I read from the reviews that this was previously a B&B but we rented it for a week as a holiday let.

We arrived to find water flowing through the light fitting in one of the bathrooms after heavy rain; obviously a leaky roof. Someone did come and prevent any further ingress of water with a temporary repair. Fortunately there was no rain for the rest of the week so the problem didn't recur.

Unfortunately one of my daughters had to move out of one of the ground floor bedrooms due to it being damp. We were told that the "head housekeeper" refutes any damp smell even though we did send in a photo of the mold on the wall. The other ground floor bedroom also smelt damp and was heavily cobwebbed. We were told that this was just an "extra" bedroom.

The house was very spacious, with some very nice rooms, but whilst it advertises that it sleeps 12, there were only 11 dining chairs, 8 kitchen and outside table chairs and 4 pool loungers. So, if you are all planning to eat together without moving chairs between rooms, it is suitable for 8.

On a more positive note, the heated pool was truly excellent - both warm, clean and surrounded by a very nice patio. The gardens and children's play area were also very nice indeed, with the tennis court an added bonus. It was all set in a good country location, a reasonable journey from the coast.

Unfortunately our memories are both good and bad but we believe that the house would benefit from some additional maintenance and care for it to be the same overall standard as the other Devon holiday lets that we have enjoyed.

The Ratherton House a luxury B & B! The owners Kath and Nick are very friendly and offer scones with cream tea on arrival served on the terrace beside the heated pool. The rooms are very spacious and perfect. The "Front Meadow" room is big enough for a family. We loved to be there. The family and the dogs are very friendly. Breakfast is partly made to order and self service for cereals, fresh fruit and drinks. In their winter garden bath towels and blankets are provided for your use.

This is only Kath and Nick's second season running the B and B but you'd think they'd be doing it for years. Everything was perfect from the specialist products in the bathrooms, to the free chilled Evian bottles, the guest fridge, the little details like providing us with crockery and plates for our shop bought lunches, the delicious cream tea on arrival, the play area for children including a trampoline and small zip wire, the 3D TV with DVDs to choose from, the heated swimming pool, the tennis court, the beautiful gardens, the comfy beds, the tranquil location and best of all the hosts. We spent time with Kath and Chris who were most hospitable and could not do enough for us.

We booked all four rooms in the house and I can give you a little insight into every room:

Front Meadow: It is on the first floor and has stunning views of the countryside, back garden and swimming pool. It is one of the largest rooms and can fit 2 adults and 2 children comfortably. It has a bath with a shower in it.

Cottage field: This is next door to Front Meadow and has equally good views of the countryside. It has twin beds but these can be pushed together to make a double bed. It is around the same size as Front Meadow. This has a bath with a shower in it.

Daisyland: This has a double bed in it with views of the front drive and play equipment. It has a special tiled walk-in shower. My daughter loved this and could happily spend half an hour in it! We stayed in this room and it was lovely and cool, especially as it was very hot outside.

Well Meadow: This is a perfect room for people with mobility problems as it is on the ground floor and is situated near the breakfast room and front door. It is a lovely cool room and has a bath with a shower in it.

All the rooms are furnished to a high standard and have high ceilings.

We went to a couple of restaurants recommended by Kath, 'The Rhydon Inn' and 'Life's a Beach' which Kath called and booked for us (another lovely detail). Both these restaurants were good but "Life's a Beach' was amazing! It is especially renowned for its fish dishes.

Ratherton House is located at most half an hour away from Summerleaze, Widemouth and Sandymouth beaches. These beaches are lovely. If you want to try surfing, Kath can book this for you. Our children had a Taster Surf lesson with Freewave Surf Academy and Robin was a great instructor. If your children want to do horse riding, Kath can help book this too.

I would recommend Ratherton House to anyone. All three generations of us, had a fantastic time here. Our two day break here felt like we had been on holiday for a month! Thanks to Kath, Chris and Kitty xxx

My partner and I could not rate Ratherton House more highly. For us our stay was faultless. From the beautifully presented grounds and rooms down to the finer details it was a lovely experience. Breakfast was very much looked forward to each morning with a great choice and superbly cooked breakfast (the pot of tea was divine!). The cream tea included with your stay was a lovely and unexpected touch to our stay. The pool was fab and so warm to swim in with it being heated which was very much appreciated unlike most places which tend to be freezing cold! Stunning peaceful location, with a lovely family running the place it was just perfect for us. (We were on honeymoon with our little girl of 8 months). Nothing was too much trouble and we felt like we were home from home. Oh and I just wanted to add that the beds are the comfiest I have ever slept in and I didn't want to get out..complete luxury and worth every penny of our stay.

We stayed for a couple of days to make a long weekend and had an amazing break.
I can highly recommend this beautiful house with it's lovely gardens, heated swimming pool and very tastefully decorated rooms.
Breakfast was excellent and the cream tea too.
A perfect, relaxing few days with superb hosts.
We were made to feel perfectly at home and nothing was too much trouble.
Thank you so much Kath, Nick, Chris and Kitty for making our stay so lovely.
Wish we were still there.
We would definitely return and we will recommend to all of our friends !!
