Every guest who has stayed at Colonel's resort in Bir has nothing but the highest of praise for it. This is only due to the fact that it is a labor of love for the Col. and his wife, a most delightful couple, who also happen to be the owners. In fact, by their own admission, they have not taken a holiday in years - their job is their pleasure. And that is what makes a stay at the Colonel's such a delight. It is like staying with a member of your own family.

The rooms are extremely comfortable with a simple and tasteful decor. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price of the room and needless to mention that both are delicious.

All the staff at the resort have been very well trained to attend to the needs of the guests, in particular Mr. Vishnu. If you appreciate anything he will immediately tell you where it can be obtained from, if not procure it for you. The Col. himself will offer to take you for a walk in the morning along the most picturesque treks with fabulous views of the surrounding mountains. Since his family has owned this land for 4 generations, he is very knowledgeable about the history and the area.

All in all would strongly recommend Colonel's resort to anyone looking for a quiet getaway amidst beautiful mountains in a beautiful resort. You will leave utterly refreshed and wondering when is the earliest you could come back.

We booked our rooms for 1 night and 2 days. We were welcomed to the huge property, that has a tea estate, horses, dogs and wonderful people. We liked the place right away. The owner was physically there to understand our needs and arranged for everything that was required for a luxurious stay. The food served for all the meals, was homely and delicious. The bathroom toiletries provided were rich in quality. The rooms are spacious and very well-maintained. Every tiny details was taken care of. There is no room service, and the means or high tea requires to walk to the common area, wherein you can indulge in conversations with co-travelers and the owners. They also arranged for a birthday cake. We returned with happy memories.

In January, I decided to fulfill a long-held dream to visit India. I flew into New Delhi from San Francisco, joined up with a few others, and rode a rented van north. The trip was exhausting, I ended up feeling as if I'd bitten off more than I could chew. We stayed one night in Bir, at the Colonel's Resort. We arrived late at night, but the Colonel and his wife couldn't be more gracious. They had waited up for our group, and gotten dinner ready. I wasn't feeling well, so I ate in my room. The Colonel had my food brought to the room, and even though I couldn't eat very much, the food was delicious. I continued on to Dharamsala, but on the way back I passed by Bir again, and this time spent almost a week at The Colonel's Resort. I never wanted to leave! I loved the care and concern showed me by everyone, from the Colonel and his wife, down to each member of their staff. The food was delicious, and I always had second helpings. The Colonel grows his own tea, and vegetables, and is moreover an expert guide. He took me on daily walks (when it wasn't raining), and I felt super-charged and happy. I was traveling by myself, and that can be a very lonely experience. But it wasn't lonely, not in Bir, because of the Colonel's warm hospitality. Afterwards, he and his wife drove me to Amritsar, and treated me to a delicious dinner (of fish, a special Amritsar delicacy). They found me a wonderful (and very reasonable) hotel, and the next day they took me to the Golden Temple. Everything about my India trip was magical. I want to go back, of course. But this time, I'm not making any other stops -- I'll just head straight to Bir.

Pros-
1. Beautiful Property- 5/5
2. Very well maintained rooms - We stayed in Deluxe room, which I can easily say is best in that valley- 5/5
3. Nice Food- 4/5
4. View and location - Just woow- 5/5
Cons-
1. Restrictions- As u can't have a drink in a room, which I found very odd. There is fixed time to enter in hotel in night ,otherwise main gate will be closed.
It reminded me of my old hostel days with a warden around.
Overall..still it's best in bir , including near by places. I m saying it because I visited this area too often

The best and the most comfortable way to reach here is by flight. There are a large  number of over night trains from Delhi to Pathankot and then a taxi (3hrs) to Bir. There is a Volvo Bus service from ISBT to Baijnath (11 Kms from Bir). Room rates are between INR 3000 - 4000 + taxes with meals & drinks on actual basis. Sightseeing is arranged with many Buddhist Monastries to visit including Dharamshala & McLeodganj ( Dalai Lama's residence ) 2 hours drive .
