Anita and Ray were the perfect hosts during my two day stay in Mailersta. I'd come as a first time visitor to Shetland, and I was keen to explore Yell and Unst whilst I was here. Their home provided the perfect backdrop of a memorable stay, I couldn't have imagined a more perfect respite.
Their home was spotless, my room and bathroom were exceptionally clean and comfortable.
Anita went out of her way to make me at home, I had a hot pot of tea and plate of biscuits waiting for me when I arrived in the evening. Breakfast was outstanding. It was probably the best cooked breakfast i've tasted anywhere and I've stayed in many places around the world. Fresh eggs from hand reared chickens, and generous portions. There was also cereal, juice and toast if you wanted it. Coupled with that, was the breathtaking view of Unst's landscape as you sat in their conservatory drinking in your surroundings. It was simply magical.
Anita was a fantastic hostess and was very knowledgable about the whole of Shetland being a native there. She gave great recommendations about places to visit whilst you were there.
There aren't any restaurants as such on Unst (there is LJ's diner on Yell which offers very reasonably priced meals) but there are cafes within a couple of grocery stores were you can get a snack and a brew.
Highly recommended place to stay, thank you for all your hospitality. :-)
My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at the Mailersta B&B and we really couldn't have asked for more from our stay. Anita and her husband Ray were wonderful hosts, welcoming us with tea and biscuits when we arrived. I am coeliac and Anita went out of her way to provide for me, getting in gluten free options and keeping them separate so I felt entirely at ease and looked forward to breakfast every morning! The breakfasts were absolutely delicious and truly set us up for a full day of exploring ahead. Our room was cosy, comfortable and wonderfully clean. I would wholeheartedly recommend staying here when you visit beautiful Unst - we'll definitely be back!
My husband and I recently spent four nights at Mailersta B&B on the island of Unst as part of a longer visit to the Shetland Islands. We couldn't have chosen a more beautiful location! Mailersta is a lovely modern bungalow in an elevated position overlooking picturesque Uyeasound. It is only a few miles from the ferry to/from Yell and from the other main attractions on the island. In fact, nowhere is very far away on Unst, and it was very quick and easy to reach all the main sites on the island by car on uncrowded and generally very good roads.
Mailersta has two rooms available for visitors - a double ensuite room and a twin room with private facilities a short distance down the hall. We stayed in the twin room which was very comfortable and quiet, overlooking fields at the rear of the bungalow. The only sounds were the evocative call of a curlew and the occasional snipe proclaiming on a fence post outside our bedroom window - what a treat!
Our hosts Anita and Ray were very friendly and welcoming and provided tea and biscuits as soon as we arrived. They also advised us on where to have dinner and where to find otters and various birds. We very much enjoyed chatting to them about Unst and its wildlife. At our request, Anita also arranged for us to visit the Glansin Glass Studio nearby and also offered to make dinner appointments for us at one of the two restaurants in Unst. However, with Anita's plentiful cooked breakfast inside us, we didn't feel a great need for a cooked evening meal so were satisfied with frequenting the excellent tea room in Haroldswick for a late lunch and/or afternoon tea and snacks. I should mention that breakfast at Mailersta is served in the breakfast room at the front of the bungalow where you can enjoy magnificent views over Uyeasound and the island of Uyea while you tuck into your breakfast. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit salad, yoghourt, a selection of cereals, toast and a good choice of cooked items (which you could specify the day before).
Overall we very much enjoyed our stay at Mailersta and felt very well looked after by Anita and Ray. We would happily stay here again in the future.
As an aside for those interested in Fairisle knitting, Anita is an accomplished knitter of Fairisle jumpers, hats and other items which you can view and buy on request.
When I knew I’d be back on Unst this May, Anita & Raymond’s B&B was my first choice having stayed there before in 2016. I wasn’t to be disappointed, Anita & Raymond we’re very welcoming, the room was spotlessly clean and well-appointed and the Scottish cooked breakfasts are without doubt the best I’ve had on Shetland. Anita also provided plates and cutlery for my ‘self-catered’ salad I’d bought on the way up from Sumburgh. I’ll definitely be back when next in the north.
Cosy clean and comfortable with friendly hosts who were extremely helpful during our stay. Located just 5 minutes from the Belmont ferry terminal with stunning views out to sea from the breakfast room.
