I was staying in Rosedale Guangzhou for 3 nights and it is my 3rd trip and I'm afraid- my last one. We chose the hotel previously as it was near the metro station and also near the home of an elderly couple whom we meet up with every trip to Guangzhou. I accept that the hotel is dated and the this includes the peeling furniture and stained carpets. This recent trip however was the last straw for me as it was so noticable that the strong "deordarent" in the hallways could no longer mask the musky smelling carpets. There are water marks on the wall paper and saints on the carpets. The worst was the musky smell in the bathroom. The shower curtains were also stained and mouldy at the bottom and looking down at the drainage hole, the cover is rusty. I would say that previously I could close one eye to the old furniture but when it is combined with a foul smell - I cannot choose to not breathe in order not to smell! When I came back to my room one day, the room was made up but my pyjama gown was on the floor?!!!
Also this time, when we arrived in a taxi with several big bags. I had earlier noticed a uniformed staff (like bellboy or concierge) standing OUTSIDE, but after we had unloaded our bags and turned around, he disappeared and was standing INSIDE the lobby and far away from the door. So we had to struggle with our bags and open the heavy glass door for ourselves as well. As mentioned I have stayed in this hotel before and I KNOW (and could see) that there were at least THREE of them around the lobby behind the concierge counter at any one time. Non offered to help.
What really made up our minds on not ever returning is the attitude of the staff. We had arranged for a courier to pick up a pair of faulty earplugs at the concierge (to be returned to the shop) When the courier arrived while we were out of the hotel. The had refused to give the courier the package even though we had specifically spoken to them prior to leaving the hotel. When we came back and asked them why was it so difficult, they said it is a law by the police. We were very upset as it was clear they were using the police to scare us or try to shut us up. We are seasoned travellers (for work) and have arranged courier services (even urgent night time pick ups) before in other hotels in China. When we highlighted this to the reception staff, they were patronising and not helpful and vague about the actual regulations.
There are many hotels and options and until they do a complete renovation and buck up their service (which we see is very competition in a city like Guangzhou), I say stay away.
Wifi is non-existent.
