand it's near the cbd,has different types of rooms,ie self catering and normal hotel rooms, dstv, wifi, friendly staff etc...all this gets overwhelmed by nuances like the musty smell when you just want to watch TV...what's with that smell?....like really old, antique furniture smell coupled with years of sweat by guests that have visited the establishment ,and the utensils you ask?I get it,we found them clean and we're supposed to leave them clean but how about during low season, take out the pots and pands and scrub off the soot and gunk accumulated over time...and the carpets,no nooooo.....yes theres a cleaner but just one who has to go through all those rooms and tidy up...how about a vacuum sheywe...once a month maybe?apart from that...well like I said....decent.

Spent three night there, Good locations just 10 minutes from the center of town. Rooms basic but clean and comfortable. Staff friendly. Good food. A bit of renovation may be in order, but very reasonably priced and safe.

We have enjoyed our stay in past years. However, this time was terrible! For $50 US we were given a room with a unspeakable bed. Somehow it was very hard with a sag in the middle. There was a party outside our room that went almost to midnight. The drain for the cold shower was a hole in the floor.

Compared to other older hotels in Kakamega, Sheywe has tried to maintain some level of cleanliness. However, the facility is in needs of serious renovation. Regardless I recommend it the place to anyone who needs a clean place to put up.

The pictures don't make justice of how good this place really is. Prime location nearby a Nakumat supermarket, and 10m walk to Kakamega city centre Rooms are very good and large. I stayed in Deluxe room and it was great view of the hotel and surroundings.

We were suppose to stay at the Golf Hotel but some how ended up here. We got there late at night and booked a hut. We travelled in from the Uk so we were exhausted. The ladies at reception were very helpful managed to show us to our rooms really quick. They were lovely and clean and had mosquito nets over the beds. We ended up going to the bar at the night time and the people were so friendly the workers they all spoke good English and welcomed us with open arms. When we woke we could see our full surroundings and it was lovely, actually we never got bitten once while there either. We booked 3 nights there in the end. This is not a place that white people can wander out of by no means. There is a security gate and the person was brilliant in advising us not to proceed past the gates but this is due to the community outside the gates. It is a dangerous place to venture out of, Fortunately we were attending a wedding and we were collected and returned and looked after, I would say this is the kind of place that you go to if you have friends in the area. We did however venture out with our friends while there and ended up in the Signature club but we had a lot of people around us and were looked after very well. I would recommend this place no problem. The breakfast was lovely too no complaints there.

I stayed three nights here and was most surprised. The bed was comfy, the shower was hot, the security was good and the food was great. Most staff were very nice. The location is great - just down the road from Nakumatt. But this is a basic place - no wi-fi, no tv etc, but if you don't mind that, it's a good place.

We spent one night at Sheywe after an afternoon of hiking in Kakamega Forest. I will agree with a previous post that the furniture was somewhat run down and aged. I also agree that the reception area is not ideally located. We still found this to be a very nice stop as we travelled across Western Kenya. The room was clean and having a significant amount of space in both the guest room and bathroom was a nice treat compared to other "guest house type" accommodations we experienced. Certainly, it is hard to compare this type of guest houses to more high end, Western style resorts, such as Savona, as is the difference in pricing! The staff was wonderful and we had two truly delightful meals here as well. Getting up before the rest of my group one morning, I ventured into the dining room for tea until I was to join the group. The staff was very accommodating and it was one of my more pleasant mornings of reflection in Kenya.

Sheywe has a good location, serene environment with a good slope-view, good proximity to town but a lot has to be done in-relation to the rooms, they are spacious but with very old furniture, no reading table, no Tv, no internet. I was in the building that looks like a school dormitory and honestly it needs touch-up. My room bathroom was scary with electric cables for the instant shower hanging loose. I want to believe I was in the old wing and the new one is better. Management should consider the location of their reception and being the second best hotel in town after golf hotel,(excluding Rondo) management should do better to improve standards.
