Avoid at all costs!! This is by far the worst “hotel” I have ever stayed in. Filthy, staff rude, I was told they had overbooked and had no room for us even though we booked and paid weeks earlier, after 30 mins of the staff walking round the hotel they found us 2 separate single rooms at opposite sides of hotel. As we entered one of the rooms they had stuffed the windows with bath towels to keep out the elements. Snot and blood on walls, doors handing off, dead fly’s and scabs in bed, stained ceiling, loud noisy parties. This is more like a homeless shelter than a hotel. Fire risks at every turn. Please do not go to this hotel it is disgusting and I will be reporting it to the local authority. The lobby is deceiving, once you get in the lift it all changes. Smell of urine everywhere and freezing cold, I slept in all my clothes to keep warm and avoid touching the sheets. Receptionists did not care and took photo copies of my bank card. The place should be shut down, no refund offered or compensation for what happened. Disgraceful.

Lots of bad reviews, some I understand others not. Value for money, location etc 100%
£35 a night.
Room was a decent size warm and had all teas coffee along with TV etc
The lobby bar etc was really lovely.
Around a 10 minute walk from Bullring shopping.
Bad points, there was a dodgy smell now and again from bathroom.
But that’s about it, it’s more than acceptable room for the price.
I see lots of reviews blaming the hotel for car breaks in, or noise etc

As per most reviews, pay pennies expect the Ritz!

A friend and I have stayed this year, last year and 2 years prior when it was the Paragon.
This year we were put in the 4th floor which has yet to be renovated. The toilet seat was not attached and the too hot to touch radiator was in contact with the bed.
We complained and got moved to the 1st floor, the floor that has been renovated.
The room was a complete contrast to the first. Nicely decorated, fitted to a reasonable standard and a good enough space for 2.
The staff at the Rowton are, as always, fantastic. So polite and willing to help. I have never had a problem with any Rowton staff here.
The main point is that if you want to stay in a five star hotel then go and pay five star prices. However if you want a comfortable, friendly and reasonable hotel then you won't go far wrong with the Rowton.

After booking then reading reviews I really was expecting the worst. Walking from the train station (new street(10mins)) through a very run down (mainly derelict buildings) area, to the hotel. It is in an area that is 'less desirable (like an industrial estate) but it is on the outskirts of a city. The building itself is fab. Inside at reception we had to wait as we were early, along with a few couples, and it was clean and tidy and there was another area with more seating and was lovely. We were checked in, asked for I.D and card details (nothing wrong with that, I could be someone else, safety first) we were on the first floor and our friends were next door. The room was clean, tidy, pleasant and roomy.the bathroom was also clean and tidy. We slept very well. Walking round the hotel there are many 'features' that look orirginal. I'm no expert but is a really interesting building. Breakfast was a buffet style and was nice. There is a good choice of cereal and hot food, drinks, fruit, yoghurt. The furnishings all match the building, it's not pretentious.
Check out at 11:00 is a bonus too. Check out was simple. The bar didn't open until 17:00, bit odd I thought especially if people are getting there early. All the staff were friendly and pleasant. Google map the area before you go if in doubt. I don't mind walking around late at night but i can understand why people may find it intimidating. The road that the hotel is on is quite busy, not noisy, and there were always people about. There is parking on the street and around the area. Not sure if there was a car park. Didn't ask.

Dear Shellydoo1

It was pleasing to read your very positive and perceptive review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and particularly our extensive hot and cold buffet breakfast the next morning which is very popular and at only £7.95 represents excellent value.

I have however noted your comments concerning the bar opening time and we are proposing to open earlier on the weekends for early guest arrivals.

I stayed 3 nights during a work trip. Hotel looks impressive from the outside but inside it's another story. My room had a filthy carpet and walls in the room and bathroom were covered in stains! The whole room needed to be redecorated! We found canned fruit at breakfast was sour and off. I asked for fresh fruit but waitress never returned! Staff were uninterested and lacked any of motivation and enthusiasm. Best avoided.
