Staying a night before my relative’s wedding. There is a lovely lounge and bar with a biliardo table, a stove and a smoking room closed to the reception. They have public bath for men and women, you can book Ganbanyoku for 40-50 minutes(you pay extra), the room is pretty big and clean. Breakfast is very good!!
My child was allergic to egg. The hotel prepared eggless bread for her dinner and breakfast. Thanks a lot for going the extra miles!
Room was western style, very spacious room. There was a nice communal bath looking out into lush greenery to stretch out after a long day of sightseeing too. Some board games can be brought back from the coffee lounge to the room to keep you occupied at night.
Location-wise, it was a good 10 min shuttle bus ride from Naka-Karuizawa station. Hotel shuttle was available only from Naka-Karuizawa and at certain fixed timing (reservation required). On our first day, we arrived way ahead of the shuttle timing so we kept our luggage at lockers in the Karuizawa train station while doing some sightseeing. After sightseeing, we took the Shinano line to Naka-Karuizawa for the hotel shuttle. Note that JR pass is not valid for Shinano line.
During check-in, they fixed the shuttle timing for other days of our stay (this can always be changed at the front desk later).
Overall, a quaint and pleasant hotel in a quiet area of Karuizawa. The front desk staff are friendly and literally bend over backwards to serve their guests. The Sala features a unique library full of interesting books on art, history, etc., and an extensive DVD collection of the national treasures of the world. The rooms are pretty average (with a Japanese "unit bath"), but the hotel offers a room set up to accommodate the physically challenged for a reasonable price. The hotel's bath is not a natural hot spring (onsen), but it is large and quite nice; the bar is comfortable and serves well-prepared drinks. We had a mixed experience in the restaurant - sometimes the service and food were great, and at other times disappointing. The Prince shopping mall, restaurants and downtown Karuizawa are minutes away by car.
