We arrived here at the end of 2 great weeks around north and center of Portugal. We had checked before this place several times and by the pictures it looked great, so this time we decided to pay a visit and stay here for 2 nights. When we arrived the fist impression was that the place was very dry and not well kept, the paint on the building is old and dirty and the green area is only around the pool and that's it...and even around the pool the maintenance and care for the place it's not that great and the garden furniture (sun loungers) were very cheap/uncomfortable...after 2 weeks in other fantastic places around the country, this was really a deception. After checking in and arriving to the room, the nice young lady that received us, showed us the commodities, where again the description of what we booked was not aligned...The suite specification says that there is cable TV and the TV has 4 channels, for a family suite with small kids, cartoons is always a plus... but the critical part is that it says the suite has a kitchenette with a refrigerator and the kitchenette is a cabinet with a sink, a micro-wave and a minibar... There was no place to cook a meal and no refrigerator...we had just gone to the supermarket to buy food for our meals...the Minibar is very small and doesn't refrigerate anything properly...and if we want to have a meal we had to go to Portalegre for it...we were very disappointed with the place particularly because it was quite expensive and in our opinion the price/quality/offer does not match. This was by far the worst of all places we stayed in our 2 weeks vacations and the most expensive. We'll not return
room was very ample (top floor suite) and fresh even considering the peak of the summer temperatures; infrastructure is nice and you can see there's lots going on as owner is an innovative wine producer and former renowned ballet dancer - a pity that you need to find this out by yourself as the staff (owner's daughter!!!) doesn't even tell you; pool is nice and refreshing and a great venue for the kids to waste some energy; the property dogs are kids-friendly and love being cuddled; breakfast buffet is modest but attentive; a nice experience, but a bit pricey for what it is.
Warm welcome from charming owner. Secure parking. Room was spacious with very comfortable bed. Useful little kitchen. We slept well, it is so quiet and peaceful here yet very close to Portalegre. Beautiful log fire in the communal sitting room was very relaxing. Breakfast was fine (apart from the orange juice). We are not really wine aficionados but it was very interesting staying in a winery that the owner has such pride in. Would be very happy to spend a few more days here.
A quick NOTE before you even consider this or any other similar place: you must be tolerant to bugs (spiders, flies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, ...) and you must be looking for a really quiet place, far away from any routine or city noise.
The place has an amazing view over São Mamede, super quiet and super relaxing. The pool is directed right at the mountain. The place itself is in the middle of nowhere, about 5 mins (car) from Portalegre. If you want a quiet place to spend some days and you want to visit the surroundings, then this is the place.
Rooms: The rooms are excellent, though I have two quick notes - the room is too hot in the morning (it is direct to east) and it does not have any big windows to ventilate it adequately (you will use the air conditioning a lot). The second note is that I found the beds/pillows too stiff and I woke up in the morning with my back stiff.
Breakfast: Really nice, local ingredients, home made stuff. It could have more variety though.
Place: Amazing => 5 stars. No comments here
Service/Employees: everyone is super nice and eager to help. I have to note that I found the place "empty" at some times - no employees or customers in sight. No one dining or lunching, ...
My advice: stay at this place (really quiet) and plan to visit Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Portagem (near Marvão), Campo Maior (during "Festas do Povo"), Crato if during "Festival do Crato". During the morning or afternoon, take a swim at the amazing pool in Cabeças de Reguengo, with that breathtaking view over S.Mamede's Mountains
By the way: Portalegre is awesome to eat amazing typical Portuguese food! Use TripAdvisor's advice on the restaurants, you will not regret!
Beautifully presented hotel in a really peaceful location. Most of the time all we could hear was water running, cow bells and very quiet jazz. Most the breakfast provisions are sourced from the estate. The rooms are spaciousand include a small 'kitchen' area, too small to cook, OK for lunch though. There is an excellent games room that we used every day, with a pool table, card table and samrt TV. The games room also has a couple of exercise machines. The free wifi was fast. Our only gripe was that the pool was very cold. It is not heated and even during some 30+ degree days in August, it was still very cold. There is plenty to do and see in the area (Marveo and Elvas), however, the local resturants were not that great, but these negatives should not put you off going here if you want to relax.
