Maybe my expectations are too high but I feel I’ve written some very honest and reflective reviews. 4 star hotel? I would unfortunately have to disagree. Minor things but they all mounted up.
Arrival: quick, efficient, friendly staff
Room (standard double): shower was a dribble, door to balcony was extremely old and the handle was rusting away, furniture on balcony ripped, needed a lick of paint, quite small, small wardrobe space. Air con loud and pointless and 100 years old. Quickly asked for an upgrade. Suite was available.
Room (suite): worth it. Large room, comfortable bed, better furniture on the balcony but could still do with upgrading. It says you get a personal chef, we didn’t get this once. Towels are minimal and not good quality.
Dinner: buffet every night. Food was good, some fresh to order. Different locations on different themed nights (beach, pool, restaurant). An idea would be to have one night from a menu and not buffet.
Pool: reasonable size. Plenty of sun beds. Towels available but again the grey ones really need updating. Pool bar great service.
Massage: good/average. A nice way to relax though.
Activities: table tennis table needs some serious attention. Tennis courts are useable - just.
Gym: small, does it purpose, great air con. Good equipment. Worked out twice and was by myself. Perfect.
Overall it just needs updating and refurbishment and it would easily get 4 stars from me.
The staff saved this place for us. They were fantastic!!!!
Upon arrival a lot of construction was happening, therefore our reservation wasn't possible. Luckily the manager solved it very well and we had a lovely stay. All the staff is very friendly and helpful. The pool with bar is beautiful, the beach is superb. Watch out for the stealing monkey though! The food, buffets, were good! Further: strong wifi, fast service, towels for beach/pool, a small gym, shop, laundry service. A recommendation!
This is our third visit to Pinewood over the last 10 years. The fact that many of the team are still working there, and even remember us after a number of years, is a testament to this hotel's management team and their values. Service and cleanliness are everything, and this team never disappoint. From Elijah who cleaned our room, to Wycliffe, Duncan and Eunice who looked after us at breakfast and at dinner. From the security team who opened the gym for me every morning, to Charo, Issac and Nimrod who entertained us at the bar each night, the team are to be congratulated.
We were impressed with how lovely the beach boys were during this visit. Just lovely boys, helpful and not at all pushy. Well done Kenyan tourism for working together with the sales boys to get a happy medium for everyone. It was a pleasure to walk down the beach rather than a chore. For UK guests Pinewood is not a hotel which immediately springs up when you're searching for a south coast holiday, but it's so worth the search, it's a little paradise right at the end of the beach, off the beaten track, but only 20 mins down the beach to the rest of civilisation if you really need it! We booked through Virgin who were fabulous from beginning to end. Thank you team Pinewood for a short but wonderful break, Alison and Paul
Pinewood Beach Resort is in a spectacular location, right at the end of the Diani Beach area. The beach is sparkling white and empty, mainly because people prefer to stay on the site so as not to be bothered by the beach vendors. There is a shady, sandy area where most guests liked to sit but we preferred the pool which we had almost to ourselves. The staff were very helpful, especially the pool boy who saved sun beds for us in our favourite position and the pool barman.
BUT..... the food was very ordinary. Dinner in a hotel should feel like an occasion but it didn't at Pinewood. Starters other than soup were almost non-existent and there was very limited choice for the other courses. We had the Mongolian stirfry three times during our nine day stay. Drinks service at meals was horrendously slow: we often finished our main course before our wine arrived. That said, the wine was surprisingly good for all - inclusive. Lunch at the beach café was better, but again you could wait for 45 minutes for your food to arrive.
The hotel has a laborious system where you have to sign for every drink, meal or service. This is crazy as they always took your room number anyway. It just slowed things down.
We were fortunate in having a suite, It was roomy and comfortable but the bathroom badly needed updating. The layout of the hotel is practical so that you are never far from the beach, pool or restaurant and the gardens are beautiful.
We like to be active on holiday and were disappointed to find that the tennis court and equipment and the table tennis were all in a very sorry state. The owners could easily and cheaply improve these facilities and perhaps provide more games like boules or shuffleboard. The gym however was excellent.
All in all, the hotel has much to recommend it but it needs a 21st century rethink.
Pinewood Beach resort and Spa is a delightful surprise. After leaving the made up road we travelled along a dirt track for quite a way before arriving at Pinewood. As soon as we turned into the property we transported into a world of relaxation. We walked and ran on the beach, started the day in the gym then had no guilt about doing absolutely nothing (apart from eating and drinking and chilling). The staff are delightful. We upgraded to a suite which was lovely but the rooms are large and airy in their own right. Would definitely go again.
