This is not the place to go to party all night (but we weren't looking for that) it was the PERFECT place to go relax & take in the beauty of Costa Rica you can do as much or as little as you want. The hotel & grounds were well kept they were always cleaning & improving on things like a new wifi antenna going up to improve on complaints about wifi reception but that was not an issue I was on vacation & not looking to be on my cell phone all day. The rooms, pool everything was clean & neat.
Everything is spread out & there is some walking which is nice because you don't feel crowded & who can't use a little exercise after eating all the great food & desserts they do have transportation if you do not want to walk. There was Some small problems with communication but what foreign country is there no problems if you do not speak the language??
the staff was very accommodating and did everything possible to correct any problems no matter how small they even made a special meal one night @ the Buffett when there was nothing my partner really liked and they always made you feel welcome and always had a smile when greeting you. The food was excellent at the buffet plenty of choices and both al a carte restaurants were very good, The Italian food was as good as anyplace I have been in Boston's Italian North End neighborhood.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to get away for a stress free vacation.
The Occidental is in the hills and the beach is walking distance. Lots of stairs but well worth it. The rooms are nice we stayed in one of the premier rooms. It was a spectacular view! The beach was lovely. We did a combo tour with Hugo on the beach. It was 30$ cheaper a person vs booking at the front desk! Same company I guess bc they where the actual company on the beach they could discount. There is one main buffet, two restaurants that required reservations and a snack bar. Two pools one with a swim up bar and close to the beach. This resort is amazingly beautiful and low key. Some resorts pack a big entertainment factor this didn't. Think low key guitar player in the veranda vs Michael Jackson impersonator. Overall beautiful and just what me and my husband needed. Wfi awful and only available in room or right by the lobby desks.
We stayed in Building 21 which has a great ocean view outlook. The building is not too far away from the main areas and we enjoyed the stroll to and from the pool, beach and restaurants. Most of the employees are working hard to make your vacation enjoyable. Confirming what other folks have said this resort is low key with few activities and a quiet night life. We never had a problem finding lounge chairs by the pool and always had a server taking our drink orders. A few shout outs to Stepfany, the receptionist, who was great accommodating the building/room we wanted and to Karen who booked our reservations for the dinner restaurants. David, Louis and Carlos, food servers, were absolutely AMAZING. These gentleman will make your meals the best! The food at the buffet did vary daily and we didn't feel it was boring. The snack bar cheese burgers and chicken wings are the best kept secret for lunch! Larry by the beach is also a no brainer for excursions. He is an expert, reliable and has great pricing. We went on the Mirevalles volcanic day tour and it was packed with sight seeing, horse back riding, geothermal pools, mud bath, lunch, waterfalls and shopping. It was a great day! We will certainly consider going back and found that one full week was a perfect time frame.
My husband and I enjoyed every second at this resort!!! We were greeted with a welcoming smile and genuine kindness every single day through our whole trip. We got to know many of the employees and came to look forward to seeing them each day. We felt as though we were treated like family and with great kindness and respect. We felt very safe with the constant security presence on campus and at the gated entrances. A special thank you to Antonio in the buffet, his energy and attention to detail were very much appreciated. Cesar at the pool bar showed us a fantastic time, introducing us to many new types of tropical beverages! Lorena in the spa gave a very relaxing manicure and massage with great precision. Javier at the front desk in the evening welcomed each and every guest who passed him, knowing their names, their stories, and insuring that they were taken care of. As a married man he gave my husband and I some heartfelt life advice which we welcomed while on our honeymoon. Lastly, Olman, our friend at the lobby bar and premium bar, this man bent over backwards to make sure each moment we spent on campus was of the highest quality and that all of our needs were met in a timely manner. His genuine heart and compassion kept us very comfortable. Beyond these few mentioned were dozens of amazing staff members. We have not one single bad word about any piece of this experience!!!! Pura Vida!!!!
While staying at the resort we had an absolute blast. We met such a wide variety of people making it a trip to remember. Javier at reception is truly an asset to the Occidental Papagayo. The conversations we were able to have with him made it feel as if we were all long time friends instead of people that had just met. Bryan the main lobby bar’s bartender was amazing! Again he would take time to get to know his customers and joke with them instead of treating them like just another number. Harold the shuttle driver was always there to pick us up and cart us around the resort with a smile on his face! There is SO much wildlife on the resort as well. We met Gloria, a raccoon, and her babies on several occasions and saw a wide variety of birds. There are a couple of skunks running around, so beware. On another note there are a LOT of stairs and hills on this resort so that is something to keep in mind when booking. Of course that is why they offer a shuttle service which makes a huge difference if you don’t want to deal with that much walking. Overall we had the best experience imaginable and would definitely return to this resort, even if it is 75 stairs one way from the main pool to the lobby.
