We decided to extend our stay in Kyoto for a night and booked into the Marufuku for a night in a Japanese room.

Can’t say I’ll be rushing to sleep on tatami mats and futons again, but it was a good night for a very reasonable price! The staff in the hotel were friendly, welcoming and helpful and everything was clean and tidy. Complimentary coffee and hot water in the lobby was nice, and the location down a few little side streets made it feel like Japan, rather than a generic hotel.

Would stay here again!

We stayed for 7 nights at the Hotel Marufuku in September 2019. This accommodation does everything well. First the hospitality is exceptional; everyone was welcoming and helpful. The lounge area, where breakfast is served, is a wonderful space. Clean and comfortable room. Worth mentioning is that if you agree to have only your towels changed rather than the entire room cleaned they give you a complimentary drink ticket (highly recommend the Kyoto craft beer).

Loved this hotel for cleanliness, location, and helpful and thoughtful staff. Room was small but good beds , nice sleep. Shower room is compact but did the trick. This area is quiet and convenient. Close to the local train station and only 10 minutes walk from the busy shopping area and covered market. Too many temples to mention , but all are accessible by either bus or train. Me and my wife would definitely return if we visit Kyoto again.

This hotel is so new, you can still smell the 'newness' in the corridor. I stayed for four nights in a very comfortable twin Japanese style room with tatami mats. Though the room was small, and I had to be creative with my luggage placement, the futons were very comfortable and I slept well. The necessary bathroom amenities were all provided for, even some Japanese style pj's.

Breakfast was included in my booking, and you can choose from an adequate Western-style breakfast, or a Japanese one. I ate the Japanese option every day and it was so substantial that it kept me going until lunch!

The dining area and combined lounge has a modern, easy-going feel, and has plenty of helpful books to peruse for planning your day, usb charging points, and free tea and coffee all day. Staff at the reception are very helpful and speak good English. Had no issues with check-in or check-out, as they keep your luggage for you so you can still explore after you check-out.

Transport options are all within a few minutes walk, as the Sanjo station is a hub for the subway and train, as well as buses, including the airport bus. Within walking distance is also many local tourist attractions - just follow a map and enjoy a day with serendipitous adventures. It is a well-located hotel as a base for other day trips as well.

Loved my stay here, and was the best reasonably priced mid-range boutique hotel especially suited to my needs as a solo traveller, but equally good for families and couples.
