If looking for a budget hostel within close range from the city centre, this is the place to stay.
Although, by and large, the hostel is cozy, there are still some improvements to be made. For instance, mattresses are too old and the springs may be felt on one's back. Walls are holed and narrow; consequently, guests might actually hear noises coming from the kitchen, from the toilets and from the next-door room.
The common area on the basement is amazing and well-equiped with board games, musical instruments and good music.
Breakfast is yummy and solid. The staff is friendly and provides good advice to hit the highlights without wasting money.
For granted, this hostel is worth giving it a shot.
The location was perfect, close to the old historic centre. And the ambience was great when we entered. They have a nice ‘living room’ area where they also have games. We arrived early in the morning, could drop our bags and even enjoy breakfast.
As we arrived early in the morning and dropped off our bags, the staff told us the beds would be ready at 2PM. When we arrived around 2.15PM (we were really tired after the night train and in desperate need of a shower), the staff told us the cleaning lady hadn't even arrived yet. We asked what she could do and her answer was "well, it's not my fault, I can't do anything about it". Then she suggested we put our bags in the room already and take a shower, we were free to use the facilities. We walked to the room and there was a horrible chemical smell, the beds were moved and the mattresses weren't properly placed. Movers were coming in and out with new lockers. We couldn't put our stuff anywhere and it looked not nearly finished. After another talk, we could go to another room - the lady made the bed around 3.30PM. The next day, the shower was cold. Also, the showers don't have locks.
Location: perfect. It's a quick 5 minute walk to the black church and surrounding restaurants and bars. 2km from bus station to Bran.
Rooms: There are 3 rooms (that I know of) with different amount of bunkbeds. The bed was comfy and each came with a side lamp and charge socket
Staff: very helpful! They helped with directions for day trips to Bran.
Breakfast: Toast, butter/jam, cereal, tea/coffee, orange juice. Standard.
Kitchen: plenty of pots and pans, although the kitchen is very small. Room enough for only one cook at a time
All and all, very good hostel in my experience. Very clean throughout and no problems at all during my stay
Would recommend to everyone

The Evil Clown is a simple hostel with a simple style that doesn't go over the top so has quite a personal touch.
The staff here were very nice and friendly, each bed had a charging port as well as an USB charging option (so you don't need an adapter, if from outside Europe),great showers, kitchen facilities and the reception is a small basement bar/pub. Not a rowdy bar/pub like you might have back home. It's really mainly other guests there 99% of the time.
This is essentially the main common area but there is still the kitchen to sit and chat outside of your room. The bar/pub sells lemonade, toasted cheese and ham sandwiches (better than they might sound) and a few different alcoholic drinks. All of which are very cheap.
The only things I could imagine improving the place is maybe more options with the free breakfast. You get 3 cereal options, toast, jams, chocolate spread, biscuits and free apples but some more fruit would be perfect but yes, this is a free breakfast. I'd also love another couple of food options in the bar, the sandwich I had was great (chose the unadvertised large option). I would normally go somewhere else for food but it was such a great little place to talk to other guests that a couple of other food options would have been perfect (maybe sharing foods like cheesey nachos? Some of you may cringe at the sacrilegious thought while in the special place that is Brasov).
The location is just around the corner from the bus station (not to be confused with the autogarta's) and the main square/old town which is brilliant.
With so much to do there, I would come to Brasov again and I would definitely come to the Evil Clown when/if I do.
I stayed three nights here. It was a very interesting place! Whilst renovations are taking place check-in was in a basement pub. I got in late in the evening so it was dark and as I descended the stairs from the side alley the evil clown logo was staring down at you... The only creepy part of my trip to Transylvania ;-) but that was soon forgotten after meeting the friendly English-speaking staff. My room was also interesting. There was 2 bunk beds and then in a loft space, 3 mattresses. It was nice and peaceful up there but I did crack my back on the low beams more than once... A standard breakfast is included, there is the bar downstairs, cooking facilities are available and the location is really good. So overall a very good experience!
