We stopped here in the late afternoon hoping to get a room for the night. The owner Louis was very accommodating, giving us a chalet for a good price. The room was spacious but not the cleanest, largely due to things falling from the thatched roof and our last minute arrival not giving them time to clean properly before our arrival. The kitchen had everything you would need, except a kettle. It would be a good spot to spend a couple days enjoying the lagoon and what Bilene has to offer. It was a pity we only had the one night there.
On arrival, After 10km off road the owner was not there. Only Some gardener who said just pick any room as there were no other guests!! Nobody! So we had a look in one of the rooms which looked ok but we did not like the fact of being alone there with no restaurant or what so ever nearby. So athough we had already prepaid we left and went somewhere else..
Firstly we did have a very relaxing time two families staying in Chalet No 9 the three bedroom one at the top of the hill with a fantastic view of the lagoon. Wonderful to see that sight each morning and at sundown.
Sadly the owners are letting the place go a bit to say the least. We had either no electricity or water, and when we did the aircon in one of the room over Christmas did not work half of the time. Most of this was down to lack of maintenance and investment, in generators, jo-jos for water etc. The owners restaurant and freezer did however continue to work - as they had a generator. Christmas Eve we had major rains and our room (the one WITH the working aircon) flooded and we had to bail it out for a couple of hours......
The whole lagoon is turning into a jet ski and quad bike heaven for "Gautengers" - the locals prefer the thumping club music at the local shabeen until 4 in the morning! It is getting over developed and there are better places to stay around Laguna.
All in all we had a good deal, relaxing time off the grid (no wi-fi or cell coverage - no TV either!) - spoilt by the lack of care and attention by the owners.
We ended up staying at the camp on route back to Jhb . What a horrid experience. Initially all looked ok, they gave us a 50% discount for out of season rate. R 600.00 for one night 3 people. We parked unloaded & went to the restaurant for some drinks & food. My beer had expired . The prawns mains we ordered were shrimp mains, both portions had over cooked & not cooked at all prawns & the vein had not been cleaned out. Our friend ordered a burger it was horrid. We went back to a chalet to sleep. We had 15 cockroaches in the shower. Our friend went out to fetch more Doom & he killed over 10 roaches & huge spider in his room. We were hounded by more & more roaches throughout the night. Eventually chucking all items out of the rooms and using 2 cans of Doom. Between the 2 rooms we killed well over 40 roaches & more @ 6 am when after no sleep we had had enough and wanted to leave. When checking the bed & nets for bugs we found black stuff under the pillows. This was a disgusting experience all round.
Our family stayed in Laguna camp 3 bedroom's chalet for two night in November 2012. The rooms are spacious, have very comfortable beds with mosquito nets and the having the air-con at night is great after spending the day out in the sun. The kitchen is fully equipped and the view from the veranda is spectacular. We had a great time in the swimming pool and the dinner at the restaurant was very good. The pizza is over priced but the seafood and fish were fantastic.
Overall, a great facility, friendly owner and staff, quiet place and secure. The camping sites looked very attractive as they were generous in size and well protected under the trees. I would definitely consider coming back again!
