This property is just lovely. The sound of a birds and a cockerel gently wake you up. It’s delightful. It is set in beautiful countryside with olive, peach, apricot and fig trees and much more and the Pyrenees as a backdrop. For breakfast there are freshly laid eggs, peaches and home made jam! The owner is very welcoming and accommodating. There is a well maintained swimming pool, barbecue area and there are goats to pet and free roaming chickens. Our accommodation was basic, clean and typical of a French farmhouse. It is a great place to base yourself with the beaches nearby. You are free to come and go as you please. Home from home. Unfortunately we only stayed two nights as we were there for a family wedding but we are already planning a return for longer.
We stayed for two weeks in Ecurie 4 in Mas Bazan in July 2016 and really enjoyed our stay there. The gite itself is comfortable and quiet (if basic) and has a strong environmentally-friendly vibe. There is a private area outside where you can barbecue and sit in the evenings. Very private. The bedrooms upstairs were very hot, but then it is very hot there in July. There is also a large bedroom downstairs which is a good deal cooler at night. Adding some small things like screens on the windows, hooks on the back of doors or a plastic tablecloth for the outdoor table would make a big difference to the gite, which could be really lovely with a few additional touches such as these. (this is the only reason I have given a score of 4 rather than 5 for this property). The communal areas are lovely, especially the pool area surrounded by trees and flowers and the dining area in the main courtyard. You can choose to have dinner at the gite which we did on several occasions. This is a great option for anyone with kids or with an elderly or infirm guest, when you don't want to leave the gite but still have the experience of dining out. (Or just when you're tired after a day at the beach!) The food is really good and very reasonably priced. There are lots of things to do in the locality and the nearby village of Alenya has a shop, pharmacy, places to eat and is in walking distance from the gite.
First of all we did not have a chambre d'hotes but we rented a gîte. We had rented 'Gîte pigeonnier'.
This gîte is huge and has space up to 9 people in 3 separate rooms. Two rooms have an own small bathroom with shower. The other room is a sort of attic (pigeonnier --> a dovecote) that is quite large but extremely hot in summer.
The area is very nice and has a very large swimming pool in a green garden.
Now the uncomfortable part. On the window tablets there was a lot of feces from bats which live in the small holes above the windows. I have no problem with bats but it's not a tastefull sight near a kitchen.
There were also a lot of mosquitos and keeping the windows closes was not an option because of the heat in summer. Wind was a fresh comfort. An easy solution for the owner would have been the placement of mosquito/fly screens.
There was no space to leave your groceries: no rackspace or cupboard. The kitchen was very small in this huge gîte. Much room for improvement there.
In the room you had to hold the shower in your hand, there was no handle to hang the shower. Which is awkward.
It seemed the gîte was divided in the early days. My guess it was a larger space before. Guests next door made a lot of noise in an unintentional manner. Walking on the old floor, stairs and closing doors made noise and kept us out of our sleep.
In short some positive notes:
- The pool area was really nice.
- The other gîtes seemed nicer but haven't checked and were all occupied
- Place is centrally located to visit nearby places as there are Banyuls-sur-Mer, Collioure, Leucate, Barcarès, Perpignan or even Carcassonne.
- In short, this gîte is not worth the price.
