We booked an appartement and we were very positive surprised. The appartment is a small house and very, very clean and modern. Really, big compliments. The service: more then perfect. The appartment is cleaned every day, towels and bed sheets are changed regularly. Also, lovely, friendly people, always with a big smile. Love to come back here. Ow, that swimming pool :-)
We stayed here in an apartment facing the pool for 10 days. We enjoyed the stay.
Only remark is the beds could be more soft.
We had dinner in the winebar/ restaurant once and the dinner was really nice. But we where the only guests that night so did not dine again.
We loved Madeira and Quintas das Vinhas was a nice spot to visit the island.
Just returned from our 1st (definitely not our last) holiday at Quinta das Vinhas, we had a ground floor sea view room which also overlooked the pool, absolutely stunning! Breakfast was very good, fresh bread every day, very good selection of cheeses, meats, fruits etc, rooms were cleaned daily, fresh towels daily, staff very friendly and helpful, cannot wait to return next year.
Calheta is on the sunny south facing side of Madeira some 15 miles from Funchal. Estreito da Calheta is on the hillside away from the sea but with expansive views of it.
This is Vineyard, Banana and old sugar plantation land and so pleasantly rural and away from large hotel complexes. This is walking territory. I would strongly recommend a car though as taxi costs are high and the best mountain / levada walks are next to impossible to get to on public transport.
This Quinta is a fantastic find. Reasonable price, full of history great views, peaceful and with a nice breakfast (unless you stay at the cottages...they are self catering).
The old main building is full of character but has all necessary mod cons. This is where we would have been had the plumbing not needed renovating just as we arrived. Our alternative was a spacious room in another building with better views but much less character. We could have moved after a couple of days but my wife preferred to stay put and enjoy the balcony and it's panoramic views and glorious sunsets.
There are lovely outside sitting areas in the main residence gardens and a small pool (cottages have a separate pool located down the hillside).
My advice would be to book in the main building for both facilities and atmosphere.
Evening meals were a tad overpriced and sadly often a little overcooked but this should not put you off trying for yourself.
I would certainly return to this excellent Quinta
Our third visit to these cottages and as good as ever. Lovely cottages, clean and well equipped. The swimming pools also great after a days walking. Staff friendly and helpful. Bit disappointing that you don’t still get the basic breakfast delivered each morning, particularly as it still says that it is provided on the website. Sat outside the cottage having breakfast with lovely views across to the sea is a great way to start the day,(as is a glass of wine in the evening!)
Breakfast wasn’t a problem though. Each morning I walked up through the vineyard to the little shop opposite the Quinta entrance where you could get everything you needed ie fresh bread, cheese, tomato’s, fruit, salami, yoghurt, orange juice etc. Got to know the proprietor quite well!
