Old charm gone wrong

This was a wonderful guesthouse in the past and we have stayed there many times.

The first thing that alerted us that something was amiss, was that it was impossible to get through to the guesthouse on the phone. So I had to book through Booking.com to make a reservation.

It turns out that the guesthouse does not have staff after 17:00 and at 18:00 o’clock our family friend came to visit us and called the intercom as he had left his phone at home. The owner of the guesthouse, who lives on the property, began to swear and threaten our guest with police because he was trespassing on his territory and this was interfering with his evening plans.

Then he very roughly and rudely kicked out our friend onto the street and walked to our room where my wife was by herself and started screaming at her that he will open a police case. This was really frightening for all of us as we were the only guests at the guesthouse at the time and we were not warned that we couldn't have a family friend come visit to say hello when we're passing through town.

We packed our bags up immediately and left as we were too scared to stay at the guest house since it was only us and the owner on the property. We had to drive and look for new accommodation so we felt safe, there was space at the Protea Mariott where we knew no one would be screaming at us at 7pm in the evening.

Really unfortunate as this used to be a lovely place to stop over but will stick to the main hotels from now on.

Response from Kimberley M, Guest Relations Manager at Kimberley Manor Guest House

Greetings Nadezhda & Sergei, We as staff of Kimberley Manor Guesthouse was bitterly disappointed in your actions on Saturday 8th February 2020. Not only did you arrive at our premises being under the influence of alcohol but so did your guest, ringing our doorbell continuously threatening the owner if he does not open for him he will call the police (what nerve he had). The owner approached you and asked you politely that the said guest is not welcome onto the property after his remarks. You completely disregarded this message and let him onto our establishment allowing this individual to further insult the owner in his own home.( how did you think this was OK?) We are not a 24 hour hotel with a 24 hour front desk, hence we contacted you several times in the week to confirm your arrival time to which you did not bother in replying to our emails or messages. Please rather give our lovely establishment a skip should you pass through Kimberley in the future.

The furnishings seem expensive - and maybe this is what is recovered in the price. I have only seen online advertisements referring to spacious rooms with balconies but I got a room with no window. (It was changed thank you, but the fact is it was deemed appropriate at a rate of almost R1 000 for one person).

The staff tried hard and was friendly, but I am still waiting for the coffee I ordered with breakfast. Similar to another review I find the child-like rules of "no food in the room" sad.

The fridge in the room was switched off and not clean. The linen and towels have known better days. No drinking water in the room (fridge switched off?). A limited supply of coffee/tea with a chipped mug. The kettle can only reach the electrical plug if put on the floor.

Everything would have been bearable at half the price. If tourists believe this is appropriate due to stronger currencies I am happy for them. Imagine how cheap their holiday could really be if this was priced appropriate for what is offered.

Not a place suitable for a business trip. No space to work.

Response from Kimberley M, Public Relations Manager at Kimberley Manor Guest House

Greetings, The room that was booked from your travelbooker was the exact same room given. On our website as with all websites we advertise on it's noted it is a "Standard Room with No View". This room sells for R730 including breakfast as was paid. Since you were unhappy we upgraded you FREE of charge to a "Presidential Suite" at no extra cost to you. The "No Eating" in the rooms policy applies as this brings unwanted pests including ants, cockroaches etc. You would not eat in your room at your own home so why do it at ours? We therefore have a beautiful enclosed Lapa area and dinning room for this very purpose, fully equipped. Ironically the Linen you used was five weeks old and was purchased in the first week of January 2020. Amenities in each single room consists of 2x coffee, 2 x Milk, 2 tea (Rooibos & Black), 4 Sugar. The fridges are turned off and can be easily turned on should you have the use for them. All our rooms has a desk and work chair in them in order to work as we cater for the corporate traveler. We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us and look forward in improving our service.

We were misled. We were given a room that we never asked for, own self catering room. This room was situated outside of the house, we paid for standard room but received the least room. Furthermore, site stated that there's free wifi, which is one of the reasons we chose this accommodation as we needed the net for preparations of our trip, however upon our request for password,we were informed there's no wifi in the outside room which we did not even book!

Response from Kimberley M, Owner at Kimberley Manor Guest House

Greetings Themba, The booking in question was made by your PA via Booking.com for one person in our self-catering unit. We do have proof of this. You then emailed us to advise it will be two people traveling instead of one. We gladly amended the invoice. If you would have preferred a Luxury suite why did you not book one accordingly or ask for a upgrade at front-desk? We treat all our guests in the same non-discriminatory manner and we are sorry that you feel this way.

I enjoyed a great and hospitable stay at Kimberley Manor. My room was really cosy, despite the colf Kimberley weather. Breakfast was delicious and the check in and check out procedure seamless.

Chantal and her team are great and I would would definitely recommend Kimberley Manor for anyone visiting Kimberley!

It sucks I only stayed for 2 days but I'm definitely heading back. I liked the fact they have indoor braai facilities for guests. I stayed in the honeymoon suite and it was incredible.

Also Chantal and the staff were welcoming.
