So, I’ll give a very honest review here which is exactly what I look for when booking any holiday.
Now, this hotel had its good and bad points. The hotel it’s self is a lovely hotel with a scenery to boot. That I can not fault. It’s extremely high on steep hills. Again to be expected with Crete. The hotels appearance Is great and the check in is smooth. Now we booked originally a sea view shared pool double room. But... they’re are two sections of the hotel. The new section and the older section. The sea view rooms are the older rooms which are highly dated. We upgraded to the sea view shared suite which is the new upgraded section of the hotel. The room we upgraded to was lovely. All the amenities with a large walk in shower wet room and a balcony with sun loungers and sofa with a view of the sea and spinalonga. The pool however was under 1 metre deep. So it’s more of a ‘photo opportunity’ but in my eyes not worth the upgrade money wise.
The bar staff and buggy staff work tirelessly to make everyone satisfied for this I can’t fault as they are great! The only way to really get around the hotel is using the golf buggy’s as above.
Now, to the actual hotel itself. There is a buffet option everyday with an Asian restaurant at the top of the hotel with a private bar, the buffet is very ‘samey’ as you’d expect and make sure you love feta cheese as you’ll be eating a lot of it! All of the alcohol on the bar is ‘local’ they do have premium spirits which are named brands of which you are charged for. You have two pools one of which is an jacuzzi style pool. There’s no need to rush down for sun beds at the crack of dawn as you’ll have no issue in getting a bed.
***You have towels provided for you everyday at reception and a heads up is to take towel clips as it does get very windy***
There is a spa and gym on site, you receive a singular or couples massage once during your stay which is great. However, they will try absolutely everything to get you spend a fair amount of cash on massages, that ofcourse is your discretion.
The entertainment, long and short... there is none. None whatsoever. You have a Cretan night which is odd as it’s a bloke stirring cheese staring at you for 2 hours. A quiz night and that’s it. So we spent the majority of evenings out of the hotel.
To end this review, the hotel was ok. The average age group is 35+ years old. The hotel is more of a photo opportunity. No entertainment and you’re limited on food and drink. Would we return? To Elounda definitely. To Crete? Absolutely... but to the Elounda Blu? No unfortunately. We was (for what we paid) thoroughly disappointed. However you will enjoy Elounda as a whole and I definitely recommend going into Plaka for an evening. Both taxi fares from the hotel are around 8 euros you won’t be disappointed by the choice of which you’re spoilt for.
Also this is important!!! **** on your last day at 12:30pm a truck will come and pick up your suitcases. So you check in with the Thomas cook rep at reception and she’ll provide your boarding passes and check you in. Trust me, it’ll save you around 2 hours at the airport as the airport is unorganised chaos! ****
We have visited Crete before and were drawn by the reviews and website of Elounda Blu. Recently, we had seen some pretty scathing reviews and were worried about what we'd read, so we upgraded to level 7 with a jacuzzi on the veranda as the garden room reviews were scary.
So pleased we did, the view is amazing, perfect turquoise sea, rarely a wave, so protected by Kolkithoi and Spinalonga.
The hotel was great: staff are all friendly, maids, buggy guys, restaurant staff all very professional. It is VERY steep up to level 7 and 8. I used the gym a couple of times and walked back up- it took 9 hard minutes, and you are about halfway up the surrounding mountains by then. So the buggies are a really good feature, much needed, and always available- it's a 24hr service.
The restaurant food was really good, buffet style but with really good variety. The food was regularly refreshed and the breakfast range was huge. Outside, there can be quite a bit of hassle from wasps by the end of August, but you cannot possibly blame the hotel for that. They don't keep their own wasps! I do feel like dessert areas at least could do with glass hygiene guards, but overall, great.
The complimentary massage was an unexpected feature, as was the leaving gift. You can't fault the effort made by the hotel to make it special.
There is evening entertainment of the type you often get: Cretan dance, Latin disco, but the most outlandish was 2 guys playing lyra and Bouzouki. For some reason, they invited a local along to make cheese at the same time. It was very odd to see a couple of hundred people watch a fat shepherd stirring a pan of milk for half hour without saying a word!
The 700's seem to have the perfect view of Spinalonga and the grounds are really good. A really nice hotel, really enjoyed it. We went half board but on the final day, we wanted to buy lunch and was surprised just how little was available. Truly limited for a hotel of this style: it doesn't seem the all-inclusive offer is quite at the level of the rest of it.
A second visit to the hotel giving how much we enjoyed the first visit 3 years ago and our desire to enjoy a special holiday this year.
We were not disappointed - We had a fantastic time and everything went really well including rooms and facilities.
We were in room 205. For those like myself in my middle years, being on the first 3/4 levels going up the hill is a big plus but if you don’t mind the hill the views get better the further up the hill you are.
Can’t fault the room, food, pool and the beach (it’s small stones vs sand but very well setup and the crystal clear water is perfect )
The views onto the bay are breathtaking and plenty of Restraunts in both elounda and plaka if you want a night out. You can walk into these and a trip to spinalonga and a walk around the bay over the causeway is a most.
We went all inclusive - wanted to avoid having to go outside the hotel every day for meals and well worth it given the selection of bars and the quality of the food - given hotel is adults only, it’s pretty chilled at meal time.
The only room for improvement to call out ( so this is balanced ) is the gym which could do with an upgrade - equipment is limited and outdated.
A special thank you to the staff for being so welcoming and friendly and many thanks for the special cake presented to us by the hotel for our 25th.
I suspect, all things being well, you will see us again next year.

Me and my friend took several treatments at the SPA; full body scrub, Cretan massage, facial and anti-cellulite massage. Alexandra and especially Paschalis took extremely good care of us, making these the best treatments I’ve ever had. Well-trained, relaxed as well as funny and ever-smiling, we felt really pampered with and we wish we could go back, again and again and again. Thanks Paschalis for helping me with stiff hips, lower back and upper legs from all gym visits, I’m sorry I couldn’t pack you in my bag when I went home. Wish you all the best and the SPA comes highly recommended by me and my friend. Thanks again!
We visited Elounda Blu 25th June to 10th July 2019 for our honeymoon/1st year anniversary.
We first booked Elounda Blu for our honeymoon in July 2018, but my husband had a nasty accident and we had to cancel and claim on our insurance. We were obviously gutted. We've since had a pretty bad year with lots of operations and hospital stays for my husband. But he was well enough for us to go for two weeks and spend our 1st year anniversary.
Our first contact via email with the hotel was excellent with my endless questions answered promptly.
I just cannot gush enough about this place, the food was excellent, our room was gorgeous, we stayed in room 621 with a private sea view and swim up pool. Buggy's up and down which is a god send with my husbands leg and the heat.
We would like to say a special thank you to Maria the concierge, she was outstanding. She helped us to book a restaurant locally for our anniversary meal and organised a cake for us. It didn't end there, she took the time to check we were ok and if we needed anything. She gave excellent customer service and please pass on our thanks to her. If you are visiting Elounda Blu and you need anything, go and find her, she is very helpful.
All the staff are excellent from cleaning staff, reception, and the restaurant manager (I do not know his name sorry).
We did visit the Asian restaurant once during our visit, I wish we hadn't though, the food in the Island Restaurant is far, far better. The waitress really rushed us, 3 courses in just under 45 minutes let alone the constant pouring of our wine in a bid to hurry us! Plus the comment that we ate there for free. Hardly!! Our all inclusive two week holiday was £4,500... that is certainly not free!! I was really unhappy about that experience, we ended up looking longily over the balcony at the gorgeous food down stairs. Never to be repeated. I would have given 1 star to this if there was anywhere on trip advisor I could have left the Asian restaurant a separate review.
I have left a separate review for the Aegon Spa as both my husband and I felt very harrassed by the constant selling outside the restaurant and on the beach twice a day every day.
Aside from the above, I would highly recommend Elounda Blu, it a beautiful hotel, modern, clean and aesteically pleasing. The customer service is outstanding and the location beautiful.
We have returned relaxed and healthy, albeit a few pounds heavier and badly needing the gym ;)
We will definitley be returning, thank you to everyone who made the end of a tough year truly memorable.
