We booked in advance via a reputable BOOKING website, based on the advertised description and had email confirmation for the 4 person family room- as per the website description. Upon arrival we found that the advertised room description differed considerably to what we were actually given.
The 4 person apartment type room booked did not have the following: tea/coffee maker, balcony, refrigerator, microwave, kettle, kitchenware, stovetop, toaster, etc.
The room was advertised as a family suite but all we got was one double room plus two single beds crammed into an area that had obviously been part of the hallway for the main building on the ground floor. See pictures which show the so-called family suite!
Instead of having a kitchen area in the room, we were told that we only had access to a communal kitchen area (that doubled up as the area where the staff serve breakfast from) and nowhere in the advert or email confirmation did it state this.
This is in our opinion blatant mis-advertising and completely misleading.
We took pictures of the hallway area that had been converted into part of the bedroom and the top of the door had see-through glass, next to which was the breakfast area for all guests. Any other guests sat outside the door to our room could peep over the top part of the door and look into the so-called bedroom area. There was a breakfast table for guests literally touching the door to our room (see picture). This is where my two kids would have been sleeping (had we stayed there).
We complained immediately to Brian, the very nice Italian chap, who was on duty and he was very apologetic. There was no way we could stay in this type of room and no others were available so we strongly objected and asked for a full refund and opted to find alternative accommodation at short notice.
Brian called the ‘British’ duty manager (Heidi) on the phone and we were told that we would get a full refund. However, when we contacted the Booking agent, they subsequently spoke to Heidi who informed them we would actually have to pay 1 nights charge and have the rest via refund. I called Heidi myself to complain about being charged and the reason why we could not stay in the room and all she did was speak very rudely and hang up on me instead of discussing the fact that she had agreed to a full refund about an hour beforehand.
Furthermore, the Maltese Sun was undergoing renovation, meaning no access to the patio area– even though one was advertised. Parking outside on the street was also a nightmare as we had to drive round for ages until we found a space.
We were fortunate enough to find other accommodation just around the corner which was as advertised and turned out to be excellent.
We contacted the BOOKING agent again and shared pictures of the room we had been given, the agent was very understanding indeed and thankfully agreed to refund the 1 night charge the Maltese Sun had taken from us.
We will definitely use the Booking agent again but as far as the Maltese Sun is concerned, it’s not very sunny where they’re heading.
No doubt the manager will have her own version of events but pictures don’t lie.
We visited Malta many years ago and were always keen to return to this beautiful island. We wanted to go back to the St. Julian’s area as it is an ideal location for swimming with a vibrant selection of cafes and restaurants. We found the Maltese Sun on the internet and booked in for four nights. It looked good online but we never expected it to be as nice in real life. Located on a quiet street it is very close to a great selection of restaurants, bars and cafés. Christoffel, Joanna and Tina were so helpful in making recommendations and reservations for us and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We stayed in a beautiful family room which was immaculately clean, very peaceful and had the most comfortable beds. We ate delicious breakfasts on the roof terrace and explored beautiful Malta during the days. There’s excellent access to public transport from this location and we travelled to Valletta every day by bus which takes about twenty minutes. We would highly recommend a trip to Malta and a stay in the Maltese Sun. Christoffel made fantastic recommendations that you may not find in guidebooks, local knowledge always reveal the hidden gems. We hope to return to the Maltese Sun very soon.
Lodging is in a quiet street, but close to a sea promenade (where you can also catch a bus to Valetta) and a few minutes by foot from the public beach. San Julian can be reached by easy walk along a sea promenade. Easy check-in. Staff was friendly, room with high ceiling gave some feel of space, newly redone bathroom was nice feature to have, air-conditioning worked well.
A Guesthouse in a great location, easy to get around Malta (bus stop just around the corner) and around 10 minutes by foot to the Sliema Ferries ( easy to get Valetta ). I would like to say a big thank you to The Maltese Sun staff, Joanne and Bryan were very friendly and gave us a lot of attention, they helped to find which bus to take, where to go and where to eat. We had a room with a private garden where we used to have breakfast with perfect atmosphere -the one you want on holiday -
We would highly recommend anyone to stay here while visiting Malta.
I couldn’t have hoped more from my stay at The Maltese Sun:
It all start at the reception where Bryan makes you feel at home, and gives you precious advice (where to eat, drink some good Maltese wine, nice beaches, bus directions ...).
I also enjoyed a nice continental breakfast (with some Maltese specialties too!).
And finally the bedroom itself. A very comfortable bed, a spotless bathroom, and moreover a private garden!!
Everything was perfectly clean,
I cannot recommend enough this guesthouse !
