This hotel completely exceeded our expectations. We are two female travelers and spent 2 nights (wish we could have stayed longer!!!) at Z Hotel over NYE 2013. The hotel is spacious, very clean, relaxing, the service is great and there is wifi (doesn't reach all the bedrooms) and hot water. We stayed in the 4-bed female dorm and it was 150 rupees and night!!! There were mosquito nets for the beds, the sheets and room were clean. There is very adorable and chic lounges dispersed throughout the hostel ideal for sipping tea, reading and relaxing. Especially coming from Kolkata where everything was more expensive and much dirtier than this we were EXTREMELY relieved and overly satisfied. ABSOLUTELY stay here! We had to call a few times to make the booking since it wasn't too easy to do online. We had no problem booking a room a few day in advance but you might need to call ahead to book even if you are thinking of passing through Puri!!! You will have to take rickshaws to town - they are very cheap so its not problem. The non-shared rooms are a quite a bit more expensive but would still be worth it in my opinion!

We arrived at this hotel at 5am in the morning without a booking and the man at reception responded to our knock at the gate and let us in. As with most places in Puri the checkout is 9am and we got told there was a room with bathroom available after 9am. There are some great common areas in this place and so we hung out on a couch till the room was ready.

The room was amazing, high ceilings, great bed, mozzie net, large bathroom and optional AC. it was cool enough with the high ceiling and fans and so we didn't use AC and saved some rupees. The common breakfast area was great for meeting other guest and just hanging out. The food was good too. I would just say book, we were lucky and got the last room with en-suite bathroom. however I think the share ones didn't look too bad. There is another review with photos, our room looked exactly the same. Great value, great room.

Make sure you visit the beach at the other end of the town (off the lonely planet map) called Golden beach I think ( I can't remember) we only ended up there because we were booking tours at the OTDC office and it happens to be at this beach. here the beach is cleaner and you can find load of local indian tourists swimming fully clothed and enjoying the water. The beach near the tourist hub is quite dirty and where all the fishing boats come in. If you swim here though prepared to dress conservatively (women i.e. tshirts over swimmers) or risk attracting unwanted attention. we just walked back along the beach to the tourist end.

I recently spent four days at Z Hotel in Puri and it was one of the best places I stayed in India. I loved the old building, with its mis-sized wooden stairs and iron railing and the big outdoor dining porch where I spent most of my time. I had one of the non-renovated rooms and I'm glad I did -- the newly-renovated rooms are nice and big but $50 and a bit charmless. My room was big, clean, with character at only $30 (room 21). The food was great, the staff really pleasant and the location is good. There are also dorm rooms and shared bathrooms but I didn't see those so don't know what they are like.

On entering the gate, you are surprised to find already such a nice well-kept garden. but the whole building is similarly well-maintained.
And the price? Very affordable, usually in India one get rubbish for that price, or one get to pay highly for that quality...
With the hotel is an attached restaurant with a variation of excellent food. And a large TV room. (no TV in the rooms here, means free of noise). Indian nationals not allowed until they have a foreign passport or are accompanied by a foreigner.
The building is old colonial style and totally renovated, with matching furniture.
And you are one street away from the see beach. Setted in a calm and peaceful city part (Chacra-Thirtha road), not the busy Jagannath temple area and not the noisy beech hotel area... Whenever I visit again in this city I'll stay again here, definitively.

This hotel is an oasis of calm, with it's own grounds and set slightly back from the chaos of the main road. Being a solo traveller on a budget, I went for a 500 Rupee room, which had a view, a fan and a decent mosquito net. I had a shared bathroom which was exceptionally clean and large! Recommended
