This hotel is easy to reach by S-bahn or with a car. The rooms are comfortable (but clarify a nonsmoking room as one of our 2 rooms had a hint of smoke), and the dinner at restaurant and breakfast were outstanding. This place is a great value.
I arrived via taxi late on a Saturday night at Adolph's, glad to see the warmly lit restaurant was still open. I was welcomed by chef, owner, proprietor, baker all in one - an amazing young man. My single room was small but immaculate and equipped with everything I needed. In the morning I awoke to the intoxicating smells of baking and the sounds of families enjoying breakfast on the terrace. Breakfast is heavenly --- a rich assortment of breads, baked goods, fruit, sliced meat, cheeses - and fresh squeezed orange juice is brought to your table, as well as eggs any style. As I was leaving, I realized that a convenient tramline was just outside the parking area for the hotel, so I was able to get back to the Cologne train station, with one change of tram, for less than 2 Euros as opposed to the 20 Euro taxi ride the night before. This place might work best for families and people with cars, as it's some distance from the walkable tourist area of "downtown" Cologne. And I believe it's free parking.
Adolph's is situated just outside of Cologne's city centre, a 15 minute ride on the S-Bahn (the stop for which is right next to Adolph's) will take you to Köln HBF right next to the Dom.
Our room was cleaned daily and was very pleasant in size and character. However I would have much preferred a standard double bed as opposed to two singles pushed together.
We opted to include breakfast and the standard was always high. Fresh juice/tea/coffee and eggs if you wished were brought to you and a large array of baked goods, from their own bakery next door, with tasty meats and cheeses always on offer.
My only criticism of this otherwise lovely b&b would be of the wi-fi which frustratingly didn't stretch to our room and of our welcome. Yes, we arrived later at around 10pm but upon arrival we were simply handed the key to our room, left to wonder about check out times, wifi and the arrangements for breakfast. All information that is usually covered upon arrival.
Would definitely recommend.
Showed up a couple hours early for our check-in expecting to just drop off our luggage and store it behind the front desk. Without even asking them they expedited the cleaning of our room so that we could get fully check-in and settled in our room early. In the 20 mins that it took to do this they allowed us to sit in the restaurant and have some coffee and cocoa. Room was nice and the breakfast was good as well. Easy to get to downtown Cologne/Köln from here. Hosts couldn't have been nicer and would recommend this B&B for others.
Very easy to get to from Cologne Airport. Straight on the train at the airport then involves one easy change onto the underground, and then its about 8 minutes travel time to the guesthouse on the UBahn. The tram stop then is more or less right outside the door. The trams run regularly about every 8 mins so travelling to the centre is very easy. Rooms of a good size and spotlessly clean and plenty of red hot running water. People who work in the guesthouse/bakery/restaurant were so friendly and helpful. The restaurant is at the side of the bakery and this is where you take your breakfast. This was cereals, freshly baked breads, croissants cakes etc from the bakery, cheeses and cold meats. Eggs cooked to order and big pot of fresh coffee. Beautiful cosy relaxed atmosphere. Frequented by the locals as it is out of the city. Had a meal one night in the restaurant which was superb. One starter of chestnut soup, then one goose dish (gorgeous) and one veal schnitzel (delicious). Then one hot raspberries in some sort of alcohol with cream, and one raspberry sorbet. One of the biggest surprises was when we were presented with goose fat that had apple and mustard through it to spread on the bread - and this was so tasty. Never ever had anything like it. Cooking to a good level. Good selection of wines. We were there for 3 nights and could only get a reservation for one, as the restaurant was full every evening. Good indicator. Would highly recommend if you want something a little different, and willing to travel just that little bit further out of town. Bought some fruit vinegars on the markets as they tasted so good, but could not bring home on plane due to only having hand luggage. The staff in guesthouse again so helpful, told us to go one stop further up on the tram to a shop that did DHL Deutchse Post and ship them home. People in the shop so helpful, wrapped the bottles and boxed them for us - cost only 18 euros registered post, and now have Mango, Pomegranate, Cranberry, and Raspberry sauces/vinegars sitting in our kitchen. Also wifi worked fine in the bedroom. Very quiet location.
