I have been coming here for nearly 20 years and loved the place. However its gone downhill as far as customer care.
I booked for September 28/29th in January this year. After numerous email the booking was confirmed. It was our honeymoon hotel and have returned on numerous occasions on the same time of year.
By sheer fluke I looked at their new website and discovered that they were closed until October.
I contacted them and they explained that the room wasnt confirmed, and yet they sent me a confirmation email.
I have repeatedly asked for the Owners email but I was only given the Managing Director's email.
Its a disgusting way to treat your customers!
They also confirmed the "new" rates (that have risen by 50%)
To top it all, they now ignore my emails.
So all in all, dont go there, find another place.
I just tried to book to stay this September and to my amazement the prices have gone up 50%. A room I always book, last year it cost £205, Ive just been quoted £300. I emailed and asked why the hike but as yet have had no reply. Its under new ownership, but I fear that at this rate this Hotel will be empty. Bad enough last year when only 4 rooms were occupied when we visited. Nearby Hotels are cheaper and offer more. So last year was my last year, I am really sad but it obvious that the new management have to recoup some of the money they need on pointless expansion.
+ Nice big room
+ Very helpful and friendly staff.
- Very bad to no WiFi in the room
- No coffee machine in the room
- Adjusting the shower meant reaching through very hot water to add cold water. I almost burnt myself.
- Tourist tax was not included in the price, gave a strange "last impression" when I was just about to leave. Why not include that in the price?
- Too expensive for what you get.
Would give it 3,5 rating as it is above average. But the price is just too high for what you get. So will leave it at a 3.
We only stayed one night but it was wonderful. The hotel is truly special. Our room was on the third floor so lots of stairs. It was big and very clean with a lovely bed and gorgeous linens. We had breakfast which was a feast. Also dinner which was the Chefs surprise menu. Very nice too. The grounds are lovely.Service was top notch. Thank you for a lovely stay.
The staff is very friendly and attentive to your needs. The restaurant onsite is outstanding and the bedrooms are a good size. These are probably the nicest digs in all Witten and who wouldn't want to stay in a castle!?
We stayed in the December room (#12). It was spacious with a large seating area.
They have an excellent breakfast with fresh breads, meats, fruit, yogurt, etc.
For lunch I recommend the "surprise" chef special. It's a 3 course meal with whatever the chef decides to make that day. Ours included scallops and pork cheek. Both very tender, very most.
The grounds are lovely to walk or sit outside and read a book with a blanket they provide (as long as it's not raining!).
