Bad start, arrived and couldn’t find the reception, no signs of any kind to guide you... After a very brief “welcome” we had a quick light lunch despite no real light bites available. Went to the room which has a great sea view with terrace but is very basic. Not even shower gel...not mentioning a bed carpet on the floor... Rooms are also noisy due to stone floors. Internet : several attempted needed to log in (logs you out several times) and connection is very slow.
Last but not least, despite an early 10 am check out, a request to delay it by 30 minutes was denied... Pity, the place as potential but you can feel the lack of interest for non regular clients. The tone is given from the start when arriving on the car parking there is a....cash machine !
Delightfully quirky and friendly hotel in a blissfully quiet bay not far from Hvar town. Lovely walks and beaches. Comfortable room with small balcony. We stayed half board as there did not seem anywhere else to eat. The meal was a fixed menu which might not suit everyone. Delightful place to visit.
Setting. Getting to this place takes you through a narrow tunnel, but that's the last fuss. Cause once you exit the tunnel, you end up in a place looking like some impressionist Mediterranean painting. Colours, cicadas, sunshine, rugged scenery, scents (really gorgeous! what is that? pines? lavender? can't be just grass?), all of this so intense that it should be per-scripted to folks wishing to get rid of gloom and negativity.
Once you book in Skalinada, you see how everything here is low-key yet top-notch. The place is family owned by nice people dedicated to make Skalinada so welcoming. Sea is so close one can practically jump in from the room (still, usage of stairs is recommended). The beach is not big, but it makes up for by being so cozy with crystal water and dark pines.
Food. You know how people can be annoying telling you over and over again how food tasted like real food when they were kids? On well, it's time to hear that from me too. Once you take a simple bite of, let's say a tomato, first thing you think is that it tastes just like tomatoes used to taste back in the days when you were a kid. It's just an example of sensations one gets here simply by dining in Skalinada restaurant. Staff of this place is perfectly dosed - always there to help you, but never pushy. Not only tomatoes, food served here is outstanding, simply prepared!, from fresh Mediterranean (plenty of seafood) to more hearty continental Croatian dishes. And the cakes, oh dear.
Wines. Oh well, where to start. Hvar island is huge in wine-making, but wine-list includes non-local wines as well. However since I like to "feel like a local", I ordered a glass of red Plavac. Smooth and strong, a real sunshiny Med kick! After just one glass one gets an irresistible urge to do something. In my case it was to write this review. You can sip wines on the terrace as views are spectacular, but for me the best place to enjoy drinks was the beach bar.
Trivia. Skalinada is an old popular Croatian pop-hit. YouTube it, I'd say it does capture that feeling of a sunny day in a dreamy Med village behind the narrow tunnel.
Me and my mum went here for fours days at the end of September.
It was absolutely wonderful!!
The room was lovely and they we're very accommodating in setting up an extra bed so that we didn't have to share (as they only had one double room left). Our balcony had an amazing view of the mountain behind the hotel in one direction and the sea in the other direction. Just beautiful!
The private cove is perfect for relaxing with very clear blue water, great for snorkelling as the rocks and pebbles are really unusual in colour and pattern and there are plenty of little fish darting about as you swim.
The hotel staff are very, very friendly and helpful and make you feel at home immediately. The hotel owner and his wife are very hands on in the running of the hotel and sociable with the guests as is the bar/restaurant manager who was very nice to us!
The food is also really delicious, one night we had absolutely the best fish I have ever eaten with the most tasty potatoes I have ever had as well!! And the steak is also very well prepared and perfectly cooked.
There is a really pretty walk along the coast to the very tiny and picturesque Zavala harbour near by where you can have a refreshing drink at the little bar situated just on the edge of the cove.
Hvar town is not too far (about 50mins drive If my memory is correct!) and is a very nice harbour town with lots of restaurant, shops and bars.
I would DEFINITELY recommend staying at Skalinada as it was truly a beautiful and welcoming place, a haven away from the busy life of city living. A great place for couples or families.
Have and amazing time!!
TIP: When flying to Split it is advisable to stay a night there either side of your trip as to catch the flight back home usually means getting the 5am ferry from Hvar to Split. Split also has very impressive architectural history and worth exploring.
Skalinada is a real green paradise right by the sea, but away from crowds of tourists. If you are looking for a quiet holiday, you will enjoy it.
The place has a beautiful garden, full of Mediterranean herbs. Besides the rooms in the main building they also have 3 nice Dalmatian houses with 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, perfect for a family. Each house has a fireplace, and a quiet terrace overlooking flower beds, and with sea view in the background. The restaurant serves delicious Dalmatian food (one night fresh fish, one night meat) - this definitely sets it apart from an average Croatian guesthouse.
All in all a great find, and strongly recommended!
