3.75 out of 5. Look ... this is an older property in Lawton, OK. IF you are comparing it to either NEW Marriott properties and/or larger Marriott properties in more touristy places then ... yes, I guess this is a dive by comparison. But c'mon! That's like comparing your wife to Hollywood bombshells, right? I mean ... it's the SpringHill Suites in Lawton, OK! It has an indoor pool, a pretty decent breakfast, a super-friendly staff, clean rooms, etc. Again, it's an older property and I didn't like that the "two-room" suite didn't have a divider between the "two"; e.g., I wanted to stay up and watch TV, but the "living room" TV is 5 feet from the first "bedroom" bed and less than 10 feet from the second one. But it absolutely served it purpose and I would absolutely stay there again! (For example, I was there a month earlier and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, which is a muuuuuuch newer/nicer property, but ... the SpringHill Suites is closer to more things important to me AND it had a free breakfast [I had to pay an extra $10 for the breakfast at the Hilton], etc.) So, it's about perspective and managing expectations! But IF you think this is going to be a terrible place, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I liked the coffee and breakfast. Otherwise, my experience was poor. If you have no other choice and decide to stay at this hotel, bring Febreze for the smell that you might encounter, bring some slippers to wear inside and don't have any expectations just because it is "Mariott." Be prepared to be treated like a nuisance if you question anything. Personally, I would try to avoid running the A/C or using the pool.
There is a Cracker Barrel right next door.
We had two rooms that were both clearly old and appeared run down - here are my problems with those rooms:
Room 1: Found left-over fast food meal from a previous guest in a paper bag on the window sill on our second day when we opened the curtain.
The sofa in the seating area is a nice size but too hard to sit on it comfortably and very worn.
Everything in the room was dated and looked run-down. Despite the run-down impression, it was cleaner than expected - but with the left-over food I wondered about the cleaning process.
Room 2: Awful smell - musty/wet unpleasant. Windows do not open - I tried to run the air-condition, which was not only super old (older than the model in the room 1), it also had a bad smell coming from it. I used the fan function and opened the door to the hallway - propped open with a chair and tried to air the room out. It did not help much - it was hard to say if the smell was coming from the walls, the carpet, the furniture. The smell did not get better despite fan running and door opening.
Bathroom: Dark, no window, small, no place to put down items to get dressed other than a hook at the door.
Walls: Cracks and paint coming off.
Sofa: Same as Room 1
Clean enough for me - no complaints about the general cleanliness with the room.
I had read some bad reviews after I had booked the rooms - there are certain hotel chains that I book without reading the reviews because I trust that the rooms are ok. That was a mistake - I did ask the staff member who checked us in if it is true that the rooms are old and that I had read some negative reviews on the way there. The employee told me "I would not worry about it" and brushed it right off. I found her almost rude though that is, of course, subjective. She was grimacing when I mentioned the negative reviews and after brushing my concerns right off I did not feel that I could actually complain about the rooms because I had the impression that it would not result in any meaningful conversation or action.
Pool: I did not use the pool - after my impression re rooms I was too worried about hygiene and pool maintenance.
The breakfast and coffee were great and I enjoyed the food and coffee. It was a good variety, a lot of fresh fruit, really good coffee. The staff was very friendly and made sure that everything was refilled promptly. It looked very clean and nicely arranged. Nice seating area.
When you go to SpringHill by Marriott you expect to find a good bed, nice room furniture, a working pool and a healthy breakfast. None of this was found by us during our stay. The uneven bed springs sagged and loudly squeaked when you sat on the side. The room desk chair covering was badly torn, the dirty looking indoor pool was closed, and the breakfast bananas were more black than yellow. At least the A/C worked.
The staff were friendly and helpful. I had no complaints about the hotel itself, just the mattresses and wished the pool stayed open later than 10:00 p.m.. We had 211. I did not know innerspring mattresses were still available. You could feel the edge of the metal frame when getting into bed, and you heard the coils squeak with everyone's turn all night long. It made me think that's why it's called "Spring"Hill Suites. But I will say the water pressure the next morning would take away most of the kinks from my aching joints and back the next morning. Amazing water pressure!
Our family was in town for a basic training graduation at Fort Sill. We stayed 3 nights in three rooms. Armondo, at the front desk, was the friendliest front desk manager I have ever encountered! He helped us switch one room when there was a problem with the window. He recommended several restaurants, answered tons of questions about Lawton, and even had a black sharpie marker available at a moment's notice. He did this with a happy smile on his face, even though he had an entire hotel full of guests to tend... Rooms themselves were super clean, with fresh sheets and towels. The complimentary breakfast was above and beyond typical free breakfast fare. The indoor pool looked very clean, and didn't permeate the whole hotel like a lot of indoor hotel pools... Parking is easy. Shares a parking lot with Cracker Barrel and a run Friday's type restaurant /bar named Mike's... The hotel itself is just a few blocks from the casino, the mall, and right off the highway. It's 7 minutes from Fort Sill Visitors Control Center... Highly recommended for army families visiting Fort Sill. Thanks, Armondo! ...If you've never been to Lawton, it is windy. Always really, ridiculously windy.
