We were a family of 8 and had a lvoely week at Villa Rosalena. Rod the owner was very helpful-especially as the internet was down and he made it a prioirty to get it sorted for us. His recommendations for restraunts and outings were also great.

Bedrooms are stylish and large and even though the weather was very, very hot they stayed cool-and a lovely breeze at night. The little town has some great restaurants and close by is a wonderful gorge with ice pools to walk thorugh and explore.

The pool is probably more suitable with families with children than a group of adults and the kitchen area is quite small as we were a group of 8 but overall a wonderful time was had by all.

How do you start when reviewing Villa Rosalena? Do you extol the virtues of the accomodation or do you start with the great welcome from Rod and Caroline who's main aim seems to be to create a home from home for their guests?

If you are after a short review...we can only suggest GO!...You will be pleased you went to Villa Rosalena!

For more details please read on:

Bagni di lucca is a town that (if you are from the North East of England) would equate to a Rothbury type village. It's a small, working town where you will not find many touristy shops but will find all the amenities required to enjoy a true self catering holiday. Two main supermarkets Conad and COOP, a regular bus service into Lucca, a local train station around 2 km from the Villa will get you into Florence (a change is necessary) in about 2 hours and directly into Lucca in around 25 minutes (trains from Lucca in Bagni run until about 10.00pm at night at the moment).
Try the coffee and pastries opposite Bar Italia in the morning for a caffeine fix or simply if people watching is your thing! There are plenty of mountain villages to visit (each one has it's own character) and try the Spa at Terme for a massage at reasonable prices.
There are plenty of restaurants in Bagni. We sampled quite a few... but get Rod and Caroline's advice for directions and names as we all had our favourites and they have obviously gained a better overall view of the choices available by living in the town over the past few years.

OK so that's the area what about the Villa? We hired the top floor of the Villa equating to 4 bedrooms and were surprised to know that Rod and Caroline had only recently offered this facility, in the past only offering bed and breakfast accommodation. The building of an ample sized, well provided for, kitchenette means that the self catering experience can be enjoyed

In short, everything is there that the traveller can think of, from a comfy loggia with soft seating and outside table (we never used the inside dining room ourselves) to a lounge area with SKY television (you can get English language for those of us less up to speed with the Italian language very easily), Wii, DVD's books etc.
The small decking area was fine for us to lie out in the baking heat (although the area is hilly, the sun hits the terrace from 9.30 to 5.30 at the moment and reached an abnormally high 42C in our first week) and a small plunge pool was welcoming if it got too hot (for those wanting an olympic size experience try Bagni's large public pool...we did'nt,,,but instead enjoyed a simple dip if we needed cooling down). Free Wifi was a big plus as we could check on trainItalias web site whilst lying in the sunshine and plan our next trip into Lucca or beyond.
All the rooms were spacious with plenty of cupboard space and all were en-suite. The view from Chocolato (our room) was perfect with whisps of smoke drifting across the valley and town in the early morning, which we saw through green shuttered windows.
We utilised the barbecue area twice and enjoyed the experience but, as many people had mentioned Caroline's cooking in previous reviews we had to sample an evening meal......In short the wow factor was achieved with ease! Tell her what you like and you'll experience a first class taste of Tuscany as well as friendly banter from Rod as he plays "mine host" making a "special" meal a truly family affair.
Rod and Caroline quite simply are the perfect hosts and do their utmost to look after you in this little piece of Tuscan heaven. Although the steps up to the villa are, in truth, not for the faint hearted, Rod was always there to help with cases and the views from the loggia make up for the walk from the road below where we parked our car (a car would be a good suggestion if you want to get up into the more hilly villages or simply explore higher altitudes). Ask for advice and it's there a plenty, but if you are after personal space to relax you are looked after well in a non-intrusive way.

We look forward to retuning in the near future....I'm thinking B and B in the spring..Tuscan breakfasts..Yummm!

We had a truly wonderful stay at Villa Rosalena - and the service, help and kindness we received from Rod and family was second to none. As a family group (7 adults and 17 month old infant) we rented the whole top floor, garden (+BBQ) and pool - and it suited us perfectly. Four en-suite bedrooms and communal rooms (living room, dining room and kitchen) meant the accommodation was the perfect size. We spent many hours on the veranda enjoying the stunning view over the beautiful valley below. The villa was very safe for our toddler grandson and the climb up posed few problems even for me (as I have a disability). There are lovely restaurants (and other amenities) in Bagni di Lucca - and public transport links mean that Lucca and Florence are in easy reach. The pool was just right for us. We had the perfect holiday! Special mention must go to Rod who was extremely helpful to us - even taking us to the supermarket to do our shopping!! He was a wonderful host - approachable and friendly - but only there when you wanted him to be. We had a wonderful time in Bagni di Lucca and would encourage others to visit what is a very engaging part of Tuscany.

A fantastic stay in a charming town in a wonderful house full of charm and good atmosphere. Hospitable and helpful hosts who did everything so that we might feel comfortable and have a good time. It was with sadness we have to leave, but we are looking forward to come back. And we would definitely recommend Villa Toscany Rosalena to everyone. We were a family of ten people, from 2 years and up to 60 +, and the place was great for all of us. Several different common areas we could use both indoors and outdoors. Toys and games for the little kids, and we adults had fun in the pool even if it was not very large. The kitchen was well equipped and gave us the opportunity to create superb dinner dishes. The barbeque space was a cool oasis with trees that umbrella by day and fireflies danced around in the evening which made the atmosphere magical.
The rooms were large and cool, spacious and with enchanting views. Newly renovated delicate baths in every room.

Stayed in Villa Rosalena with friends in June. The rooms were lovely, very clean and spacious and the view from 2 of the bedrooms down the valley were absolutely breathtaking. We spent a lot of our time on the loggia. It was a great place to relax.
The pool was fine but attracted a lot of insects.
Rod the owner was very helpful. He helped us with directions and even came along with paperwork when we expressed an interest in some places to visit. He was really friendly and helpful without being intrusive. I would definitely recommend this villa but it is not suitable for those with mobility issues because there are a lot of steps.
