Thamaravila was recommended to us by Destinations Sri Lanka our excellent in country tour company.
The bedrooms are large and roomy with teak flooring through out and are furnished to a very high standard including a huge bath, an eco-shower outside if you want to commune with nature plus good Wi-Fi and satellite TV in the main bedroom.
The accommodation does have a tented roof so you will wake up to the dawn chorus but is closer to a small house on stilts with a large verandah with chairs and beanie bags! There are plenty of loungers and chill out areas splattered around its extensive grounds too.
Food wise they offer both international and Sri Lankan cuisine and it’s a small-scale operation, so you are consulted on what you want for your next meal – a welcome break from the buffetramas of larger hotels. They have a talented young chef in Asela, and the 8 platter Sri Lankan rice and curry feast he cooked, served on a huge teak platter, was the best Sri Lankan meal we ate in nearly 3 weeks on Sri Lanka. The breakfasts are excellent too.
The deputy manager Sudath was an excellent mine host and absolutely charming! He bent over backwards to make sure our stay was exceptional!! He took us on a couple of impromptu walking tours around Thamaravila’s extensive grounds and beyond pointing out lots of local flora and fauna including wild tamarind and wood apple trees – we had a wood apple smoothie for breakfast the following day too.
There is plenty of birdlife inside the property’s grounds including the magnificent black capped oriole. We also saw barking deers, monitor lizards, geckos, a mongoose and a wild tortoise.
This place is a boutique hotel and its standards are fantastic. We were here for two nights on half board basis but we had our lunch as extras. The food was out of this world and we are vegetarian and they catered to suit our taste. We occupied the JUNGLE ROOM which is close to the main area and the dinning area. The garden is superb and even if you do not go to the park just sitting in the garden is good relaxation. The staff was excellent. Our room kept well and the service was really good. The manager Sudath and his back up Dhanuka were very attentive and went all the way. The cook was super, exemplary and extremely innovative. The breakfast was packed to take for the safari. The steward and room boy was very good and efficient and also the gardener was also helpful and friendly. I must recommend this place to locals and foreigners. It is close to the park very relaxing and fantastic.
It was a more than wonderful stay at Thamaravila. The Service from Danuka was excellent. He is a really nice person who takes care of all you wishes and helps you in all points. The food was super delicious, as well. We had such a great stay.
We've booked a Safari by the Hotel and it was the same quality. Super nice people - thank you Marlen!
And the Room(s) were great, too. We first had the Jungle Room, and upgrader later to the villa. Both rooms were very clean and really nice.
We have absolutely nothing bad to tell about our stay. Thank you guys for making our Honeymoon to a great, great stay.
Upon our arrival, we received a free upgrade to the best villa the hotel had. We highly appreciated this and the villa was very good. It was specious, clean and had many nice details. A special aspect was the shower on the balcony. It was great when showering during the daytime in the sun but taking a shower in the dark (which is necessary if you want to shower before the safari) is slightly creepy due to the amount of (unpoisonous) frogs lingering and jumping around (it was however frog season). The restaurant offered a nice variety of perfectly cooked, locally harvested and delicious food. Another great aspect was the assistant manager, Danuka. He made sure we had the perfect stay and even took us to several walking tours to the village and two lakes. He was very attentive, polite and motivated. The location of the hotel is perfect as it is very close to the entrance of Wilpattu National Park. Yet, there is not much to do beside the national park. Nevertheless, one major area of improvement is the back office staff. We had to send several e-mail enquiring about safari possibilities before we received a satisfactory answer. Before arriving, we again had to send more than one e-mail asking how the safari could be paid. We finally received the answer that we could pay by credit card. Yet, when checking-out, we were first asked to pay cash, which we could not. Lastly, the website of the hotel is highly inaccurate. It claims that the hotel offers board and card games, badminton facilities, a library and bikes for rent. We found that there was nothing of such kind even though we asked. Considering that there are no other facilities such as a pool and a gym, one could say that the price per room is a bit high. Nevertheless, we highly enjoyed our stay at this peaceful hotel.
A large luxury villa in a tent was a unique experience for us. The villa is huge and has lots of amenities. AC kept the main room cool while the adjoining bath room had a fan. We liked the outdoor shower. The small staff prepared great meals and even took us for a walk to the lake. There is easy access to Wilpattu National Park where we saw leopards, sloth bears, deer, plus many birds and reptiles. We felt safe from the recent events in other parts of Sri Lanka.
