My wife and I got married in Arenal May 2017. The wedding was at the Springs Resort but we stayed at the Majestic/Pie properties. We had a group of 30+ friends/family staying with us at the properties. We rented the full lodge plus all three of the Pie in the Sky homes. The entire experience and the properties were incredible.
First I want to say that the people who were managing the properties, Nancy and Z, were incredible. Throughout the booking/planning process I was always speaking with Nancy and then when everybody was arriving Z was always around to help any time we needed him. He really went above and beyond any expectations. For example, the mother of the bride and a group of 7 other friends/family were the first to arrive. They were only going to be arriving at the properties about 9-10 pm due to flight times and drive times. It was raining heavily when they were arriving and because he was concerned about them getting their safely and getting situated Z waited for them to arrive, made sure they were able to access the home they were staying in without issue, and hung around to make sure everything was suitable. He continued to meet every group as they arrived over the next few days and was always just a text message or phone call away if we needed anything. He helped to arrange tours and transportation as well. He and Nancy are husband and wife and they live a short drive from the homes so they are always available to help if you need anything.
As for the properties, the pictures really don't do them justice. The homes look nice in the photos but a little plain in some ways but that's deceiving. The quality of the building materials and workmanship is extremely high and you can't really tell that from the photos. There are two pools, one by the lodge at the bottom of the hill and another up top that is shared by the three Pie in the Sky homes. Both pools are great with really cool stone work around them. The bottom pool has a hot tub that is surrounded in stone as well as a stone edge around the pool where you can sit. The lodge also has a huge porch adjacent to the pool that has a long bar counter top, a full size refrigerator, and a great sound system with outstanding speakers. The bedrooms are all nice and have their own bathrooms in the lodge. We spent the majority of our time hanging out on the porch and in the pool/hot tub.
The three Pie in the Sky properties are up the hill. Z and Nancy both recommended we have a 4 wheel drive vehicle if we are staying up top and I would concur. The driveway is lined with stones and you can make it up without four wheel drive but if it is or has been raining heavily it could be tough. You also definitely want to have a car staying in the Pie homes for a few reasons. One, getting up and down the hill (especially up) walking is not easy. Two, the majority of things you are likely doing in the area are going to involve you driving somewhere.
As far as the homes themselves, the Pie properties are newer than the lodge and are even nicer. The view is absolutely incredible. You have a great view of the volcano and lake from the lodge, but being higher up definitely makes a difference, the view is expansive and incredible. There's also a covered pavilion that sits about 6-8 directly next to the pool plus a really large outdoor/covered pavilion just above the pool. There's a two-story bird's nest as well that is the highest point on the property.
As far as the homes, the 5 bedroom home has a long porch along the back side with an incredible view and all of the bedrooms have a door leading to the porch. Each of the rooms are a large size with their own bathrooms. The 2 bedroom home also has its own porch and can sleep up to 6 with the queen sized futon in the living room. The kitchens are nice in both homes and there is space to sit for dining. The one room cottage has a nice front porch with a great view and its own bathroom, plus huge windows looking out from your bed at the volcano and lake. But there isn't a full kitchen, more like a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, and it is relatively small inside kind of like a small studio apartment.
The lodge has a laundry room with a washer and dryer and there is also a laundry room at the Pie properties that is under one of the pool gazebos.
In terms of the area there is a bar and restaurant right next door to the lodge named Howlers. It's a fun little spot and convenient if you just want to grab a bite to eat or drink without driving anywhere. The town of El Castillo is a short drive away and the zip lining/Sky Trek is also just a few minutes away. Arenal Observatory Lodge, which has great hiking trails you can access even if you aren't staying there is about 10 minutes away and Tabacon Hot Springs is about 20-25 minutes away. Although if you want to go to Hot Springs I would recommend the Springs Resort over Tabacon. Although Tabacon is incredible the service there is really bad for such a highly rated resort and the pricing is much higher. We were there during a low season for travel and people were literally waiting for 30-45 minutes at times just to get a drink from the pool bar and several people were given bills that were significantly incorrect.
I highly recommend the Majestic properties if you are looking for a vacation rental. I was in charge of finding a property where our group could all stay and I spent a ton of time searching on multiple websites and of all the options in the Arenal area the Majestic/Pie properties were by far the best choice. Then we arrived there and were blown away at how much more it was than what we expected. Every person in our group felt the same way.
Thanks again to Z and Nancy for all their help throughout.
