Yes, we had a confirmed reservation. Yes, we were fully charged for it. And Yes, they blamed everyone else that they could for cancelling our confirmed and fully paid for reservation once we got there to check in. We even called from the road at 3pm to let them know we are in transit and would be arriving in a few hours. They looked up the name, confirmed we paid for the 2 rooms and said OK.
Being from a family of flight attendants, and being a well seasoned traveler and being in the hotel development end of real estate, I have a good understanding of the business. One can imagine my outrage when a teenager in a t shirt and bare feet who's flip flops were next to the counter slowly paged through my confirmation printouts over and over while squinting at his computer screen with a bewildered look during check in, then walk away into the attached room off the office to bring out his father to try to explain what is wrong. And with that, the blame games begun. To add further difficulty to the situation, the son was a low talking mumbler and the father had such a thick accent that it was extremely hard to understand either of them.
The manager (user gm.pa253) said Expedia cancelled the reservation. We said it's not a reservation, it's a confirmation. Itinerary Number 13889091271. 2 Nights, 2 Rooms. And the $464.87 was paid for in full back in February. Here is the room confirmation number ba6b880c. Here is the print out. And I called at 3:08pm spoke to your son who told me then and again just now that he saw the confirmation in the system and now four hours later he doesn't? Now you are saying Expedia cancelled it in April? We never used Expedia so stop using them as an excuse. I asked, "did you overbook and now don't have rooms?" Manager: No we have rooms. Just give me a credit card and we put it on there and then you call Expedia to refund you. (Knowing full well that the charge can't be refunded). I said, the room was paid for and confirmed that it was paid for and now you want to charge another $465 for what was already paid for? Is this not Rodeway Inn Dillsburg? Is this not your address? Is this not your phone number? I then underline each and every word on my confirmation sheet from them. "Your Reservation is Confirmed. Itinerary 13889091271. Your booking is guaranteed and has been paid in full." So manager says, ok we charge Expedia card. If charge goes through then no problem and writes down the room costs and starts punching in the charge. As expected, Expedia doesn't authorize it. He then says what is your credit card number and shows us the number he has. It was not the same. Then he says something to his son (not in English) and prints out a page that has my name but someone else's address and says is this your address? 800 Connecticut Ave in Norwalk CT. Is your phone number 212-444-0023? He fully well knew it wasn't. It's as if he quickly printed out the paper to give him something that he could use as an excuse. Now it is getting heated because these tactics that he is trying are just stall tactics. So I return his volley with straight up facts. Manager says ok ok ok. And hands a small postcard style carbon copy form to fill out so that he can give us the room and then he can use that to go to Expedia with that voucher so he can get paid from them. It was like pulling teeth to get to this point. He gave me the Roadway Inn business card to contact their customer service about the matter with Expedia. I step out of the unairconditioned office to call Choice customer service and overhear the manager say to our friend who's room was also part of our confirmation say no no this is just for one room. Rather than go back in and give him a full piece of my mind again, I call and book another hotel 5 miles further away. The door then opened and I was handed the phone from my father who had the event host on the line. He explained that this hotel was dropped from their list and he proceeded to explain why. It was if he was witness to what just happened. Exactly the same thing! I thanked him and said we have a new place already booked. Knowing that we have a place to stay now for both of us, I go back in and tell the manager that this whole charade that he just pulled was not the first time and must be his way of doing business. I said that I will do my best to inform each tourism department head, chamber of commerce committee and area event promoters of their wrong doings. And shall contact Choice hotels to have them remove their branding from this location. Bad business owners such as Rodeway Inn should not be part of the vibrant tourism of the area. From one traveler to another, do yourself a favor, and put this place out of business by spending your money elsewhere. Consider Rodeway Inn as Roadway OUT.
