It was wet and cold and I was on my motorcycle touring Italy and made a last minute booking for the night to get in out of the rain. What I got was so far and above most stays in a B&B I Need to write about it.
Firstly Marco met me at the door, led me to a spacious well appointed room with a beautiful and spacious bathroom attached. The Queen bed is comfortable with nice linens and extra blankets and pillows easily available. Since I regularly camp, I had already purchased fixings for my lunch and asked Marco if it were OK for me to prepare my lunch in other than the bedroom, as I imagine no one wants food in the bedroom. He then lead me through a sitting room for guests, past a very nice reading room and into a dining room. All for guests, all appointed in charming period pieces with books, games, even musical instruments. So much to see and do in the neighborhood as well, and all documented with easy to follow directions on laminated cards left in my room. this really is not just a great place to sleep, but a wonderful place to come for a week or longer for a fine vacation.
And don’t let me forget the breakfast. In Italy I have come to expect an espresso and a croissant. Not here! Good coffee or espresso. Or Tea. Juice, home made and store bought Yoghurt, cold cereal with fresh cut fruit, jam, honey, bread and butter and pastries. I was almost overwhelmed with a very hearty and well presented breakfast
We had walked from Berceto over the Cisa Pass and encountered very difficult stretches downhill. Other than a small Bar at the Pass, we found no other services. Seeing Marco waiting for us at Eremo Gioioso was like finding a cool drink after crossing the desert. It was a surprise to find an elegant accommodation in a location that is so remote on the Via Francigena. We received such a warm welcome from Marco and Marzia, plus a lovely snack and cold beer in their beautiful garden. Our en-suite room was so warm and beautiful. When they served us our Pilgrim dinner, we responded “lucky Pilgrims!“ as it was fresh, local and delicious! Breakfast was equally delicious as it included homemade yoghurt & ricotta cheese.
Anyone visiting this region in the summer can enjoy the beautiful swimming hole nearby. If you’re walking the Via Francigena, definitely consider breaking up Stage 22, from Cisa Pass to Pontrimole, and treat yourself to a stay at Eremo Gioioso - you deserve it!!! If we could give it a rating of 10, we would!!
I loved it from the moment I stepped in. The place is loverly, an old stone house in the country and the silence and lots of stars above. Everything is loved, every detail is just right and you feel the love behind. Marco and Marzia are lovely, so kind and helpful and nice! The room was lovely. The silent made for a perfect sleep, breakfast was good,. Did I say how loverly they are? I loved every momenti I was there. Thank you!
Like many other reviewers, our party of six walkers stayed at Eremo Gioioso for a night as we walked the Via Francigena. We were welcomed by our hosts Marco and Marcia with drinks and snacks in a gorgeous little garden, just down the hill from the B&B.
The rooms were delightful, with loads of character. One couple in our group even had a little sitting room downstairs and a loft bedroom. Beds were comfortable and everything was clean. For dinner we signed up for the ‘pilgrims dinner’. It was a very simple meal of Testaroli - the local dish which is a cross between pancake and lasagne sheets, covered in olive oil and Parmesan, followed by a spinach pie and a cheese and meats plate. Given there were no other options in the town we were grateful for this meal, but the real bonus of eating in, was that Marco produced some excellent red wines which we enjoyed. Breakfast was very basic but there was plenty to eat. We were a bit frustrated that the wifi wasn’t working, but Marco offered us use of his personal computer which was kind. We also experienced a earth tremor after breakfast which made us all sit up and take notice- not sure that they can offer that to all guests! Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and would happily have stayed for a couple of nights and use this B&B as a base for shorter walks around the valley had we not been on a schedule.
My son and I were walking the Via Francigena section from Fidenza to Aulla. Previde (where the Eremo Gioioso is located) is right on the trail. We did a booking for the trip and were booked into the Eremo Gioioso as part of our travel. The location is perfect - the trail runs right by this B&B. Mauro and Marzia are great hosts, everything was well taken care of. The B&B is rustic, taking 5 years to remodel, keeping much of the older structure in place from a room perspective but upgrading the "modern conveniences". It is extremely quaint, nicely decorated and very comfortable to relax in. Our room was comfortable, clean with plenty of space. Even with a rustic look there was a modern feel and a comfortable feel. There is wifi (it works!!) for those that need it. This was a very nice stop on the walk, right on the path and very comfortable. If you are taking the Via Francigena, I would definitely recommend that you take the route that passes through Previde and make sure that you book into the Eremo Gioioso. Do this in advance as I believe this special place will not remain a secret for long - it will be booked in advance due to the location and the hospitality that is the Eremo Gioioso.
