Highly recommended. We stayed before and after walking the Heaphy. Clean quiet comfortable room with cafe /restaurant offering tasty food snacks and coffee. Good shower and laundry. The staff create a happy caring atmosphere and really went the extra mile to look after us. Track transport can be arranged from the resort. A visit to Oparara arches especially Honeycomb cave was an added highlight. There is a small shop close by where you can get a good range of supplies. The museum is worth a visit.
Great value for money. Comfortable room with amazing hot water pressure! Had a jug and a microwave but no hotplate.
Restaurant had a great menu with good prices and portion size.
NO LIE - I had the best Egg Benedict (with Bacon) I have EVER had in NZ. So delicious, with amazing bread. It was fantastic.
We booked a few nights to get away for a post Christmas break. A studio en-suite was well equipped and we've paid more for a lot less and smaller. I agree with being able to hear the neighbours (some of their conversations we're tedious and even their partners sounded bored) but I use ear plugs and as long as I can't hear them when I'm trying to sleep, I don't mind.
The food we had was great, no matter if it was bar snacks or a t-bone steak and everything in between, especially considering you are a long way from anywhere. Can't comment on the breakfast as we brought our own.
We ingratiated ourselves with the locals and they were welcoming of us, especially as we stayed more than one night and kept returning for at least a nightcap.
Tania and Ed were great hosts and I feel like we left as friends, so much so we've booked again for new years 2021 :)
Overall we thought this place was quite average and expensive for what it was. The walls are thin so you hear everything from the rooms either side as well as people walking along outside your room. The bathroom is in need of ventilation - the only way to do this was to leave a window open which attracts bugs at night and isn't safe to do when you go out during the day.
We ate dinner at the restaurant once and thought it was overpriced, however made allowances as it is in the middle of nowhere. The second night we got fish and chips takeaway and headed to the beach to watch the sunset.
On the plus side, the hosts were friendly, the location is pretty central in Karamea, there is an onsite bar with a limited selection of beer, a pool table and two cute cats.
This is the 2nd time we have stayed here, the last being 6 years ago on completing the Heaphy Track. The accommodation is tired and basic, but comfortable, but over priced in my view (we stayed in a lovely king room at the Rydges in central Christchurch for the same price). Dinner was good with hearty, generous portions, but overpriced (city prices, but this is very remote West Coast NZ).
