About Monica U
Lives in Sydney, Australia
Since Jan 2014
35-49 year old female
Globetrotter, foodie and lover of good festivals, digital marketing and writing. I have visited more than 80 cities around the world but have called Sydney home for the last 10 years. Previously , I lived in Cancun, Mexico and Playa del Carmen for 5 years and learnt to scuba dive. Having a partner that skies, Queenstown is one of our favourite destinations both in winter and in summer, and just a little "jump" from Sydney. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to cook a meal and share it among friends.

Prepare to be amazed by quality shows that last all night and include characters like The Mask, Batman, and Beyonce; plus Latin Music extravaganzas, and funny sketches. However, it can get crowded with not a lot of space to dance — if you are claustrophobic I'd avoid this venue, or if you can afford it, get a space in the VIP section for an entirely different experience.
The Blue Parrot is one of the oldest beach clubs in Playa del Carmen and a romantic place to have a cocktail, swim in the pool by the beach and enjoy amazing music by some of the best local and international DJs. The fire show at the beach is quite amazing!
There is something sophisticated and cool about sipping a Martini, and the Dirty Martini Lounge is the perfect bar to have one. The owners Greco and Karen have built a place for people to fall in love all over again! Everything is right; the music, the conversation, and most of all, the fantastic Martini list. Try the Cucumber Martini, one of Karen's personal creations!
From the same group of Mandala (the Indian Palace Club) in Cancun, comes this exclusive nightclub in Playa del Carmen. If you are a young couple, or on your honeymoon and want to enjoy the latest music, dance all night and be looked after by excellent service, then Palazzo is your place. Depending on the night, there are different shows, like a catwalk, acrobats, and dance performers (both in English and Spanish).
Cantina La 38, ia a bit 'off the beaten path' but an excellent choice if you are looking for a place with great atmosphere, excellent cocktails, and live music. The prices are a lot cheaper here than in the main avenue (Quinta Avenida), and the service is excellent. As a typical Mexican cantina, you can order small dishes at the bar to complement your drinks and enjoy the laid-back, open-air atmosphere.
I love beach bars and, in my opinion, Wah Wah Beach Bar is the best in Playa del Carmen. For starters, it has a huge TV screen in the middle where you can watch your favorite sports team, the food is simple but delicious, and the Margaritas are out of this world. At night, the place transforms itself into a big, open beach party, with live bands performing anything from good old Rock 'n' Roll to Cuban tunes, Blues, Mexican Salsa, R&B, and much more. As they say: come for the drinks, stay for the party!
What better way to spend an evening out than dancing the night away to the tunes of romantic Cuban salsa? Welcome to 'La Bodegita del Medio!' Located right in 'Quinta Avenida,' this restaurant bar has the best Cuban food in Playa del Carmen — think 'ropa vieja' (a dish made with derivatives of cocido), fried plantains, rice and black beans. From 5pm onwards you can listen to a live Cuban band on stage, and soon enough you will be dancing the night away!
Adding a touch of sophistication to Playa del Carmen, this rooftop bar and hotel has one of the most stand-out themes in town as it's all red! Get ready to explore some fashion, music, design, and other alternative-themed rooms, and let your imagination go wild! Plus, the rooftop bar has a large pool area and fantastic views of Playa del Carmen.
