We stayed here one night recently before boarding our boat at Le Boat. Very good location, but a hike to town. Stayed in the basement room, which is equipped for handicapped guests (which we are not). It was hot as blazes in the basement room in September with a small fan and no way to open the door (no windows or screens) without tons of mosquitoes and lack of security. Sophie was unwilling to let us move upstairs to 2 vacant rooms, saying this was the room we booked and those two rooms were reserved (no one else checked in). No mention of that when booked. Sophie did let us share her refrigerator for our perishables for Le Boat. Overall, I would not recommend.
The le Grand Bassin in Castelnaudry is a charming old stone house with several rooms. Our room was upstairs facing out at the lake, or port, the Grand Basin. We could see the cathedral across the water from our room and it was a short walk over to the bridge into town. The hostess, Sofie, is very helpful. She has excellent wines for sale, and you should try the red from her parent’s co-op.
You have to unplug lamps to plug in for phones, the table surfaces are mostly used for decoration so you need to move things around yourself. The WiFi was spotty, breakfast was serve yourself but OK. Bathroom was clean, shower OK, hair dryer provided.
Arrived after travelling all day from Paris to shock and horror from owner . We were told "oh no I have no room I have over booked ". Considering we booked 6 months prior and had the emails from Camille confirming this we were extremely annoyed. We had carried our luggage from the railway station to be informed that we could not stay. Camille did ring Hotel du lock to see if they could accommodate the 4 of us. Offered to ring us a cab but did not offer to pay .
Camille did us a huge favour as the Hotel du Lock and the owner Claude were brilliant.
We did not go inside the bnb but from what we saw of the outside it looked a complete mess.
TIPADVISOR LE GRAND BASSIN CASTELNAUDARY
We booked for a bicycle holyday at the Canal du Midi. When we arrived we saw a messy house and kitchen, checked the balcony room.. .and after 10 minutes we decided not to stay and left this B&B:
Poor in all aspects. We were lucky to found, the very same day, a splendid hotel in Carcassonne (La Bastide de St. Martin - Montredon) where we experienced a great value for money stay.
If you are looking for value and comfort you better avoid Le Grand Bassin.
We booked two rooms at this gorgeous bed and breakfast right on the Canal du Midi's Grand Bassin in Castelnaudary. Camille, the owner, was an absolute delight and shared some of her house smoked duck. It was absolutely divine. She accommodated our every need and we really enjoyed having wine and conversation with her and her friend in the living room after dinner. We would definitely stay here again!
