Toward the end of our New Zealand Vacation, we spent three nights with Susan and Garth at their Matakana Country Lodge - and barely scratched the surface of the area. How can someone spend just one? In two and a half days we packed in four wineries (an enjoyable tasting at Brick Bay, a long and wonderful chat with Farida...

You are so right about staying more than one night as there is so much to do in Matakana region. It was so nice to see a couple that made the effort to see and do as much as possible , including a rugby game at North Harbour! Going forward will we adjust our guest itineraries as suggested - Puhoi...

Quite a journey up from the main road (at least by UK standards) but worth it. A warm welcome from Garth and Susan plus a wonderfully equipped and spacious lodge awaited us. There is a warm hot tub, though we didn't use it. A novel offering for us was a series of downloaded movies which allowed us to enjoy a...

Thanks for your feedback Alison. Yes the drive up to the Lodge is quite something - not everyone likes driving on a gravel road but that is part of living in the country. The night sky on a clear evening still that takes our breath away after 4 years of living here - no light pollution so the milky way...

We arrived in the rain and felt warmly greeted, with umbrellas waiting. Pre-dinner drinks and introductions were enjoyable and wonderfully hosted. A great opportunity to meet new people and yet relaxing. We stayed in the Chardonnay Room, our room of choice, with a little run along the patio we could quickly slip into the outdoor spa. With the rain pounding...

Garth obviously did a fine job of hosting you in my absence - not that I ever doubted he wouldn't. We are both very passionate about the region we live in and love to suggest places we think guests would enjoy. Matakana and the surrounding area is a hidden gem. You really need a few days to take in all...

What a fantastic weekend. We especially loved the happy hour, nibbles and wine. On the first evening we were introduced to the other guests and had a lovely time, conversation and humour. Next morning, full Kiwi breakfast, followed by Susan taking us on a tour of the locale,in her own car, complete with local knowledge and again great humour. Time...

Thanks for taking the time out to write a review. We too enjoyed your company and our in depth discussions about life in general. Thanks also for the suggestions you gave us on marketing the lodge and ideas to enhance the look and feel. We love it when people feel comfortable enough to share their ideas. I enjoyed playing tour...

The Matakana Country Lodge is situated high in the Matakana Area Hills with a lovely view of the surrounding area. We arrived late in the afternoon after making our way through a few of the local vineyards. The Room itself was lovely, to be honest I really could not fault it. The bathroom was massive and had a lovely bath...

We have hosted hundreds of breakfasts between October 2012 when you stayed and today, that I cannot recall the discussion you mention in your review. We consider ourselves professionals in the accommodation industry who have the fortune to meet a large cross section of people and cultures. Interactive discussion is an enjoyable content in our day although we/you may not...

With a group of friends we took over the whole place. What a great place for a getaway. Thought we were on the wrong road, but there it was at the end with amazing views over the valley below. Well appointed rooms and welcoming hosts. Close to all the Matakana attractions. Generous hot tub for solving the world's problems. Highly...

You are not the only one who wonders where the heck they are going. Not only are we at the end of a gravel no exit road but then you follow a long driveway up to the top of the ridge. You have to admit though it's worth the drive when you reach your destination. When purchasing the Lodge we...

My husband and I stayed for one night I wish we could have stayed longer. Garth and Susan put on 'happy hour' where we had wine and cheese and met the other guests. "Happy Hour" is something pretty special at the Lodge. It gives the guests a chance to get to know one another so when meeting in the public areas you feel more at ease. We are glad you enjoyed your stay overall and apologise about the lack of hot water - this is very unusual. Because you have bought this to...

Stayed here mid January and I must say the peace during the summers night is to die for. The nicest husband and wife duo you could ever meet in the industry. Having the Lodge to yourself is a real treat. To be able to kick back on the terrace and enjoy the views and sound of the birds knowing no one else is going to disturb you is pretty special. We can't always guarantee this is going to be the case, you got lucky staying on a weekday! We hope you...

What a stunning place to stay. Garth and Susan welcomed us like long lost friends...had great chats with Garth over long, lazy breakfasts. Generous breakfasts and happy hour lots of fun.
